Machining a Bicycle Head Tube on a Manual Lathe | MTB Frame Build

  • Today we continue the hardtail MTB frame build! As I explained previously, I decided to buy a 44 mm head tube from Paragon Machine Works for this frame build. But since it's a pretty common head tube among custom framebuilders, I wanted to spend a little time customizing it. That's what I'm doing in this video.
First, I give a brief overview of my manual lathe, and I show one way to hold a head tube in a lathe that provides access to its full length. Then I rough out the radii at each end of the head tube for a more distinct shape, and I turn the length of it down just a bit.
I finish by polishing off the head tube in a pretty dangerous way with a hand file and Scotch Brite, which I don't actually recommend. Be very cautious with your safety when working with a lathe, especially if you're trying anything like this.
Hopefully, watching this gives you some ideas for how you might machine your own custom head tubes on a manual lathe!
Here's the playlist of the whole Hardtail Mountain Bike Frame Build-I'll keep adding to it as we go: • Building a Hardtail MT...

Nice video. A tip that an old-timer told me was to keep your tailstock feed wheel handle knob past the 12 O'clock position so it can't loosen under vibration and gravity.

Good vid, FYI you should reverse you turn direction when using the file.

Awesome to see some machining happening live! 4140 is always tough to get a good finish on, only luck I've had was with flood coolant and 0.1" depth of cut. Excited to see more custom parts for the mountain build!

@Veteran Bicycle Can't say its my favourite material but 100% agree on the hardness leaving a great finish! Specially with some CBN tooling.

I noticed dog can hear the sound of the cuts. Dog knows speeds and feeds. :)

If you drill it out a little bit you can put a berry in there and I would have had a bearing in the end and the bearings are cheap enough where you can have a bearing and you put your pieces in the bearing and a roll

Great..also you should of make a video on how to make that tube from scratch.. because many countries that tube is not available to purchase as you got it ...if you should did with measurements that will helpful to people how to make a headTube process

You know you can use a promise sand paper it polishes the copper tubing and cleans up everything

Hey just found your channel and has been super helpful! I only have an oxy acetylene torch so I plan on silver brazing but what size and type of steel would make a good sturdy bike?

I think the radiuses that you machined off weakened the tube.

Yeah for sure. It was kinda overkill to begin with though.

Are you power feeding all the way to the end and then backing the X off? Or power feeding most of the way and then manually feeding the last little bit?

Manually feeding into the corner. More engagement on the cutter so I want to go slow with feel and be ready if it starts to slip.
