I drew Mantegna's Lamentation when I was a girl, and the image is very meaningful to me. Thank you for your reverent, knowledgeable discussion. As usual, I am grateful for both of you and your work. God bless you.
Always hard to see this one, but a bit more impactful today... The wounds get me every time. They make me think of the crucifixion in ways I do not typically. "There's no relief for the intensity for this vision." Exactly.
Oh my... I love getting old... I'm always experiencing something new in life especially with examples as this here. I've never seen or would have imagined this perspective. So cool as I am a Jesusfreak 😂.
As Christians we are told to REMEMBER the death of Christ, and what it means for us. As Beth touched on, the Heavenly Father came to earth to pay for the wrongs of his creatures. His resurrection conquered death and guarantees eternal life to those who want it. However, Christians are not to FOCUS not on the suffering, but the triumph of Christ. This gives us joy even in adversity. "The joy of the Lord is our strength," says the Bible. We are to think "pure, lovely, and admirable" thoughts, give thanks and pray. As we let the Holy Spirit fill our lives, it brings "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control"
This painting has always struck my soul deeply. Mantegna was clearly overlooked, he was a Master ahead of his time.
Mantegna is amazing. Love his works. Thanks for this wonderful description!
Thank you for the beautiful and benevolent description of the death of Our Lord represented in this painting ♥

Lovely video, thankyou!
Thanks to your earlier video on this work, this has become easily one of my favorite paintings. It's nice to see it revisited!
We were finally able to get back to the Brera and take photographs thanks to a change in policy.
Thanks for your excellent video.

Exactly.
This painting strikes me so deeply. I’m not even religious yet it hurts. He was right when he said there is no relief from any part of this painting

Mantegna, Uccelo and Piero della Francesca are pioneers of perspective.
Beautiful painting
Does anyone know what the dimensions of the painting are? For some reason I just wondered how big it is.
68 x 81 cm (always listed at the end of the video).
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Pasolini recreated this moment beautifully in Mamma Roma.
Shockingly contemporary for 1483.
1483 -wow
