  • Welcome back to the Edger Bike project! In this video, I show you how I made a custom steering neck for my custom dirt bike / motorcycle project. Yes, you heard that right - I'm making the steering neck itself - not the stem. Since my entire frame was made out of pipe from scratch, but I decided to use a manufactured triple tree and forks, I needed a neck for the frame itself so that the front end will actually fit in my custom frame. I bought a piece of tubing that was close to the size I needed, but I had to use a boring bar to increase the inner diameter on both sides so that the steering stem bearings would fit inside. Enjoy!

Sweet! I may have missed it in the video, but how did you determine the correct head tube length?

I actually don't remember to be honest. I think I just ordered the length of tubing that was enough to fit from the outside edges bearing to bearing as they sit on the triple tree. I believe the threads stop just at the top of the bearing, you can kind of see it in part 11 when it goes on.

what was the wall thickness of the wall at the bearings?

Do you mean the brackets for the bearings, or the pipes? The brackets are made of 1/4" steel, which is kind of overkill. I believe the pipe walls are around 1/8"
