Hi, so I (32F) have been married for the past three years. My husband (35M) and I have been together for five years, but as of now, he has been living away from home for work. We’re doing the long-distance thing, and he comes back every alternate weekend to spend some time at home. We have our own house that we bought a couple of months ago, just before he was about to leave. it’s a really beautiful place and it’s close to my parent's house, so it’s convenient for me to visit them and for them to visit me, and the architecture is beautiful. It’s quite spacious as well, which suits me because even though it’s just me living in this house, I love the feeling. It’s just a beautiful house, in a really good neighborhood and I like living here. When I threw my housewarming party, I also got a lot of compliments for it, before we had even unpacked or decorated the house properly.
The family in law was annoyed that OP would not be a door mat. It is good to set boundaries. And no contact is the best way. I had enough of my sister in law. No contact was the best thing that ever happened. Now we all party at my house without her. Is great
My mom had to do the same with her sister. Sometimes, you have to cut out the toxic people in your life to have a little peace.

NTA. Who the heck has a party at someone's house and then expects thwm to leave. Im sure this incident is just the last straw. Sil sounds like an entitled brat.
She even waited until almost the literal last minute to tell her to leave. She kept it a convenient secret during all of the planning because she knew it was wrong and wanted to make sure to get as much use out of her as possible first.
It just never ceases to amaze me the ways people come up with to show gratitude.

For the aunt to be it is outragious to be disinvited. A host needs no invitation - could even be used as a free maid to hand out drinks and food... What about the future father? Was he not invited to his own babyshower (or are men usually excluded by this kind of present-gathering?). The "mother to be" certainly was also missing from the "guest-list".

Cary's parents' behavior to OP tells exactly what her problem is. She is a spoiled princess with no accountability. It was only a matter of time before that marriage fell apart from that alone.

Uh, what "misunderstanding?" There was never any confusion here. SIL knew from the very beginning she wasn't going to invite OP, and she knew that OP would be expecting to be invited to a celebration being held at HER OWN HOME. She knew that if she told OP she didn't want her there, OP never would've let her have the shower at her house. Why else would she wait until the last second to tell her she wasn't welcome?
I would have cancelled the event and called the police. We’re not family remember, so get out! Baby shower’s cancelled.

@@Calories_To_Calibers I was thinking that too. Carrie probably decided to quit being close to the people who were not of the status she perceived herself to be. But in the end wealthy, entitled people may let wannabes into their fold for a time so they have someone to look down upon and gossip about when she isn't around. SIL no doubt doesn't have real friends left who would throw a shower for her because she discarded the people who weren't "good" enough for her.
I think OP should be officially considered to be the host.
So, OP is a banker and your SIL didn't think OP would be a good contact to help her with her new business. 🤷

SIL clearly hates OP and does not want her as a partner in the event that the business is successful, not that it even could be successful. People who have to "Live it up," and show off their success to feel validated are almost never capable of keeping the finances of a business in the black. They will always diminish the principle with extravagancies that degrade the business or turn it into a money pit, if the business was even a sound idea in the first place. This is probably why rich friend cancelled on baby shower. She's using her rich husband's money to finance HER extravagant lifestyle and hairbrained business plans. She doesn't have time for mooches.
Makes no sense why SIL didn't mention it earlier. Waiting until 15 minutes before the event almost makes it seem like she wanted to fail. Because that is just stupid.
I posted above that had she done it sooner she knows the OP would not have let the house be used and helped so much to plan it. She KNEW that the OP assumed that she had a de-facto invite and ambushed her at the last minute hoping she would just capitulate.
Her @$$H0L3 sister in law was definitely NOT playing the long game because even if the OP did what she wanted and the SIL got to enjoy her event as she wanted that would have been the LAST time the OP ever did anything for her so in the long run it would have been a pretty expensive decision.

BIL is a good man for trying to give the marriage a shot, but I don't hold much hope. SIL is deeply, DEEPLY flawed. Her core values are trash and don't align with her husband. That man left her because he got sick of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. All marriage counseling is gonna do is make that realization that much clearer.
I hope Carrie grows up and accepts responsibility.

SIL didn't want professional help because she had no intention of actually spending her own money. But I do believe given the Professional capacity statement she should have sent her husband and inlaws a bill for the use of her house as a party venue and to recoup any expenses she had out of pocket. And tacked on a per hour fee for all the services like helping set up decorations.
What Jim experienced was the "bait & switch". Carrie simply tried to behave until the ink was dry on the wedding certificate. Then she showed her true self.
Who got to do the clean-up after the party? I’m betting on OP.
Honestly jim shouldn't take Carrie back unless she truly changed,
because it was already bad enough she treated op like that, and try to live beyond their means which would affect the child once here,
But try to trick people into invest into a unstable business of her,
which could land both of them in legal trouble if something goes wrong, and it would have since she refused to stop spending beyond her means,
So how on earth would she be able to run a business when she spends like that?
Become being a good business owner you have to be kind and especially spend & budget wisely.

In the US, it is considered extremely low class to host your own baby or wedding shower. Your “nice” house would NOT impress anyone, if you were hosting a shower for yourself. It would create quite the opposite effect. Maybe it is different in other parts of the world?
I believe it's low class to celebrate 'the birth' an unborn infant in the US.
It's also considered very low class to exclude the host.

NTA at all OP. Your SIL has a staggering sense of entitlement and no manners at all to behave like that towards you. For her husband to take such extreme measures as to leave her indicates that this is just the latest example of her atrocious behaviour, previous examples of which you have not been privy to. The sequence of events which made your SIL's husband reach the end of his tether had nothing to do with you though and you probably knew nothing about them. Your SIL did though and she did not intent to change her behaviour at all, so he had had enough. Your own husband, your SIL's brother, was not available to talk to. There was no reason why you should not have spoken to your SIL's husband, as you are all family and you will have known him from family gatherings and such. Your SIL's parents have raised her to have no manners at all yet they dare to blame you for that. These people are obnoxious and neither they nor their ill mannered daughter are assets to your family. Not your fault, though.
I would’ve told them this is my house. I let her use my house and she’s making me leave forcing me to leave. No that’s not cool. I did a lot of work and planning for that party to make it nice and you don’t even have the courtesy of letting me stay in my own home. Being pregnant does not give you an excuse to be entitled.

Jim is wise beyond his years! His decision to work on his marriage but not move in with his wife, go to counciling, co-parent after the baby is born and if things work out....who knows! This gives his wife a chance to appreciate the real lifestyle she has verses her trying to live a "rich" lifestyle she can't afford!
Carrie's the way she is because her parents never taught her right from wrong. The parents allowed their daughter to behave the way she is. The in-laws are soooo pitiful.

I would have told SIL I was not going anywhere, as this was my house. She could have her little shower and leave. I would not have had to call my husband and especially my BIL. OP told on her SIL and now acta all innocent like she deliberately did not get her in trouble. Its SIL fault totally but OP was a little tattletale. If SIL did not like her being there tell her tough. That you can just cancel it all or she can put up with your presence, as you are putting up with hers.

Reminds me of the SIL to be who wanted to hold wedding reception at OPs house lying about it to her to be husband that it was her house, and on the same grounds wanted OP to leave the house. So OP just wouldn't let anyone in on the day and it all fell apart since grooming turned up and wanted to know what was happening.

I'm sorry, but my brother's wife would be considered "close family members". But even forgetting that for a moment, it is HER house! Gee! OP, your heart is very much in the right place, but I sort of think that your SIL and your in-laws have some really screwed up priorities and it seems to me if your SIL hasn't learned by 30 years old that she needs to concentrate on her own family and their wellbeing and not on impressing the Jones she is either immature, stupid or both. I feel for Jim. I think your SIL is a narcissist, and your in-laws are enablers and in the end Jim is going to end up having to leave her, if she doesn't leave him first when she thinks she can find a spouse that can afford her Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous aspirations. And if it comes to that I hope Jim gets his child as primary custody because a gold digger like his wife will probably end up choosing a rich husband over a man who can be a decent stepparent.
I am glad to see your husband decided right up front to back you up and stand up to his sister and his parents. I sort of believe that you need to be cautious from now on around your in-laws because your SIL got her twisted up ideas from somewhere. There is no way your in-laws should have been OK with your SIL trying to kick you out of the baby shower after all you had did for her. And the idea that they went there says to me on some level they don't actually consider you a "close" family member either. I would caution you about trusting these people, especially if you end up with a baby of your own. I think you need to sit down with your husband right now and discuss the SIL and in-law problem and get some really good guidance as to just what part your SIL and her family will have with you and your family in the future, even if she continues with the counseling and her marriage somehow limps along for several more years. And you also need to know that your husband is willing to make sure you are his family, so that when his parents drop the bomb that you, and possibly your child aren't real family, you don't end up finding out that your husband doesn't consider you real family either. By their words and actions your in-laws made it clear to you and Jim that you two are not in the same level as their real kids just because they showed they expected you to just do as your SIL dictates, even in your own home. And they seemed to believe that Jim had no reason good enough to divorce their daughter even though she did something that was outrageously spoiled, entitled and disrespectful to her husband by trying to act like your house was hers. Jim was sick of her shit.
