- Join Dita Amory, Robert Lehman Curator in Charge, and Ann Dumas, Consulting Curator of European Art at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, to virtually explore Vertigo of Color: Matisse, Derain, and the Origins of Fauvism. Over an intense nine weeks in the summer of 1905 in the modest fishing village of Collioure on the French Mediterranean, Henri Matisse and André Derain embarked on a partnership that led to a wholly new, radical artistic language later known as Fauvism. Their daring, energetic experiments with color, form, structure, and perspective changed the course of French painting; it marked an introduction to early modernism and introduced Matisse’s first important body of work in his long career.
This exhibition, which is co-organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, emphasizes as never before the legacy of that summer and examines the paintings, drawings, and watercolors of Matisse and Derain through sixty-five works on loan from national and international museums, including Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou; National Galleries of Scotland; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York; as well as private collections.
With this new direction in painting, Matisse and Derain manipulated color in radical ways-nature took on hues responding to the artists’ sensations rather than reality. At the Salon d’Automne in 1905, when Matisse and Derain unveiled their controversial canvases, a prominent French journalist labeled them “les Fauves,” or wild beasts.

Thank you for this exhibition. One reason I admire Matisse so highly is that he encouraged his friend Derain to join him in developing their new art form inspired by the vivid colors and light in the South of France. These paintings are magnificent.

There are strong use of opposites, where there's red there's green, blue there's orange, yellow there's purple. This was a great time for art.
We saw everywhere Matisse during our Collioure visit. No Derain. Not an artist, but what a wonderful first exposure to the Mediterranean it was. The Light!

I have heard of Matisse before and actually copied couple of painting myself. I never knew Andre Derain and here we are both of them in South France in 1905.

Is the light in a geographical location really that different?
I lived in Ankara, Turkey, for 10 years. Then I moved South to Antalya on the Med. It was only then, and quite late in life, that the difference in light hit me like a train. Mind you, I come from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Light here is truly something else.

Illustrates the rebellion against classical "realism" in painting especially because photography does it better. Artists moved toward a "painterly" and subjective expression.
Ive always had an affinity for the greats who paint with hyper realism.

The Derain paintings are in my opinion superior and far more confident in the Fauvist technique.
Frames are generally hideous.
Breakthrough modern painting with some gaudy frames.

Fantastic explation. I would only add the anticipation of 100 year colors we use in our time in fashion for instance. Like two fashion designer. Yes it looks very simple style but is tecnichaly very difficult style catching the forms through the Little brush strokes. A rainbow of colours like is the south of France
