What an eloquent man. Watched the BBC House of Cards after watching the American version. Like most things, the original is much much better.

You may very very well think that, but I have a lot of respect to the Netflix company that I find it very inappropriate to comment.

Ian Richardson had such a beautiful voice and diction, I could listen to him read the phone book. I fell under his spell watching "House of Cards" trilogy during the 90's (loved it so much I bought the DVDs). He was so deliciously Machiavellian as Francis Urquhart (with his even more evil wife). It's also a bonus that he was in the BBC original "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" production. I'm going to have to find him doing Shakespeare and other things on TH-cam, 'cause I can't resist his voice. I agree with a previous comment that the original House of Cards is vastly superior to the Netflix remake, so much so that I'm not at all interested in watching the remake. The original couldn't possibly be improved upon!

He read the audiobook version of The Prince by Machiavelli. You can find it on the Amazon store and it is absolutely amazing. He pronounces even foreign words perfectly.

you've concluded that the original is vastly superior, whilst also admitting you haven't even watched the remake. that's not how reviews work. I usually agree that remakes are horrible, but in this instance it is very much it's own story and very good in it's own right.

What a splendid voice and a very good actor, not simply for Francis Urquhart which is one of the most outstanding performances I think I have seen in 50 years of television. (He reminded me of Sian Philips playing Livia in "I, Claudius" - both very sinister characters, yet one could not help but secretly admire them.)
I recall how Helen Mirren, whom Richardson had helped early on in her career, when given her BAFTA award in the year of Richardson's sudden death dedicated her award to him and was so overcome with emotion she had to leave the stage - surely a loving and sincere tribute.

At about 2:20 Richardson and Marr are joking about Richardson’s Edinburgh accent after having taken elocution lessons and they both feign what seems to be some kind of accent or character that is unknown to me. It sounds to my ear like "morning sage, pair loof". Could anyone enlighten me what they were referring to?

Such a great, classical actor, I loved him. I listened to The Prince on Radio 4 in the 1990s and that is when I first loved his skills as an actor, he was brilliant at reading that political treatise. I got the CD of that in the past two years and also the DVD of House of Cards. Brilliant, such a fine actor. He was also very good in the film Becoming Jane.

Morningside is an area of Edinburgh known for being upper middle class, and as such having a more refined accent than the rest of the city - think 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie'. A 'pan loaf' was a type of bread that was once more expensive than the then more common 'plain loaf'. If you could afford a pan loaf regularly you had a bit of money, and as such likely had a posher accent, hence a 'pan loaf accent'.
