Hearing the track for South Island with perfect clarity for the first time brought tears to my eyes
I believe the "perfect clarity" may be the fact that it's an early version with different sounding instruments.

It's all making more sense that Look-a-like is really a theme song made specifically for Metal Sonic and I would assume this was probably meant to be used during final scene between Metal and Sonic as Bad Future Remix to coincide with Sonic CD.
I need a mod which allows me to put this in the Metal Sonic battle of Generations or CD istg

This version of Look-a-like should've been Metal's theme, no question. I mean hell, 'Look-a-like'? Are you kidding me? It would've made the credits version have a bit of emotional resonance too. Some great discoveries here.

If we found out that L is indeed real this year, then of course we'd one day get the Sonic OVA soundtrack in full. We've done it, boys.

For roughly 24 years, I wanted an official full version of "South Island".
Man, dreams - do - come true.
HOLY..... Track 9 has to be my favorite thing here.
It truly feels like a theme meant for Metal. The ominous sounding instrumental combined with that synth sound throughout sums up Metal as a dangerous machine meant to be feared. Plus the little elements of Look a Like truly ties it all together. Sucks it wasn't in the final cut. Glad I could hear it now
I have a hunch it's a Alt Take on a battle BGM before they settled with what we ended up hearing.
@@TOHOREMIX it legit feels like it was meant to be his theme in CD. That's what clicks with me, I totally could see this in the games.
Plus it fits the character so well, I'm sad it will probably never be acknowledged in a official capacity. It's good that this ost collection is out there though.
Metal is a favorite of mine, especially for his themes. And I agree with you, I could totally see this in the fight between Sonic and Metal after he was introduced.
Under the loud droning DRDRDRDR it sounds almost identical to the Metal Robotnik fight music. The softer beats in the final version are in there but it's kinda drowned out by the louder synth.
I've noticed the music from that scene seems to be absent from this OST demo reel, and I think that might just be an earlier version of it.
Still yeah, it's one of my favorite tracks in this too.
@@Sleesus I kinda hear it too, now you mention it. Though the inclusion of the look a like segments give me the inkling it's a metal sonic theme, it could be a beta metal robotnik too. As this is a potentially early production version of this canned theme, that probs explains why that synth is a bit too loud that it maybe needs.

This makes me feel so happy. The soundtrack was so great in the OVA but I've long accepted the fact that we would never have the entire soundtrack. Even if it's a production demo recording, hearing the tune of the tracks in full is enough for me to feel so good.

5:50 this one scene was more faithful to the games than any Sonic anime spinoff in the past two decades.
I have waited so long for this. No more “reconstructions” or those versions with the sound effects muffled.
Those reconstructions, while very admirable from the view of sequencing/recomposing it just to have a clean version, always came off to me like those instrumental karaoke tracks of pop songs you find a dime-a-dozen on online music services. Fun for the purpose, but they still sound off or artificial compared to the real thing.
Ironic given the MIDI nature of this soundtrack in particular. Lol
This still isn't ideal though. There's some distracting static at a couple points in the track, which I'm guessing was not intended.

I can't tell you how hard the intro music for this video hit me. I just immediately flashed back to me watching this movie over and over again on the VHS tape I had bought off Ebay.
What an incredible find. I know we'll probably never know the one who shared the files with us (I totally get why) But I hope they know how happy they've made a lot of sonic fans.

I just want to say thank you so much for making this all possible! I never thought I would ever get to hear these songs in great quality! Those unused songs, especially the unused Metal Sonic theme are really amazing too! They are just too good to go unheard for 24 long years! It's really amazing hearing the extended portions of known songs or the different instrumentation of them too. I'm really hoping that with this demo tape release it will bring the finalized soundtrack to us someday soon somehow. We're still missing a couple of good songs unfortunately such as the theme that plays when Sonic and Tails first take off in the Tornado or the final battle theme between Sonic and Metal Sonic. This is truly an amazing gem of a find and I can't thank you guys enough for bringing it to the surface for everyone to enjoy. Hearing these songs in such clarity truly makes you emotional with happiness and nostalgia. I still wish the Sonic OVA became an actual series. It had a lot of potential.
I wonder if the person who shared these songs has any other Sonic OVA related content such as storyboards, concept art, character model / reference sheets, scripts, ect. It would be pretty amazing to get to see any of those as well.
Let's hope this is a sign of good things to come.

@@3mar00ss6 Basically, western music is based of melodies, harmony and rhythm. Harmony is what chords accompany the music. Think of them as a set of notes at any one time that sound nice. These can, or do, accompany the melody. If two songs have the same chords but different melodies, you can swap the melodies around and it'll still sound good. Alternatively, you can play them at the same time and they'll sound good.

THE ULTIMATE MASTERPEICE
Alright, let me take all of you back to a moment in personal and internet hsitory. Back in very late 1999, I bought the Sonic OVA from a Gamestop before Sonic Adventure came out. I loved every moment of it, and this song stuck out to me. I rewatched the OVA on VHS for a few years, eventually bought the DVD and waited was hoping the song that played when Sonic and Metal fought would eventually be released. I remember when a Sonic fan game (some Sonic Bomberman ripoff that I think called Spark Fighters?:) was released and had a midi of it that I ripped. I found another midi of it and went through alot of research to convert a midi to a mp3. Now, about 20 years later(give or take a few) we finally have a complete rip. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
I love how 13:51 kind of adds a dystopian theme to the upbeat tone of look a like, creates a really interesting feeling that I honestly can't describe properly.

This is an incredible find, though the sheer number of unused tracks makes me wonder if the rumors about the OVA originally being a full series are true. Shame the Tornado theme and Sonic vs. Metal theme are absent, but I'll take what I can get.

Pretty sure that it was confirmed to be a series but due to poor (or less than expected) reception of this pilot, it was never picked up.

SmashTheOni it’s not comfiermed but in Japan this was a two episode show until the third episode never came they turned it into a movie before America could and America couldn’t turn it into a show too so they put it into a movie too and I don’t know who owns the ova but they should remake this into a show or live action movie! It would’ve been some good crap to watch everyday!

sorry for commenting late, but maybe that's why the DVD is 4:3 instead of widescreen. I thought it was actually in cinemas at America! But then again...this isn't really good enough for a movie, after all it's a OVA not a MOVIE

It's just my theory, but there's the possibility it may have been stock music? I've watched a few Japanese productions that have hard to find soundtracks because of how much of them were stock music.

Thing is, as awesome as this all is, I still wish we could get all of the "final" versions of the tracks. A lot of these sound like beta tracks rather than the final versions heard in the animation. I do like having the betas and unused tracks, but I still crave to hear the final tracks in all their glory.

After years of many recreations and muffled audio recordings, I cannot believe this has come into light. Sure it's a demo, but it's still clean and crisp to listen to. Not gonna lie, track 6, one of my favorites, threw me off just a bit. I guess I got used to the muffled audio so much that hearing this in all its glory likes this just feels so different.
Track 06 was my personal favorite tbh. I loved it because it had the feeling of sinking into darkness/nature delving into technology. It was amazing to hear as a kid

What an absolute gem and an achievement! I remember talking to my cousin about how it was way too late for Sega to release the official soundtrack and is probably stored somewhere in their archives never to see the light of day, and then this happened! It's so surreal!
I was introduced to the OVA when I was young and a budding Sonic fan. I always loved the OST and the vibes of the movie, so seeing that you managed to get this demo out and the fact that so many people longed for it too???
