Later, Lewis painted a honeymoon portrait of Frederick Douglass and his second wife, Suffragette Helen Pitts Douglass, on tour in Italy. The Pope blessed Lewis’s work. In short, Edmonia Lewis was the most successful artist of the 19th century you’ve never heard of!
