    MDTA took in $56 million in tolls from this bridge alone last year. Cheap bridge that was built 47 years ago, and it didn't even have shoulders for disabled vehicles. Where does that toll money go? Where was the pier protection?

    • @FriendofMineralTown
      @FriendofMineralTown หลายเดือนก่อน

      It goes to pay the politicians and city/state/county leaders who have swollen paychecks. Also maybe .025% of it goes to filling those potholes that the people were filling while it collapsed.
      An unfortunate truth is they probably weren’t even doing the highest quality pothole filling. Knowing America, they probably filled it with goop that looks like chocolate frosting, giving it an uneven result and an improper fix.

      Good point, but this ship is 150,000+ Tons and 1000ft long. Something that size is going to take out almost anything. Tug boats watching the bridge could help.

      Toll money goes back to the investors that buy bonds that build the bridges. Toll bridges are income producing so they can’t be built with tax payers money. They are built with money made from investment bonds. Like municipal bonds. And when the bond matures, the money has to be paid back to the investors. Any one can buy municipal bonds.

      The ship is owned by Maersk (Danish) and flies under a Singapore flag. Not sure Singapore the nation is on the hook, or if both are the maritime approvers in Singapore and Maersk are on the hook. Maritime/admiralty law seems to be a very complex law and it will take years to figure out if those two entities pay and how much. Plus, the wrongful death suits of the construction workers. I'm glad to have my tax money go to fix the problem now, although that will take years for a new bridge. Just unblocking the shipping channels will help all of us keep the cargo moving.
      Live in Hampton Roads...shipping channel bridges are mostly bridge tunnels...tunnels are more expensive than bridges, but with the volume of traffic in Baltimore/Dundalk I wonder if a bridge/tunnel isn't a better idea.

    0. Search and rescue, 1. demolition, 2. Creation of a new harbor master, 3. engineer plans for new bridge, 4. Create a (fed) bond issue for construction. 5. Escort all cargo ships in the future. The Bridget was closed to traffic before the hit, but some maintenance people did not leave.

    Hope they build a strong and safe bridge this time and not try to rush with less quality. Ships were not this big back in the 70s, wonder how many other old bridges should bebuild before accidence occurs? Our infrastructure and safety of American is more important than funding foreign wars.
