At 18, She Told Her Parents She Was Pregnant. Here’s How They Reacted | Underreported

  • She got good grades, was a member of a sorority, and ran on the track team. When she saw that pregnancy test, “My life is over,” she thought. Still, Kelly made a decision that today, few teens do-she would carry her baby to term, then place him-or her-for adoption.
But first, she’d have to tell her parents. In this video, Kelly shares how that conversation went, what it was like carrying a baby to term as a teenager, and the process of placing that baby for adoption months later.
In 2014, 18,329 women in the U.S. chose to place their children for adoption. That same year, more than 900,000 women chose abortion. According to the National Council for Adoption, a nonpartisan group that advocates adoption, for every 1,000 abortions and births to unmarried women, there were only 6.9 adoptions.
Kelly’s story illuminates the beauty and hardships that so many young women undergo when faced with an unplanned pregnancy, and adds perspective to the pro-life battle that's being waged throughout the country.

Hey Kelly, your story is actually a lot like mine. I’m a little older than you, but was the same age when I went through this. Although I’m not a religious person, I made my decision based on a lot of the same reasons you did. Individual situations will always be different, but like you, I have no doubt I made the right choice at the time. I still keep in contact with my birth son and his family (we see each other about once a year) and am fortunate to have a great relationship with them! People like you and me are very fortunate to have had things turn out so well, and although everyone’s situation may be different, I think people need to hear about these very positive stories, too. There is a lot of naivety out there regarding unexpected pregnancy and adoption (as you can tell from a lot of the comments here 😉). Thanks for sharing your story!

But my baby is alive & has his own life now. He's alive because I would not totally erase my "mistake". I've went through hell. But I still wouldnt "erase" my mistake.

I am an adoptee from a closed adoption in reunion now for over 2 decades. I have relationships with one of my two birth-parents and both of my adoptive parents. I don't call my birth-parent "mom" or "dad" as respect for the ones who raised me. Kelly here did an "open adoption" which for the child and birthparents is far more healthy. I am glad Kelly did not decide to have an abortion. I am glad I was not aborted , however "Pro Life" is against "open records" here in California. I ran into this in 2001 when I sat in for a judiciary hearing for AB 1349 in California. Anyway, enough of politics.
If you Kelly or anyone wants emotional support, please check out a website and come to the meetings for CUB or just educate yourself. CUB stands for concerned united birth-parents and one of the many things it is is a support group for birth-parents, adoptive parents and adoptees. Here is the link and god bless for having the child, following thru with your commitments, and doing this video.

We did an open adoption and stay in touch about once a year, so I’ve had the opportunity to watch him become an amazing young man. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but I know I made a selfless decision to give him the best life possible, and it’s also been an amazing experience for us. I’m sometimes nervous to tell people I placed a baby for adoption when I was a teenager, because of the stigma that often surrounds adoption and birth parents, but people like you and I know we made the decision with our child’s well-being in mind. This is one of the first stories that actually makes me rethink whether access to abortions should be so readily available (I'm a pro-choice conservative). There are situations when an abortion may be the preferred choice (pregnancy due to rape), but the statistic in the article that only 18,329 women gave up their child for adoption when 900k killed them in 2014 is alarming! As I've grown older my perspective has changed. I remember the horror stories of an unplanned pregnancy. However, I now know too many couples who've struggled to have a child. It's really a shame that more pregnant women don't opt for adoption over an abortion. 900,000 is a lot of children killed when there are capable parents who have homes who want them!

"I was in my usual area looking for "custom", it was cold, raining, and a wretched night, and as there was no "business", I decided to take a walk to the church in the distance for no other reason than to get some warmth , I went in through the doors into a foyer area separated from the main church, and was stood there just getting warm, not really thinking about anything, when I heard a voice calling me by my name , I looked round and no-one was there, the voice continued in the most kind compassionate way, again spoke my name, saying "you don't know how much I love you, and how long I have waited for this moment, to welcome you back, she turned to look through the large window into the church, and at the back of the altar was a large figure of Jesus with his arms outstretched, actually moving towards her, lovingly welcoming her enveloping her in his peace and incredible love, she then told of how this real experience transformed her life
, in ways that she could have never imagined.
Believe me Braaidude - no-one is beyond the love of God, Jesus loves all sinners profoundly, and is eagerly waiting for the moment when they too will wander into his space where he can minister to them, welcome them home and transform their lives
we must also keep praying for the Ladies that for whatever reason, did not choose life, and had abortions, Our Lord loves them just as deeply as he loves this young lady, and intensely yearns for them to be reconciled with him, and accept his Grace, healing and peace he wants to give them, and one day at his appointed time, he will be with them in their glorious reunion with the children they had lost,

There are two issues here. One is that pro-life is not an exclusively religious position, though I imagine it is easier to argue for abortion in an atheist view. The other is whether the unborn have rights. The rights of the unborn should not depend on whether mothers happen to think their unborn children have rights. Either the unborn have rights or don't. The pro-choice movement claims to be about women's rights, but that is only part of the picture. There is a separate individual in the woman's body.

@@glurp1 Yes, it is an exclusively religious position. "Separate individual" and "unborn have rights" only make sense under certain religious practices. I respect people's religious affiliation but globally most of the population does not believe in Christianity. This idea that pro-life should be promoted and dictating women's life is a remnant of the colonial mindset. "I assume everyone is the same and shall hold the same belief." If people do believe "pro-life", they probably should stop consuming any meat because they are literally slaughtering others' babies and eating them. The double standard here is clear. My belief system and my people are superior and we should make it into legislation. No one is taking away your pro-life position but please step back and respect others at the same time. Also, why people choose not to wear a mask when most countries on earth require a mask mandate to protect the elderly population? Go to public gatherings and spread diseases are not "pro-life". It sounds pretty like "against-life" to me.
How do you feel if Buddhists want everyone in the state to stop eating meat? How do you feel if Islamists asked all women in the state to cover their faces all the time? Will you support their position since a large group of people has been practicing these rules for thousands of years?

This story goes beyond you personal opinion of the situation. Adoption in my opinion would be a hard choice, but way better than abortion To play your card, why don't you judge less and love more?

It is in this case a selfish decision. I raised my adopted son. I saw what it meant for him being left by his mother.

some aren't just as ready as your insensitive ass to be a parent. too bad some folks go the whole pregnancy thinking everything will be fine and then finding out being a parent isn't for them AFTER THE BABY HAS BEEN BORN. and what does her family have to do with this? not everyone wants to raise a family members child and some may not even be physically, mentally, or financially ready to be a parent to someone else kid at that! and besides, whats wrong with giving a couple a family they desired? you're a real piece of BITTER work, go knit a sweater or something.

@Elly thank goodness you aren’t our God. You’re one bitter, judgmental and snide soul. Her child is safe, happy, and healthy. She blessed a couple and created a family for another. That is a gift. She doesn’t have to but she chooses to still be in that child’s life. The pain and hurt in her eyes, in her soul is transparent and is evidence it was a traumatizing and painful decision for her. Your heavily-despising remark counteracts your point and only displays your heart that is absent of compassion and empathy. In short, you are a cruel person.

Adoption is a brave, loving choice. We are grandparents through adoption, and we thank God every day that a scared young lady made that courageous decision.

Wait, she Said she knows the father of the baby for 8 years and they were talking about getting married. Then why did she immediately decide to give the baby away?

@Meri lupa I don’t think you should comment unless you’ve watched the video with genuine attention. He cheated, that’s why. She went into details about that for a good 3-5 minutes. @Tommy Luio I don’t think anyone cares or expect any empathy from a misogynist. That child is happy and healthy and so are the families. Your opinion won’t change what has already been done and been done gracefully and lovingly. Hopefully you never have daughters because they probably won’t be valued very much by you. Or maybe they may just open your eyes and make you realize how ignorant you used to be towards women.

Elly De Heus, because she didn't choose abortion 5:00 and I'm sure they weren't overjoyed she got pregnant, but she explains why she chose adoption@ 11:26 . There are still consequences: she was unprepared, no husband/boyfriend support, she didn't get to raise her first child and be called "mom". I believe she made a mature decision out of a non ideal situation

What are the consequences you would want her to take? Adoption is a brave, loving choice.
