You should watch Mortimer and whitehouse gone fishing… it’s bob mortimer and Paul whitehouse basically just being old men having a laugh, fishing and going to pubs it’s amazing
Bob Mortimer on his own is captivating, but paired up with David Mitchell (the guy in the middle on the other team) you get something really special! The collision between the impulsive chaos of Bob's brain and the ruthless logic of David's makes for great comedy
“They’re more like fingerprints on an abandoned handrail” is one of the funniest lines ever said on tv. I love it - and Mitchell’s response - so so much.
Haha Bob is a legend. I like David Mitchell as an opponent to him too. His brutal logic and sarcasm poking holes in Bob's crazy stories adds to the comedy. Congrats on the 60k!
I'd love to see these 2 do some more work together. David's dry sarcastic humour and Bob's outlandish bizarre style would go well. I liked the Travel Man episode with Ayoade and Bob, Ayoade also has a very dry style and it went great with Bob.
Bob is able to craft even a mundane story into twisted nonsense. He's a natural for this game. The fact that a lot of these stories are true just make it impossible to second guess him.
It's the details which make them so good. The guy named Cheeseman (36:07), they called 'Cheesy'. Fair enough, totally normal. But it was not because of his name, it was because his mother gave him cheese slices since that was good for his skin. The same guy had a head so big that they called it 'a Sniper's Dream'. Brilliant!
Bob is a year older than me so born 1959/60 and it was a very different world back then. Children were out all day playing, climbing trees, exploring woods, out on our bikes, in and out of each others houses for drinks or for a pee (Mums were mostly at home in those days). As long as we were home for tea, or before it got dark whichever came first, it was all good. We got dirty, scraped our knees, all sorts of things that children today don't get to experience (sadly). We didn't have much in the way of money but we had freedom to be children and loved every minute of life. 😊

He also once painted his mum's house bright pink with bright green trim as a joke as she hadn't given him specific instructions! It stayed that was for decades until the lovely Mrs Mortimer passed away. I also had Bill Whittlingham as a teacher and he was full of Bob stories too :D

Growing up in the UK in the 1960s, the two main fireworks brands were Standard and Brocks. Standard fireworks was founded in 1891. Now they are just another Chinese firework brand. Back when they were founded, "Standard" was a prestigious name. In the sense of "royal standard" being a martial flag. For example, there was also a British car manufacturer named The Standard Motor Company Limited founded in Coventry, England, in 1903.

And here´s a story I don´t think Bob has ever told on the show: at the 1995 Brit Awards, Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker got irritated by Michael Jackson´s performance of Earth Song, during which he stood in a cruxifiction type pose while swarms of children walked around him morosely. So, in protest, Jarvis jumped onstage, made wafting signs from his buttock area and ran around being chased by security as MJ tried to finish his song. It all went to court. Jarvis got Bob to be his lawyer. Jarvis got away with it.
Didn’t go to court, and it’s mildly embarrassing that there was any sort of immediate police action. Bob stood to represent him in the custody suite, advocating that he hadn’t broken a single law

What I also love about Bob Mortimer on "Would I Lie to You?" is that regardless of what ridiculous nonsense he tells you, the correct answer is always that he's telling the truth. Which makes it even more hilarious that this really is this man's life.
"Standard" as a brand designator in those days was quite common for several classes of consumer goods. It implied that at least some extra standard of quality was being offered. This was in contrast to the adulterated or poor quality products that existed before consumer protection laws codified "minimum" standards, which is what we associate the word with today. In those days "Standard" implied an aspiration to consistency, not mediocrity. In that era, if other fireworks went phut, or blew up in your face, a Standard firework was expected to do what it said on the box .
The fireworks Bob is referring to had the brand name 'Standard' . You could also purchase boxes of 'Standard' indoor fireworks - which generally proved to be pretty disappointing . As I remember (50's, 60's) there was no age restriction to buying them only a warning of suitability. Leading up to Guy Fawkes you could buy them in the corner grocer's shop. People had survived a war and government didn't interfere in the minutae of people's lives generally, for good or bad.
Ah guys! I've just come out of crappy hospital after a crappy operation and this has made me cry with laughter! I so needed that! love and respect from Bristol, UK. 😄
Bob is my favourite person to watch, there's no problem that can't be lightened by watching him bamboozle anyone he's talking to. I think the "apple parting" is one of my all time favourite TV moments, it stuns everyone and it's just so funny when he does the triumphant reveal! What a skill! Honourable mention to Kevin Bridges, Rhod Gilbert, James Acaster, Henning Wehn and Greg Davies, as they all have a couple of absolutely crazy stories themselves on WILTY. And Claudia Winkleman is an extremely good liar, she learned from Bob I reckon! I'd be so honoured to sit down in a pub and have a pint with Bob. You can easily imagine it being the absolute best night ever!
GREG!!! You NEED his story on Graham Norton...from when he was a school teacher. Man alive!! Bob is a legend...I never met a geordie who didn't make me laugh like a gibbon. Something in the North Sea...laughter serum...maybe excreted by barnacles on the oil rigs.
The ‘other guy’ is called David Mitchell. He is a well known comedic actor/writer/panellist in the uk. He wrote and starred in a few sketch shows one of which is called ‘that Mitchell and Webb look’ and also was in a show called ‘peep show’ both of those shows also starred his comedy partner Robert Webb. They are both in a more recent sitcom called ‘Back’ they are both very talented and funny as duo and separately. You should also check out a female comedian that was also in the ‘fireworks’ story clip. Her name is Sarah millican. She is very funny! You would really like her stand up stuff I think
Sarah Millican is a fantastic comedian! Her voice has that kind of fragility that makes you think she's all sweet and innocent and then *BAM* she hits you with a very well crafted joke and you realise you're watching a comedian at the top of her game. One of the best!
The other, 'other guy', the one sat next to Bob is Lee Mack, if anyone was wondering Definitely recommend checking out some of the Mitchel & Webb things, the sketch shows are a good starting point - "are we the baddies", "homeopathic hospital", "numberwang"... Sarah Millican is funny, also worth checking out. I also highly recommend Diane Morgan (I think thats her surname, need to check), the woman with red hair who was on same side as Bob, as she is also extremely funny. She's done some stand-up stuff at Edinburgh fringe etc, alongside Joe Wilkinson, and she also plays the role of Philomena Cunk, originally on Charlie Brooker's programme, and later a few episodes of her own spin off iirc.
Cheers for this guys! I really like that you do shorter reaction stuff normally, but this one had to be done and I love that you kept your word and loved it too
Bob's remarkable. He's a former solicitor who teamed up with Vic Reeves (Jim Moir) to form the comedy duo Reeves and Mortimer. They had a success with Shooting Stars. Then remade the classic 60s detective show Randall and Hopkirk (Bob playing private eye Jeff Randall) These days he's in Gone Fishing with Paul Whitehouse. Which is just Bob and Paul going fishing and having an amusing chat.
Theft and shrubbery sounds like a game we played called "Grand National" we sneaked through people's gardens making animal noises until someone came out and chased us, then the grand national started,... like the horse race... we'd race and jump over garden hedges and fences to the end of the street, with winners and losers, obviously. Got really funny on new streets when they had garden ponds etc :-) ... Great fun, oh to be 13 again. Congrats on the 60k lads, keep it up
You should check out a television series called Whitehouse and Mortimer go fishing .Paul Whitehouse and Bob are recovering from heart operations and each week they go fishing as part of their mental recovery .It is just a brilliant programme with two great comedians
Have any fans of Bob Mortimer tried ‘ Gone Fishing’ with Mortimer and Whitehouse? I’m not a fishing fan but the programme is terrific. Beautiful filming of some of the most gorgeous British countryside, chuckles and the occasional belly laugh and some quite moving conversations between two lifelong friends. I’d highly recommend it 😄
Just found your channel and I’m hooked! I’ve seen most of these clips many times as I’m in the UK, but watching them again ‘with’ you guys is a treat. Thank you!
The jingle for Standard Fireworks was "light up the sky with Standard Fireworks!" to which school kids like me sang "blow off your head with Standard Fireworks!".
You have to admit that as he tells each story, you 75% believe it's true right away no matter if truth or lie. His true stories are as unbelievable as his Lie stories. Legend.
The reason the hand lion story works is because teachers confiscate toys from kids if they play with them during class. So teachers can gather weird objects like battery powered lions over time and then bring them out like that.
I love Bob Mortimer. I grew up in the late 50's and 60's and can relate to his stories. We had so much freedom growing up back then but im sure if i related stories from that time they would never seem so funny. He is a true comedy master.
I love your channel and am so glad you guys have found WILTY - it is a deep rabbit hole and you should also check out the Henning Wehn and Kevin Bridges items as well. Hard to believe Bob Mortimer was a solicitor (attorney) isn't it? On second thoughts, who wouldn't want him on your side?
Bob Mortimer is a national treasure. Worth checking out his old TV shows with Vic Reeves- complete surreal madness. He also does an extremely funny (and strange) podcast called Athletico Mince which is nominally about football but isn't really. He also does a great TV show with Paul Whitehouse where they go fishing and pontificate about life. He's funny in everything he does.
he is brilliant his mind is so mad and irrelevant its crazy, and hes actually a profesionally trained lawyer that left his firm in his late 20s early 30s him and vic reeves are legends of the crazy thought they crack me up
Bob Mortimer _does_ have an autobiography, he really has led quite an interesting life. I still find the strangest thing about his is that he was professionally a practising lawyer - you'd never guess it. Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer were a huge part of my formative teenage years, so he's one of those people I always have time for and he hasn't changed a bit.
I actually just split an apple with my own bare hands while watching Bob do it on here and let me tell you it does take a lot of forearm and finger strength... must be a Middlesbrough thing from years past though as I distinctly remember doing this when I was maybe 9 or 10 so someone must have shown me at some point back then. They breed us different up here! lol
In answer to your comment - "He must have been a handful at school." My Uncle was in his form class for around 5 years and sat near to him most of that time. He was so quiet that he didn't realise this was the same Bob Mortimer he actually went to school with, until years after he became famous.
Steve is a nature expert i remember him doing alot of kids nature shows like most deadly animals, thats why he caught bob out on the tawny owl perching on a branch not a cushion.
Bob's appearance on 'Question Team' has become legendary. Also, him and Paul Whitehouse have a TV show where they travel the UK fly and river fishing. Its not supposed to be comedy but it is seriously relaxing and lovingly warming tv.
did you know that Bob Mortimer is/was a solicitor ??? If I thought I could have got him to represent me in court, I would have held up a bank !! He is a " one off " !
If you like to hear Bob's stories, I'd recommend you listen to or read his autobiography. Very poignant in places and a real insight into life for a lad growing up in the 60s and 70s in England. I could relate to it a lot. You'll hear a lot more about these stories, quite sad some of them (along with his health scare a few years ago) and how he struggled to fit in as a kid but also many funny stories as you'd expect.
Bob is famous for ridiculousness and zany comedy. Ex alcoholic, member of comedy duo Reeves and Mortimer. Their show shooting stars was probably the most popular young comedy show of the 90's.
Bob mortimer is a national treasure. He's one of the the best story tellers in the world, funny as hell!!. I love that you guys love him from America to. You mans are great aswell 👍
Mortimer was raised with three brothers in the Linthorpe area of Middlesbrough. His father, a biscuit salesman, died in a car crash when Mortimer was seven. At around the same time, Mortimer accidentally burnt down his family's home with a stray firework.
It's lovely to see your enjoyment of Bob's stories and of the interaction from the other comedians! They are all so talented, aren't they? I've watched the video so many times and scream with laughter every time! Loads of good advice in the comments below.
Congratulations lads👏 Love the reactions to our beloved comedians and listening to yous try to make sense of some of the craziness. Much more interesting than rap fans listening to proper music for the first time. 👍👍
heh and the funny thing is that Bob is considered the tame one of Reeves and Mortimer. But you can see why Jim took to Bob right away and wanted to team up with him. Bob is just a naturally funny guy without even trying. This clip also shows just how funny David Mitchel is and how lightning quick and witty Lee Mack is. Oh and a little aside, The red headed lady on Bob's team is Katherine Parkinson from Doc Martin and most famously From The I T Crowd. HIGHLY recommend The IT Crowd if you havent seen it. Multi award winning comedy series starring Richard Ayoade and Chris O'Dowd
Vic and Bob both share the same comedic sensibilities (let's call it surrealist, but that doesn't quite explain it, because most of it is quite grounded), however, I think because Bob is much more unthreatening looks-wise (he is cute, but Vic/Jim is very good looking), he can pull off all this stuff much better. Stewart Lee had the same problem. One of the funniest comedians in Britain since he was about 18, but he was just too good looking when he was younger so he just came off as an arrogant prat. He had to get fat, grey haired and old before his comedy worked.
60k. Impressive! If you haven't seen it yet, take a look at Kevin Bridges trying to convince people that he once accidentally bought a horse on Would I Lie To You.
I am so glad you are introducing Americans to the wonderful Bob Mortimer, especially when David Mitchell is there , too. Would I Lie to You is one of my favorite British shows.
Now you see why Bob was so good on this show. Between the utter BS he makes up on the spot, to the incredible stories from his life, the man is real good at spinning a tale. With the stories that are true, it makes it easier for him to get away with the lies. David goes off about that very fact.
And that’s why it David loses it and the end of the story about Chris Rea and the egg. He simply can’t process what Bob says as he looks for the logic in what is always highly illogical, and quite often Bob hooks him with a snippet of information which can be actually seen as logical. Once that happens David is done for
I loved reading his book "And Away". I may have to sign up for audio books, my friend tells me he narrates the book himself and how she had to quit listening while driving because its hilarious to listen to.

Quite a covid themed expression... Bobs colorful language is also perfect material for Lee and David..

"Snipers Dream" are probably the greatest two words ever uttered on this show.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Almost.
Nothing can ever beat "Anne-Marie"
I'm from the North-East, near to where Bob was born and I have to say, his neighbours reaction to his house fire is the most northern thing ever.
“Well that’s not great is it luv, shall I pop t’kettle on?”
“They’re more like fingerprints on an abandoned handrail” is one of the funniest lines ever said on tv. I love it - and Mitchell’s response - so so much.
"Even as you poetically describe the aging process, another part of your brain is concocting the rules to an imaginary game"
Poetic.
I love that kind of humour :D
@@agdgdgwngo The fact that his own team rise against him half the time shows how effective he is. 😆
Disagree. “Sniper’s dream they used to call him” is the funniest line ever.

Def check out Sarah Millican stand up. She is brilliant!
The other, 'other guy', the one sat next to Bob is Lee Mack, if anyone was wondering
Definitely recommend checking out some of the Mitchel & Webb things, the sketch shows are a good starting point - "are we the baddies", "homeopathic hospital", "numberwang"...
If these guys do full show reactions I would definitely recommend they watch all 9 series of peep show. It is GOLD!
And Peep Show also starred Olivia Colman who is now an Oscar winner!
“But then.. Quite loudly, but not to frighten anyone.. The word “wolf!”
That’s an amazing thing to say 😂😂
I live about 5 miles from Bob. He sits next to our oldest at the football match. He's an utter legend!
What I love most about Bob's stories on WILTY is that lots of them are actually true. The Chris Rhea and the egg in the bath tale 🤣🤣🤣
Bob is a living legend! Unassuming comedy genius and you just want to go for a beer with him and give him an occasional hug.
Cheers for this guys! I really like that you do shorter reaction stuff normally, but this one had to be done and I love that you kept your word and loved it too
The fireworks story is stupidly underrated compared to Bob's other tales of woe and youth
Vic and bob in Catterick is my favourite thing they've done
There was the program House of Fools which is more bizarre than Bobs stories.
Absolute legend and one of the most naturally funny people around
Theft and shrubbery sounds like a game we played called "Grand National" we sneaked through people's gardens making animal noises until someone came out and chased us, then the grand national started,... like the horse race... we'd race and jump over garden hedges and fences to the end of the street, with winners and losers, obviously. Got really funny on new streets when they had garden ponds etc :-) ... Great fun, oh to be 13 again. Congrats on the 60k lads, keep it up
Where are you from?, did you live in our street?!. LOL
You should check out a television series called Whitehouse and Mortimer go fishing .Paul Whitehouse and Bob are recovering from heart operations and each week they go fishing as part of their mental recovery .It is just a brilliant programme with two great comedians
He does have a book, “And Away…”, it only came out last year :)
Legend.
It's great to see you both enjoying yourselves with the Great Bob
The reason the hand lion story works is because teachers confiscate toys from kids if they play with them during class. So teachers can gather weird objects like battery powered lions over time and then bring them out like that.
Well done on reaching the milestone of 60k. 👏🏻 No better way to celebrate than with the legend that is Bob Mortimer on WILTY.
Bob does actually have his own book. Pretty good I’ve heard tooand according to the book Bob is actually a solicitor as well as a comedian
Same. Vic and Bob shaped me a lot. Everything I find funny can be branched back to them.
Shooting stars was amazing
I actually just split an apple with my own bare hands while watching Bob do it on here and let me tell you it does take a lot of forearm and finger strength... must be a Middlesbrough thing from years past though as I distinctly remember doing this when I was maybe 9 or 10 so someone must have shown me at some point back then. They breed us different up here! lol
This is my favourite comedy program, and Bob Mortimer is the best of them all. And he’s so charming.
I just want people like bob Mortimer in my life ...they can make a dullomemt exciting ..and have stories for every occasion 💙
In answer to your comment - "He must have been a handful at school." My Uncle was in his form class for around 5 years and sat near to him most of that time. He was so quiet that he didn't realise this was the same Bob Mortimer he actually went to school with, until years after he became famous.
You guys are great and truly appreciate the British sense of humour! Love the reaction!
Bob is indeed a legend. Grew up watching him and Vic (Reeves and Mortimer, check them out if you haven’t seen their class). His patter never gets old.
Steve is a nature expert i remember him doing alot of kids nature shows like most deadly animals, thats why he caught bob out on the tawny owl perching on a branch not a cushion.
The fireworks he speaks of were advertised with the jingle "Light up the sky with Standard Fireworks" so they were a proper brand
Congrats guys on the 60k, great birthday gift for Daniel, much love from the UK xx
So glad you guys appreciate Bob’s genius.
Been looking forward to your reaction to part 2 for ages
Bob's appearance on 'Question Team' has become legendary. Also, him and Paul Whitehouse have a TV show where they travel the UK fly and river fishing. Its not supposed to be comedy but it is seriously relaxing and lovingly warming tv.
I met Bob Mortimer in McDonalds once, and he was just as funny in real life. He took the time to talk to me for a couple of minutes, brilliant bloke.
You have to check out the David Mitchell, Mitchell & Webb -" Are we the baddies" sketch. Love everything Bob, he's a national treasure 🥰
Theft and Shubbery and the egg are PRICELESS.
did you know that Bob Mortimer is/was a solicitor ??? If I thought I could have got him to represent me in court, I would have held up a bank !! He is a " one off " !
British comedy banter is such a different ancient form of comedy it's great!
Thank you so much for reacting guys. Love how much you listen to your audience! Best channel on TH-cam!!!!
Fantastic video guys, watched it all the way through. Bob is a great human.
And congratulations on 60k!
Bob is famous for ridiculousness and zany comedy. Ex alcoholic, member of comedy duo Reeves and Mortimer. Their show shooting stars was probably the most popular young comedy show of the 90's.
Hey guys…….thanks for the Suck…….from the Isle of Man….home of the TT , 👍🇮🇲
Bob mortimer is a national treasure. He's one of the the best story tellers in the world, funny as hell!!. I love that you guys love him from America to. You mans are great aswell 👍
Love your reaction to this video, so good to see you totally get the UK's irreverent and totally random sense of humour and banter 🙂
Mortimer was raised with three brothers in the Linthorpe area of Middlesbrough. His father, a biscuit salesman, died in a car crash when Mortimer was seven. At around the same time, Mortimer accidentally burnt down his family's home with a stray firework.
Bob makes every story hilarious with the little extras. All the names of the people for instance 😂
Watching you guys again after 3 months,, and it’s so amazingly funny watching your reactions to this genius ,, still check out his numerous stuff
It's lovely to see your enjoyment of Bob's stories and of the interaction from the other comedians! They are all so talented, aren't they? I've watched the video so many times and scream with laughter every time! Loads of good advice in the comments below.
If youd ever been to Middlesbro youd understand why Bob got up to the stuff he did
The Inbetweeners guy is Greg Davies, the host of Taskmaster, also worth a watch, where, incidentally, Bob Mortimer is also a contestant.
Lot of fun to see you guys react to this video, probably seen it more than any other on TH-cam! Bob's terrific. Congrats on the 60k:D
Congratulations lads👏
Love the reactions to our beloved comedians and listening to yous try to make sense of some of the craziness.
One of my favorites!
That's a classic but they'll need subtitles for it. 😆
Already at 60k now on to 100k. Well done lads well deserved enjoy your week
Once that happens David is done for
Bob is a fully qualified Solicitor imagine having him defending you 🤣🤣
I loved reading his book "And Away".
I may have to sign up for audio books, my friend tells me he narrates the book himself and how she had to quit listening while driving because its hilarious to listen to.
"I don't play any wind instruments, I only play harmonica."
Ok. Who's gonna tell him?
It's a reed instrument.
