I have a 2023 and feel like Tom made this just for me. Thanks!
I love to hear that!
Bruh, get a better camera , set to 4k60, I mean I think even an iPhone will record batter than this in low light, just go with a Sony 7c II , a video this good deserves better video
Tom, just bought a '24 Lyriq today.. You, sir, are a gem. If you haven't already, you need to license this presentation and sell it to Cadillac. Every Lyriq owner should see this! Thank You.
I bought one today too. The lease deal was insane. Couldn’t pass it up
Best video on ev charging yet. Thank you sir.
As a new owner of a Lyriq this was excellent information!
Thank you
Can you pelase let us know a little bit about your experience?
I might be trading in my Volt 2019...
Thanks Tom. I shared this with one of my friends who has a Lyriq on order. He said it was great, now all he needs is to actually get his Lyriq!!
LOL! Your voice on the video triggered my Google Home device to start spitting out the list of nearby DC Fast Chargers . . . while I am sitting at my computer in my office.
Like that burger king commercial
Tom, I’m sending this video to anyone slightly interested in EV’s. It’s great education!
Great video, Tom. A point that I like to drive home with people is or relates to cost. You pay kilo watt hours on your meter and a watt is a watt, no matter what is pushing it as voltage. Your watts can be delivered to your battery from 110 V Are the same cost as the watt that is delivered by 240 V. It’s just the rate of which those watts are delivered in simplified terms. If your Lyriq would need 20 kWh to receive a full charge on a level two charger, it will be the same amount of cost delivering those same 20 kWh on the level one charger. The only difference is the time factor.
Very thorough, and good info even if you don't own a Lyriq. Keep up the good content.
I would’ve gladly taken cash instead of the free charging from EA for my 2023, IONIQ 5. But I’m more happy with my purchase clocking in a 0% to 70% and 17 minutes and topping out at 82% from 0% after only 22 minutes. I can fully charge my vehicle in 47 minutes from 0% to 100% but I’ll never do that publicly. It’s not very kind to those who are waiting for your last 18% and if you can’t find a charger closer than the range you can get with 82% of your battery then you need to get another app to start searching in a different way or start carrying destination adapters. 🤷🏻 Nicely done Tom💯 36:17
Great that you think of others! And you can always return for a faster top up at a lower state of charge. I do the same on road trips a bit more often charging than fewer and longer charging stops.
That doesn't seem possible. 0 to 17% in 17m is faster than the 800v architecture cars. I imagine the Lyriq in reality and perfect conditions would do that in maybe 30-40m
If you want to see that charge curve for yourself it only takes five minutes. It was my first attempt. So much for the stars being aligned. 😉 th-cam.com/video/9PP8oq-YH-4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=n41ZZoq8aXysf6zK
Excellet video, Tom. Even though I'm not a Lyric owner, I found the content of this video to be very helpful.
Another very informative video. I enjoy all you videos. I am on the waiting list for a Lyriq, so this video was most interesting. I hope that software update does improve the charging timeline.
I just checked. Luxury 2 comes with a standard 11.5KW charger if you have the 240v/48amp circuit. The 19.2KW is a $1480 option.
Not only is it not standard on the 2024 Lyriqs, you'll also require 100 A service and the Ultium EVSE or equivalent. So add in $1299 for the EVSE and what ever it will cost to install 100A service for it. I'm not aware of any L2 commercial charging stations that offer more than 7kW.
Great video and information for new Lyriq owners. In case anyone needs to know the $1,500 credit for installation of a home charger does not include the actual charging equipment which the owner has to purchase separately. Some my Lyriq has the 19.2KW charging module I need an 80 amp level 2 charger. The Optium model GM sells is $1,299 which you have to pay yourself. The good news is that the $1,500 credit pays for the installation.
Thanks Tom for an excellent and informative video specifically for Cadillac Lyriq. I really enjoy and learn somethings new about the DC public charging. Hope to see you doing another video soon after Cadillac releases OTA update to increase the speed of charging.
I never comment... but u deserve it. Great job! All around. U gave me tons of useful information. I appreciate you!
Great video: A family member made the switch to a Lyric and shared this video with them.
I'm about to get my 2024 Lyriq next week...this is my first EV and I'm not super knowledgeable about all the charging stuff. This is EXACTLY the video I needed to understand what I'm getting myself into 😅 thanks so much for making what seems so complex so much easier for people like me to understand.
Fantastic video, as usual. Mr. Moloughney produces the most scientific content of all the EV TH-camrs and it always worth your time. This video is a good example (especially his comments about having an EV-expert electrician install your home EVSE). Along those same lines, I would take argument with one of his comments about setting level 1 charging to 12 amps instead of the default 8 amps. In my opinion, the only time a 12 amp setting should be used is if the circuit it is on has a 20 amp breaker and there is nothing else on the same line (a rare circumstance, especially in a garage or outdoor plug). It is important to not intentionally load circuits to their max, that is why an EV-expert electrician would install a 48 amp level 2 charger only if the supply circuit breaker and wiring were 60 amp rated AND there was nothing else on the circuit. As Mr. Moloughney said later in the video, EVSEs are unlike anything else in your home in that they pull the full power for the duration of the charge. So, imagine the car was set to pull 12 amps on a 15 amp circuit...Not only would that exceed the safety margin that is supposed to be used for household circuits, but tripping the breaker would be common if anything else were plugged in to that circuit. It is likely that many garages that were not designed for EVs have only one breaker supplying the whole area. Therefore, a car pulling 12 amps on a 15 amp circuit will blow the breaker when someone activates the power garage door opener or the spare refrigerator turns the compressor on or maybe even if the lights are turned on. It is just bad practice to set your level 2 charger up for anything other than 8 amps, especially when traveling and the user has no idea what the electric circuits can handle in the place they are staying. Quite frankly I am surprised that Cadillac even has this option available. Just my 2-cents. All the best.
Excellent information especially given that this is a moving technological target with plug designs, available apps, and vehicle features. No glib talking nor attempts at being cute, just information that's important to prospective Lyriq owners. Thanks!
thank you for explaining things so clearly, i am about to receive my 24' lyriq, going with the 80A home charger using the credit from Cadillac.
Excellent as always, Tom!
This video was extremely helpful; thank you Tom!
Very comprehensive and well-done.
Tom, they did give me the the 1500, but it cost me $3,000 for the installation and additional $450 to $500 for the Emporia Energy and they installed that as well. Im glade that i got it installed. I had to run it from the back to the front of the house, but it work out fine. Thanks for the update on charging, I find out that when i used Electric it was costly anf it would cost up to $30 dollars with supper charger after 20m.
Very helpful. Thank you for the video.
YOU DID AN AMAZING JOB!! Thank you very much!!
Wow, great video and instructions. So helpful!!
Glad it was helpful!
What a great video! I’m a potential buyer of the new Acura ZDX which shares the same platform with Lyriq. I’m here to get educated and I got what I wanted. Thank you!
Tom like you I have been driving electric since 2011 nissan leaf, and 2013 s85. If you charge at home speed of charge is 100% a non issue. Road trips sure, but with modern evs its not a big deal, period. I now have graduated to 22 plaid, 23 m3p, and 22 ev6 gt our family drives more than avg and charging is not an issue, its cleaner than gas station, safer and way more convenient than gas, like dinosaurs ice passenger vehicles will be the past.
Tom, great informative video. I remember when you made a test drive video of this car. I guess you were impressed enough to buy one? I currently have a Tesla MYLR, purchased in 2/26/21. I am considering switching to the Lyric or maybe even the upcoming Optic sometime in 2024. I had an XT5 before switching to the Tesla. I've had good luck with it. But I am ready for a bit more luxury. Thanks for making great videos.
Great video - thank you!
We just got our 2024 lyriq max range when we plugged it in 100% 601km plus new door handles very nice ride one of the first ones in Canada
Thanks for great video on charging the Lyriq. One weakness of Mercedes vs Lyriq is only 9.6kW AC level 2 charging. Also, the lousy MB charger that is supplied with this expensive EV only does level 1. It doesn’t have replaceable plugs like GM and Tesla.
You could also just buy a Tesla mobile connector and use it for the Lyric. Then you can buy all the adapters you’d like. You’ll of course have to have a J1772 adapter but it will work great.
@@justinstewart3248 Yes, but I have to buy something extra. When spending $133K for a EQS 580 shouldn’t MB give the buyer an upgradeable mobile charger for the big 108 kW battery? Their model has a fixed 120 V plug.
Another great video!
I was planning to buy a LYRIQ and I was looking for exactly this information.
Thanks for the education on the plugs 🔌🔌🔌
Keep up the good work!
Love your videos, I geek out! I have a 2024 AWD Lyriq Sport. You mentioned an upgrade that was coming for '23. Does the 24 have that upgraded capability. Will you do a video on 24? Hope so - Thanks!
HI TOM, THIS WAS VERY INFORMATIVE--good job! May I suggest a further instructional video going over all of the intricacies that the Lyriq has for everything on the dash board--from opening the glove box to pulling up Google and non-google MAPS
Thank you for the video. Will you talk about the hard wired charger for the Lyriq and how many miles/hr it should charge at?
20:40 well the good news is for all the power limited superchargers, it wont change how fast the lyric goes!
I feel like having more medium speed plugs is more useful than having a few really fast ones
Great review Tom
I bought a Tesla Tap Mini after watching the video how to charge the ID4. I charge for service to my country. I did 6 years in the Army before being medically discharged while overseas.
Hey Tom,
Great video! I have a home charger and wonder how do I or can I set up a time for charging to begin? Example starting at 9pm
Good to know great video getting a lyriq for 2 years then finally getting a tesla model 3 so wanna do a tesla charger at home good to know im gonna be able to charge the lyriq with that adapter.
Thank you Sir, for taking the time to present on this. Great video with very useful information. Well done!!!
Thanks Tom😊. Anticipating my luxury trim Lyriq sometime this year.... But wouldn't be upset if it landed next year with the new NACS pre-installed options🎉
Thank you, great video. Can you recommend a home charger level 2 for my 2024 sport Lyriq?
Great video! I'm getting a Lyriq Luxury and plan to get one of the Ultium Chargers. I also have a Chevy Volt, charging it with a Bosch Power Max charger. I'd like to use one charger for both. Any suggestions?
Thank you!
Qmerit's contractor said my panel was overloaded and it was going to cost additional $2k - $7k to add load shed or upgrade meter. I had a 2nd and 3rd opinion from electrician's I chose, and they both said it's not overloaded
PROPS to GM for offering the $1500 credit to install home charging!! Home Level 2 charging makes own/using an EV a LOT EASIER!!

Hi I recently purchased 2024 lyric I am trying to install a 240 v outlet what breaker should I be using i plan to use the lv2 charger that came with the vehicle
I have a dedicated 40 amp 240V line in my garage already specifically for EV charging... Would I be better off opting for the network charging when I purchase my Lyric?
My Lyriq is charging - I'm in my bed ASLEEP.
Okaaaaaaay!
Which adapter do you recommend I can add to my Tesla home charger to use on my 2024 Lyriq ?
Good vid
Tom,
I am considering a Lyric and wondering what the cost breakdown would be for home charging.
How far back is that charge port? can you use Tesla Magic Dock without parking across 3 spots? Will the 2025 version have the charge port in a different position for the shorter Tesla Supercharger cables?
I wish I found you 6 months ago when we purchased our 2024 model. We opted for the $1500 credit and it has been great. I do notice the charge is frequently interrupted some nights. What do you think is the cause of that? We tried many troubleshooting options with Qmerit and the Cadillac dealership but it'll randomly happen.
What's with the automatic charge door but then the funky little plug thingy?
I'm starting to see Lyriq in my area north of Dallas TX. I have to say they look better in real life than in photos and video.
Thanks. Is the Lyric EVSE on the recall list like the Bolt EVSEs?
The recall for that I think had a manufacture cut-off for September 2022, would be very few impacted then.
Aloha. Great video.
Could you explain what app non Tesla EV will need to use and pay on Supercharger network?
Will it be a (clunky?) ICE OEM app, different for each OEM?
Or will ICE Legacy EV be able to seamlessly use the Tesla app?
For GM it will be both. I do think you will be able to enable Plug and Charge though.
Ford now is able to use certain Tesla superchargers today and the number of Superchargers available to them will keep expanding. They received an over the air update to allow the communication with the Superchargers and I believe other manufacturers will do similar.
Tom, this is a very informative channel.
My question is for particular case of very low mileage use EV.
My wife uses for short commute her Bolt EUV, around 60-80 miles a week. I limited charge to 65%.
For battery longevity is it better to charge on 220 V daily or better at the weekend, once a week?
Thank you.
Doesn’t matter
@@FuncleChuck I assume there is no difference between charging at 220 V and 110 V - level 1 vs level 2 for battery longevity?
I have a new LYRIQ and I use the charger that came with it. I use a dedicated 250 amp outlet. I can never get a charge greater than 70-74%. Does that mean something is wrong with my charger or does it mean I’m not doing something correctly? Thank you!
Tom
I imagine turning in my leased Lyriq after 3 years and realize I used up 30,000 of my 36,000 milage allowance driving around trying to find a charging station that works.
Always blown away how unsmooth that port opening is.
Tom, I understand that the Lyric and other GM EV’s will be capable of bidirectional charging. Do you have any information on that product? Availability or estimated cost of the VTH equipment? Thanks, very helpful beginner video.
Interesting. I hadn't heard this yet.
Just googled it and it says model year 2026 vehicles with the Ultium-based battery.
I guess if it becomes popular a lot of EVs will have it later
@@ralanham76 All Ultium Vehicles will have it by 2026 but starting 2024 MY it will start to be added.
The good thing is NACS magic dock is growing . There’s one between Ft. Worth and Dallas.
One note- the 19.2kw module is optional on Luxury and Sport trims, not standard.
Something I'd like some clarification on... Is it safe to assuming when using DC Fast Charging is the internal (the smaller 11 or larger 19 kw) charger bypassed? Also if the vehicle is locked, would the charging plug AND an adapter both be locked?
Hi Tom. I would like to know if is possible to use an extension cord like Lectron J1772 and how this can affect the battery or charging times. Thanks.
You can use an extender if you need a longer cord. It won’t have any meaningful impact on anything.
I've been using a regular extension cord to charge since day 1. It doesn't add very much time unless the cord is super duper long like 100 ft or something because then the voltage goes down slightly.
We currently charge on the driveway and leave the EVSE just inside the garage door and the cord goes right under the rubber part without a problem for our situation, this is better because the EVSE is inside and the part that could be damaged is cheaper 😂
The main thing you have to look at is you can only use a maximum of 80% of the max load for the cord.
Does the Gm charger have power sharing like Tesla chargers do? I have to Tesla chargers at my house now and when picked up my Lyriq's they had level 2 chargers with the cars. I thinking about changing my Tesla out for the gm's ones. How ever I need power sharing. Help pleaser.
I thought charge later was when the vehicle would start charging... its opposite? The time selection is when it will be done?
Does anyone know if GM/Cadillac makes a 6-50 adapter that fits inside the EVSE to use rather than the 14-50 that it comes with for Level 2 charging?
All you need is a licensed electrician to do it right. I have a 40 AMP circuit breaker addition, the proper gauge wire and professional install. It cost me $1200.
My Lectron Charger was given to me to promote for FREE. Saved me $1000 in equipment.
Is nice job Tom. I'm a little surprised they don't offer electrify America.
GM doesn't seem to have a great relationship with EA.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney great idea
I have a Luxury 3 AWD Lyriq. You simply plug it in. I have a LECTRON V-box step 2 home charger rigged for 40AMP instead of 48 AMP and it takes about 7 hours to bring the car to 100% from near empty.
I have a Tesla wall charger. Does the Lyriq have an adapter that will allow me to use the new Tesla charger for my Lyriq?
If this Cadillac EV is as good as the different ICE Cadillacs I drove over 3 years, you will be able to charge it in the service bay of your dealer. Why there? Well, my different models broke down constantly and were in the service bay all the time!
Why don't scheduled charge settings have an optional Do Not start before setting. MY time of use rate starts at Midnight. I do understand that a Full charge by the target time may not be possible.
Another point. Some utilities have a demand (how many KW peak) rate (mostly commercial users) charged. So just using the Fastest setting without a good reason, should be avoided. (Same as using the fastest DC charger when your vehicle can't accept that rate (due to SOC or temps)
Tom, the EVGo 50 kW stations around me limit charging sessions to one hour.
Thanks. I just ordered the top model Sport 3. I’m not sure what they were doing in 2023 but they now charge $1480.00 for the 19.2 charger upgrade. So my question is, is it worth the extra cost for the 19.2 charger? I drive an average of less than 100 miles a day. Thanks.
No it isn't worth the extra cost.
How much is the install for the charging station at home?
The Lyriq has two port options., 11.5 kWh & 19.2 kWh. Which is used in your tests?
upvoted!!!
Tom...With the 19.2KW on-board charger I am correct in assuming that the Ford Charger Pro will work with the Lyriq
Yes, it will.
I am thinking of getting a Lyriq, thanks for the info. I have a Tesla model 3 Mid Range that I will sell. I had a Cadillac previously and now that Cadillac is offering an EV I am looking at going back to Cadillac. Again thanks for the info.
The Luxury Trim standard charging module is the 11.5KW module. The 19.2 KW charging module is not available on the Luxury 1 model (1SC). It is available as an option on the Luxury 2 (1SD) and Luxury 3 (1SE) models. My 2023 order was changed to a 2024 Luxury 2 order which was placed in June 2023. A week later GM said there were constraints on Super Cruise so the order was changed to a Luxury 1 model. The car was built in July 2024 and was held in the factory parking lot until late November when it was delivered to the dealer on 11/29/2024. I took delivery on 11/30/2024. Most cars built during that time were low-optioned cars and all came with the 11.5KW charging module. From what I can see on local dealer lots at this time they are still not receiving any of the higher trim levels.
Dates don't look correct... think you meant 2023 on most of these.
Thanks, great info. I just decided to stick with gas. No way I am going to be dealing with all that.
I’m considering buying a Lyriq my question is I’m a snowbird and usually have a trickle charge on my combustible vehicle for approximately 4 months. What would I have to do on a EV.
I just watched you show how to charge a lyric at home on a charge port could you please do the 2024 Chevy blazer? I’m getting ready to purchase it. I wanna know how to charge it at home as well. Thank you my name is Calvin.
I will as soon as I can get one
Thank you I appreciate you doing. Excellent job good teacher I’m an old TV guy, so I’m watching how you do things good work.
Tom how many people, if they charge at home charge from 0%? Not even out of spec does and kyle is a beast.
Pretty much nobody. But there isn't a set limit that everybody will start charging at. So it makes sense for me to show the whole 0-100% charging, and then let the individual extrapolate the time based on when they plug in. I can't do that for DC fast charging, because the charging curve isn't linear, as it is with AC charging.
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney agreed, no you are awesome 100%. That comment is more for the haters that will think I have to charge for 10 hours or whatever, as you well know plug in when your done driving, if at home of course, and wake up full. The misconception, see ray and Zach caredge electric they say things like 2 hours to fast charge 120 hours at home, of course people that say those things don't own, drive or live with evs. Great work as always Tom appreciate all you do to get the true information out cheers 🍻
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughneyTom is it better to buy your level 2 charger from the GM dealer? Maybe more compatible with my Sport 2 ?
My 2024 lyriq battery died, in
My garage, we managed to manually open charge port but it won’t take charge…. Is that normal ?
Is there a chart that relates AMPS to KW?
It’s voltage dependent, so the higher the voltage at the same amps means more kW.
What is an estimate of battery loss while the Lyriq sits in an airport parking lot? Say it goes in to parking at 65%. Can I expect 65% a week later? Just curious how much it will drain.
And by the way, great job on this video.
Thank you as always. Might you consider recoding/broadcast in 4K? Would love extra resolution when watching in my vehicle.
