    One Bad Pig summed up the problem with Christian metal/rock, "Our music was too radical for church, and our message was too radical for bars."

    My wife and I saw Stryper last night and they were extremely tight. They rocked the house down. It's rekindled my interest in the Christian bands I listened to in the 80's. Petra, Stryper, Rez, Whitecross, DeGarmo and Key, the list goes on. Excellent video!!!

    Pastor Brad, I'm a 61yo rocker. Thank you so much for this vid!! The only christian Rock/Metal band that was out there in the early 80's was Resurrection Band. Then came Stryper! Bloodgood, Barren Cross etc. I love ALL the Metal that was and is today!! Praise Jesus for this gift of music to us Metal Heads!!❤

    Absolutely Wonderful video pastor Brad. I have been a Metalhead since I was 13 & heard Quiet Riot & Saxon for the first time. Although I have an enormous Christian rock/metal collection, honestly it is very hard for me to give up on a ton of secular rock/metal music. When I heard Scorpions Rock Believer, I was on as much of a high as when I heard Van Zant’s Jesus Christ just today. Such a world of outstanding music. I’ll be digging into your other videos & I’m sure I will enjoy them. Thanks again Pastor! 😇

    Thanks for your stand in Christ! About the Christian metal music, the guys of who sing this style, God used to strengthen me in my faith. I was saved and delivered on October 31, 1984 at 17, from hardcore animal sacrificing satanism. I got involved in satanism from occult based groups at age 9. Such groups as: kiss, lita ford, iron maiden, entombed fetus, led zeppelin, and many more.

    Hey Pastor Brad, got nothing but love for you and got mad respect for Larry Norman. The one name that flies under the radar that truly launched Christian Rock was a Lady by the name Sister Rosetta Tharp. She had a Gibson SG (ooh, Devil Guitar 😂) and a Guitar Amp. She rocked the church service with her playing. Long Live Heaven's Metal.

      To me, there's just no better sound than a Gibson SG hooked up to the right kind of ampage. I like the tone of a Gibson semi-hollow ES-335, but unfortunately, you can't play those too loud because of the feedback, but I think they sound just as pretty

    I think there's something to be said for staying plugged into a good bible fellowship/church that keeps a musician grounded and from going the way of the world. I've heard of too many Christian artists (and maybe this is what happen with Stryper in the early 90s?) who got so caught up in touring, recording, in their own celebrity, etc. that they forgot about the very One they were making music for. If you're not staying in the Word, the temptations of this life on the road will choke it out. That's what impressed me so much about the Petra guys, when I found out they were regular church attenders. Not that church alone gets you to heaven, but when you're always abounding in the Word and in fellowship with like-minded believers that keeps you on the right track

    Excellent video, Pastor Brad. I grew up with these bands starting when I was a little kid in the late '70s. I learned a LOT of scripture from Petra's music. Bob Hartman packed their songs with it. I saw another commenter say that Stryper used a y in their name so it wouldn't be misread as stripper. But I have always remembered the first time I saw them in concert on their Soldiers Under Command tour, Michael Sweet saying from the stage that Stryper is an acronym, standing for "Salvation Through Redemption, Yielding Peace, Encouragement and Righteousness," which I always thought was way cool. Maybe someone can correct me if Michael Sweet didn't say that & I picked that up somewhere else, but to my memory, he said it himself during that show.

    I have been front the Blue oyster cult and Black Sabbath time and came into the Christ center bands like Bride, Striper and now into Skillet and Red. So in the past 25-30 years it’s been hard to find metal bands in Christian Book stores. And even on the radio stations few play the harder music bands. So CD’s are about all there is. I’ve been to several concerts from anywhere like small churches to music clubs in the poorer neighborhoods to the main stage. I would like to see more Christian metal bands come to Arizona. Thanks for your support for these bands

    Couple of bands/acts you might want to check out: Trouble, the first album they did for Def American I'd recommend. The second is Cliff Richard, more of an "influence", there is footage of him playing at a Billy Graham thing. A number of albums about Jesus, starting with 1967s Good News, which could be seen as the "first" Christian Rock record.

    Personally, I point to Resurrection Band as the first ones to crank their Marshall or SUNN stacks up past 10. Glenn Kaiser even discussed this---there was too much timidity early on from Jesus hippies to play anything that would disturb grandma sitting in the church pew. So much of the early stuff was Crosby, Stills and Nash-type stuff. Folky, singer/songwriter based. But then when kids like Glenn got saved, he was listening to Black Sabbath and he always wondered why there couldn't be a Christian version of louder bands like Cream, Sabbath, and Zeppelin. So he went about creating Resurrection Band for that very purpose

    Great video! Wow! So many things can be said on the various style of Christian Music and it's history. I cracked up laughing when you imitated the growls of metal at about the 28:40 mark - I lost it! My apologies! Seriously though - I want to make a few points. 1. If you look at music 200-500 year ago when some great hymns of our faith were written - these writers were ridiculed for using the same music as that what was sung in bars and taverns. In the 1950s then artist like Elvis started, that version of Rock was derived from Blues, Country, Jazz and Black Gospel. Much of these types of music consisted of songs about life, love, hardships and faith in God - which pretty much is the subject matter of the Bible but with the finished work of Christ. 2. If you take the year that each type of the few or couple main categories started, they only predate when Christian artists started using that style by about 10-15 years: Rock - Elvis 1955, Larry Norman late 1960s. Hard Rock/Metal - Black Sabbath/Led Zeppelin/Deep Purple late 1960s, Petra, Rez, Jerusalem mid to late 1970s. So by a mere 10 years or so which is nothing compared to eternity. Some say that Awaiting Your Reply was the first official Christian Metal album but Petra and Jerusalem had some pretty Hard Rocking songs in the 70s and 80s and while the guitars were held back on some of the early releases, they were heavier live. Petra and Jerusalem can be considered proto type Hard Rock where they walked the line or bounced between Rock and hard Rock just like there were proto type Christian Rock Bands in the early to mid 1960s before Larry Norman and proto type Hard Rock Bands in the same period before Sabbath, Zeppelin and Purple. 3. Much of what so called preachers like Jimmy Swaggart have stated are opinions with no Biblical foundation. However some musicians will claim that they are there to reach those that don't go to church or turn on some preaching on TV. I don't know if I agree with that - I guess it depends on the testimony. To me, as a body of Christ with talents, Bible based preaching, a Rock Concert, VBS, a youth rally are all tools that can be used together or separately to strengthen believers and reach out to the lost. Jimmy Swaggart is overlooking the Bible verse that by their fruits - the results - you will know them. Unfortunately - these folks will even question folks accepting Christ at a rock concert which is also sad. We will never totally get a grasp of the countless lives that we will see in Heaven because of bands like Petra, Stryper, Rez, Jerusalem and many others. Our minds will be blown! I don't mean to get off track and as a side note - there is a couple of on line preachers - Paul Washers and Justin Peters - who like Jimmy Swaggart has that legalistic bent and are Calvinists (I don't think Jimmy is) and this view clouds much of what they are saying. 4. I think there are around 30-45 subgenres of Hard Rock and Metal and Similar to you, I only like a few of them for the most part but I dabble in different styles. My favorite styles are: Hard Rock (Rez, Jerusalem, Petra), Commercial or Glam Metal (Holy Soldier, Angelica, Stryper, Guardian), Progressive and Technical Metal (Dream Theater, some of Theocracy), Shred Metal (Impellitteri), Classic Metal (early Bloodgood, Messiah Prophet), Power Metal (Theocracy, Narnia, Barren Cross, some of Impellitteri) and I like a bit of Speed and Thrash (Deliverance and Vengeance Rising) and and bit of straight forward Rock like Whiteheart. 5. Rock music should neve replace Bible Reading and Prayer, but how many of us would take the scripture reference in the booklet next to a song or placed in general inside and get a greater understanding by reading that verse or the few before and after that verse and highlighting it for future reference? I do that sometimes. What an awesome way to better understand a song or to see what the artist was thinking when the song was written or the idea behind the album. 6. How many of us were blessed by these bands? During the highs and lows of life - It may not always be the Shadow of Death moments necessarily - but these songs makes like a little more enjoyable and sweeter and our problems don't seem to be that bad. Cranking a song that we love is kind of like that Paul and Silas moment - make you feel liberated in a way and that Christ is still on the throne and He will have the last say and one day we will see Him and there will be no more issues and limitations keeping us down. 6. I'm not only grateful for the bands but those who work behind the scenes and in the public eye to support these bands who don't get the credit. Here are some - Michael Sweet's wife and daughter - Lisa and Elena, Doug Van Pelt for launching Heaven's Metal and related media, Pastor Bob (who we all consider our own Heavy Metal Pastor) and many others. Some 90s bands not mentioned are Die Happy and Red Sea. Similar to you, bands of the 80s is what I started with when I got into Christian Hard Rock and Metal in 1985.

    (From the perspective of an actual, thinking Agnostic...)
    Have you listened to any Christian music?? There are exactly 2 Christian songs:
    1. How much you love Jesus
    2. How much Jesus loves you
    The Bible isn't exactly "overflowing" with relatable characters (see also: No good music about Dante's Inferno, or the Greek Odysseys or such things as Manifest Destiny).

    Feel Like a Monster was played on a "secular" Rock station when I first heard it. It wasn't till several years later I discovered they were a Christian Rock band. Although I did listen to to Petra and The Rez Band. I prefer The varied Alternative Christian music like Zack Wild, and Lauren Dagle. Sometimes I still like the regular Heavy Metal. If a co-worker is listening to it. However only the Fix 91.3 is programed on my car radio. Btw I'm 54. 😂😂🤣🤣😂😂

      I personally think that's cool. I think often about the fact that Jesus left heaven and came to this sinful world, put on flesh and walk them on this. That's pretty unconventional in the religious mindset. Any calls us to press through the gates of hell and share the good news! Oh, the challenge is, keeping our heart and our minds devoted to him no matter where we find ourselves in terms of physical contacts. Light is only effective when it is shown in the darkness! Blessings Brothers, thanks for sharing that!

    Hey! Is this a compilation of previous videos series you made? I think I saw these awhile ago. Great videos though. The history of Christian Rock is so interesting. Recently I was at a Petra concert, and Bob Hartmann shared about the early years of Petra. He originally wrote the song "Lukas McGraw" as a sort of icebreaker, since people were skeptical of Christian Rock and he wanted to lighten the mood. He recounted one story about a man who rushed the stage and said "This music is demonic, and if anyone wants to leave, follow me!" and the entire crowd booed him off the stage and told Petra to keep playing.
    Then you have Resurrection Band and Awaiting Your Reply, which many Christian record stores banned from being displayed, and instead people had to ask for the album over the counter, and many Christian radio stations only played their songs late at night as to not cause any controversy.
    In a strange way, these early Christian rockers were like the disciples, blazing a trail where the wasn't one and having to overcome opposition from every side in order to spread the Gospel message.

      @PastorBradRocks  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Bless you! I love your heart and desire to be close to and to honor jesus! May God fill you with a sensitivity to his spirit, wisdom, discernment, and a strong clarity about your listening choices. I personally think John Cooper has demonstrated genuine love for jesus. I don't know what to think about the whole devil horns thing. If you hold your thumb out a little bit it actually means love or I love you. I honestly would not personally feel comfortable doing it, I know it's become a part of the metal culture on both sides of the equation Christian and secular. Pastor Bob Beeman has a good video about this. If you look up his name, Pastor Bob Beeman and devil horns you'll find it. I can honestly say I won't be throwing any devil horns up personally, and I guess if bands we love throw them up, a proper response would be to pray, and walk in obedience to what the Lord leads us to do. May God, as I said earlier, bless and lead you strongly!

    • @PastorBradRocks
      @PastorBradRocks  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Of course it hasn't because we're not Christian music-ians, we are Christians. Only Christ can save, Christian artists never professed that they save anyone, they just point to the one who does and can! And I can sure testify this stryper and whitecross and bloodgood and Saint played massive roles in my early steps of Faith as a Christ follower. So I'm sorry for whatever experiences you have had that led you to that conclusion but I'm One voice who can tell you your dead wrong. Not in the literal sense that I already discussed above but in the sense that this music absolutely points people to the savior and encourages people in their walk with him! Thanks so much for watching sharing your thoughts.
