The fast-moving afternoon performance covered the breadth of the band's catalog, cramming a whole concert's worth of highlights, old and new, into an abbreviated set that included "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Radio Ga Ga," "Hammer to Fall" (Queen's newest single), "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and the finale of "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions." "It was," May added, "the greatest day of our lives."
Mercury was everywhere: at the piano for the beginning of "Bohemian Rhapsody," marching around with his sawed-off mic stand during "Radio Ga Ga" as the Wembley crowd clapped in unison, singing with a reserve of emotion, owning the fans and the moment. It was a turn as virtuosic as it was surprising. Where others might have shied away or even made smaller by the moment, Queen rose to the occasion.
Everyone else knew it too. "You bastards," John crowed backstage. "You stole the show!" Queen attempted to build on that momentum, booking a comeback stadium tour in 1986. Sales were brisk, but it would be their final globe-crossing journey with Mercury, who started losing a battle with AIDS around this time.
Along the way, Queen's performance at Live Aid has only grown in stature. "Every band should study Queen at Live Aid," Dave Grohl later enthused. "If you really feel like that barrier is gone, you become Freddie Mercury. I consider him the greatest frontman of all time."

Thanks for even acknowledging my comment. There are 2 other people I requested the following Reactions to but they didn't bother. So I believe that you guys would LOVE to do these 2 Queen Reactions but both of you MUST WEAR HEADPHONES to get the full QUEEN EXPERIENCE. The whole band was amazing. Who would think a dentist astro physis electric engineer and graphic artist could mix so well to make the greatest band.
Theresa Hoover - That was their strength. Four totally different individuals who all liked different kinds of music, were highly educated and had different skills. Freddie like classical, gospel and opera. John liked soul, funk, disco and progressive stuff like Yes. Roger really disliked Deacon's tastes in music and called it bullocks. (Roger is not the most tactful person on the planet. He also cruelly called Deacon a sociopath! Very mean.) Brian liked The Beatles, Who and Hendrix. Roger preferred rock like Mitch Mitchell (Hendrix's drummer). They augmented each other. Deaky was their early electronics guy and of course he invented the unique amp that Brian still uses that enables his guitar to sound like an entire orchestra. That was a major component of Queen's music that cannot be overlooked. Apparently the fights were epic but that made the music better because they pushed each other.
That is WHY they were so good; they ALL had lucrative careers OUTSIDE of the band..... takes the pressure off so when they got together, they just had FUN

What was also amazing about this performance was that donations had only been trickling in up to this point, and then Freddie and Queen blasted in. The donations shot up like a rocket due to this truly inspired performance! This was the power of Freddie and Queen, no other band could do this! The unique and immortal Freddie!
That is absolutely the truth. Queen really jumpstarted the donations and made this a successful venture.
Nearly forty years later, this is the only performance from the Live-Aid concert on TH-cam. Once in a lifetime performance!

Uh, back in 1977 my cousin and I worked at NASA. He had top secure clearance but I just did ground work. One day we were sitting around after work in the parking lot burning...incense...listening to Pink Floyd DSOTM when I ejected the c.d. and jokingly said "I bet you can't get this onto Voyager?" Next day he showed me the disc he had exchanged it with. Now if only they have a c.d. player where it ends up at.

You have to understand. Live Aid was a sordid boring affair, and then Queen came on, and totally SMASHED IT! They took over the entire concert single-handedly.

I remember watching that set on TV and being knocked over even with crap sound fron one tiny speaker. 30-plus years later and they still wipe me out. That was a SHOW!

Margaret Howard people use those phones to save those memories, so they can relive them whenever they want, even years later.

Its time to turn up the volume, Freddie's on 🎶🎸
One thing Queen did that many others didn't was practice their set. They knew how much time they had and wanted to 1) Cram as many hits as they could into that time and 2) Make sure they hit the audience fast and hard and keep them engaged. They accomplished both to an incredible degree. Shows how professional Queen was, even when doing a short set for charity.

What makes this even more amazing apart from the performance, was that this was not a queen audience at all. Maybe some in there. Queen was a late edition to the line up so essentially no one knew they would be there. To command the crowd when they are not your audience is truly amazing.

No one like Freddie, he feels EVERY single note in the core of his body. Only 2 people in history it's said that could control a crowd that size the way he did, 1) Freddie (of course) and 2) Douche bag Hitler. The way he controls the fans is amazing! He has this divine aura about him and makes you light up every time you watch him live, he glows and you can't take your eyes off him. You want to watch a song where the instrumental part "plays your soul" White Queen (A Night At The Odeon - Hammersmith 1975)
The instrumental in between his singing is unreal, Freddie disappears and becomes the piano he is so into it, and it's as if the instruments are communicating with one another. You won't regret it if you haven't seen it yet. It's one of his younger performances.

@@arwenodinson8803 I don't think they (The Beatles) ever attempted improv in concert (perhaps because they couldn't hear themselves). They just reproduced their singles. Queen improvised - their concert versions were different every night. Just incredible live performers and, as you say, involving the audience 100% as part of the performance

Farouk Bulsara was born in Zanzibar and moved to the UK as a boy. Deacon, May & Taylor are all Brits.

Freddie was born in Stone Town, Zanzibar (now Tanzinia) - East Africa. This (as well as India) was a British protectorate and as such, the ppl born there were British subjects intitled to British or Unitied Kingdom citizenship. When the Bulsara’s arrived in England, they applied for full British citizenship, making them UK Brits!
Now if you mean Bri, Rog, and Deacy are ENGLISH, then yes...you would be correct as they were born on English soil and therefore, are Englishmen. Since Britian is made-up of more than ppl only borned on English soil, Freddie can certainly be considered British.
Some background on this concert: Live Aid was a relief effort for a massive famine in Ethiopia. There was this concert in London (about 72,000), another in Philadelphia (100,000), all broadcast around the world throughout the day and night to an audience of nearly 2 billion. It featured almost every major act at that time and each group was given 20 minutes. Queen totally stole the show (and you just saw why). Nearly 35 years later and it's still considered the greatest live rock and roll set of all time. Deservedly so. Oh, and random note: The second song, Radio GaGa? That's where Lady Gaga got her name from.
Apparently after their set, Bowie was backstage and told Freddie, "You spoiled it for everyone." They raised the bar that night.

@@robertprice6830 Bob Geldolf & Midge Ure organized it for famine relief in Ethiopia. That's why the Live Aid logo is a guitar combined with the African continent. It all started with the charity project Band Aid and the song "Do They Know It's Crhistmas?" in 1984 to raise money. Then Michael Jackson and many artists did USA For Africa "We Are The World" in the spring of 1985. Then it all culminated in the summer of 1985 with the Live Aid concerts to raise money for famine relief in Africa.

Hi Steph ‘n Jay, I just watched your reaction to Queen Live Aid, it so good to see another black woman Love Freddie❣️ I’m a lot older than you, but I’ve Loved Queen & Freddie since I was a kid, kids in my neighborhood of New Jersey thought I was crazy for like there music, I guess they thought black people should only listen to black music, which is nuts to me, I love all types of music😊. Thank you for share your reaction, I loved it, you look like I felt, and still do. I miss Freddie too😔. The movie gave me a different perspective of the other members, except I had a major crush on Roger Taylor. I Love them all as QUEEN 💗
The start of this gives me goose bumps, What a man, Performer, Artist and the others in the band are just brilliant. The other concert at Wembley is one of the best as well.
The opening to Radio Ga Ga is probably in my top 10 things of all time that instantly makes me smile. It never gets old. We definitely miss you Freddie.

I was 15 years old when Live Aid happened. We watched it in our living room in suburban Detroit. When Queen came on, I was drawn to the T.V. By the end of that performance, I was inches away from the screen in AWE. I've truly not been the same since then. One of the brightest spots in my musical journey, that continues to this day. Freddie Mercury set the standard for stage presence and moved so many people in ways that they can't even talk about. I love your reactions!!! As it should be as they are great!! Thank you for a wonderful view through new eyes!! God bless both of you. And Freddie was looking down on you and smiling. What you felt watching this, is what brought him the greatest joy. while guy to the right had to "giggle off" some of the more "steaming" moves.
But after half-time, when Freddie grabs the guitar and sets off "Crazy little thing called Love", he is totally lost in the masterpiece aswell!
Crazy Little thing called Love was a tribute to Elvis. Freddie wrote it in 10 minutes in the bathtub. Lol. Freddie also had a horrible throat infection and trouble nodules on his vocal cords and was told not to sing, but he preformed the greatest live performance ever.

I had to respond and congratulate you on seeing this video. Old fart white guy here who remembers Queen well. Haven't read your many other comments, so forgive me if I repeat something. First, no one like Freddy. So much, the US didn't quite know what to do with him. No one was just "in-your-face" gay like Freddy. Not in '85. No big deal now but back then...
But I've loved Queen a long time. Queen made people do just what both of you did. I love the pure joy on your faces. Isn't it amazing how great this show is no matter who you are. Their concerts were interactive. We sang, yelled and cried. Freddy had a 4 octave range, which almost no one has. The only voice like his is Phillip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire. At the Freddy tribute concert in 1992, all the artists realized they couldn't sing like him! His voice was a gift from God and his showmanship puts P.T. Barnum to shame.
I'm sure you got the deets on the songs and Live Aid. Ain't gonna try to add to that. But thank you, and keep the music on. Sex on the Beach has got to be your next sip on!

Queen's contribution to Live Aid is considered by many as one of the all-time great concerts. My only personal complaint is just that the camera work was terrible because they focussed so heavily on Freddie that they missed showing John Deacon (Bass) Brian May (Guitar) and Roger Taylor ( drums) even when they had solos or were heavily featured. Also, they all contributed to the background vocals and the other three ALL have excellent voices on their own. Other than that, it is just incredible to watch and hear. Thanks for your reactions!

Yes mam, Queen was on of the best rock bands. Freddie was spontaneous, and a force to be reckoned with on stage. His energy is absolutely amazing. Radio Gaga is one of my favorite songs from Queen. I absolutely loved y'all reactions to this Live concert. Freddie was a beautiful man.
The lead Guitar Brian May is also an astrophysicists who has helped NASA many times

Robert Huggler I read several years ago that Queen is the only band to have charted records and all its members were college graduates.

I was totally blown away when I found out how many celebs had college degrees, and higher. The actor Dolph Lundgren, plays a big, dumb muscle man, has a master's in chemical engineering. Nice to have something to fall back on.

I was 23 and lived 2 miles from Wembley stadium when Live Aid took place, didn't get tickets so watched it at home and when Freddie was performing could hear the roar of the crowd from my garden! I was there and the concert had been going for around 4hrs and things were slowing down as the live link to the USA was causing all sorts of problems in the arena, sound and picture cutting out.....Then this happened and the whole place just went crazy....IMO the best live performance ever. ......(All original Queen songs).

I feel so privileged to have seen this live and just privileged to have been alive when it was on.
This was when music was REAL music and in the 80’s everyone generally had a great time.
The world still had its problems it always has had always will have, but the 80’s was a magical decade, the likes of which the world will sadly never ever see again, which makes me very very sad.
I’m thankful we had Freddie for the time we did, he would be the same age as my mum this year in 2019 !

Being born in 1960 I was in my twenties during the eighties and going to numerous rock concerts, one of them being Queen in 1982! One of my top 10 for sure!
I was 18 and just graduated from high school in June....80's were the best time to grow up and watched this on MTV....Good times!!!
Nothing more special and intimate than that interaction between Freddie and the audience where he realizes the sheer amount of attention and control he has over the audience. That must be a surreal experience to be that in touch and that in sync with that many people.

The songs name is Hammer To Fall which was used in the 1986 movie Highlander, and the other is Radio Gaga
It was not in Highlander, it was part of The Works album 1984.
@@osvie0167 I do know that it was from the earlier Queen album The Works but even so, it was used in Highlander …. It was playing on the radio when the survivalist guy was driving around and he found the Kurgan sword-fighting the African immortal.
It was used in the movie Iron Eagle released in the same year as highlander and you're totally correct about it being on the radio in highlander, I had to research that one to see if it was true. Also (Fun fact) no official soundtrack to Highlander was ever released although several unofficial ones have been.
I am so grateful I grew up in the 70's and 80's. So much great music to listen to. I was also fortunate to see Queen live, they were amazing.

Queen came on at 6:41pm with a well-rehearsed 20 min set. They were asked if they would return to close the show at 9:48pm with a song from their previous album titled “Is this the World We Created” becz the concert organizers thought it was appropriate.
And remember Live aid made more than $140m (£114) for famine relief in Africa. Such a positive event in so many ways.

I was 4 months pregnant with my second son at this time, Freddie was magical he just lit up the whole arena. Queen has been my band since 1974 when I saw them on TV singing "Seven Seas of Rhye" and I just fell in love and have been that way ever since. BTW we called Freddie's penis "The Bulsara Bulge" it was the fifth member of Queen, lol.

I graduated in ‘86, and Live Aid was the year before I graduated. We watched it all day on MTV when it started in London, and finished in Philadelphia. It was heaven! I miss Freddy! Great reaction video!
