Building a motorcycle frame | Part. 1

  • In this video I show you the construction of a motorcycle frame, the original was so badly damaged that this had to be completely rebuilt.
    Also in this video I use mainly standard tools that should be found in most metal workshops.
    The frame is built from chromo steel ( 25CrMo4 )
    This is not a complete motorcycle project, but I show you the interesting fabrication steps.

    Having that spindle n chuck on the indexing table makes it popular as a go to!
    Nice workmanship with the tube notching, makes a big difference in the build quality. This man is a patient and thorough skilled tradesman.

    Ok you've taken what used to be simple cut and weld to fit and turned it into precision craftsmanship. Im not sure its a good thing, but your definitely an artist.

    Just look at the welds on the jig even... I was laughing to myself because I was thinking this fits that stereotype of German engineering precision then looked up the channel information. Well surprise surprise. haha. You do beautiful work. It's always a joy being able to watch a true craftsman.

      @@KRTframework I've worked with welders that won't deburr the inside of the tubing. Won't clean off the table. Drives me crazy.

    Was ich absolut klasse finde, ist die Tatsache, dass Deine Rahmenlehre handwerklich um Längen besser ist, als das, was manch Andere als fertige Arbeit abgeben...👍
    Der Sinn ist klar, schlecht positioniert bedeutet beschissen geschweisst.
    Aber selbst da sitzt jede Naht wie gemalt. Respekt!

      Gerade bei sowas finde ich, kann man üben um sich stetig zu verbessern, Klar könnte man die Rahmenlehre auch mit MAG schweißen, aber das macht mir zum einen in der Werkstatt zuviel Dreck, und ich bekomme so wieder etwas mehr Übung beim WIG Schweißen dickerer Sachen.

    An excellent specialist for a top quality work. Not sure however than a similar frame in carbon fiber would cost more with a good gain in weight and rigidity.

      unfortunately i didn't have a cutter with the right diameter, but if need be i can use a flycutter, not so nice, but it works

    I'm just about to start a bicycle aluminum frame. I read is okay to tack the frame on a jig but is not a good idea to weld it on the jig to allow expansion and contraction. Any advice please.

    Awesome Video! This goes to show that you do not need a bunch of voiceover or music throughout a video to make it thoroughly entertaining. One question though, What is the point in drilling the holes where the tubes meet the main backbone and head tube?

      I drill the holes so that I can get shielding gas into the frame during welding. you can also see this in the Part. 2, which is now online.

    Im assuming that’s ChroMoly tubing by the way it appears ( I know I’m watching from my phone) to be tough to cut with machine tooling, strong rigid and durable.

    How do you work out those bevels for those tricky angle cuts with the hole cutters and endmills, is it by eye/feel or is there some secret metalworkers math course i need to discover and learn?

      Unfortunately, I have not made a video of how I built the welding jig, but I'm building a Ducati, which gets its own frame, swingarm, etc.. Since I filmed how I built the welding jig.

      It will take some time as I just finished the welding jig and am now starting the project. I think the first videos will come in 4-6 weeks.

      yes, the top tube was not easy to get.
      the frame is an Egli replica, ( have one here that is unfortunately destroyed )
