When an object is being overlapped, do you make the objects line thicker entirely when it’s in front. or only on the place they visually make “t” lines , or overlap the object?
T-shapes was an a-ha moment while making stencils-a place that I can safely cut and still allow the viewer of the final image to see a suggestion of depth. Great point! I hadn’t thought of it outside of stenciling. Thanks for the new a-ha!
As an art baby but also somebody who is pretty experienced with editing... I can't understate the quality of the editing in your videos. It must take such a long time to pull all this together.
Man this is one of the most helpful art tutorial videos I have ever seen on this platform. You just taught me how I can learn from my art idols in a way that makes sense and actually helps the learnings stick. Thanks so much Ben! Insane amount of value in a free YT video.
I am *so* glad you mentioned Jin Kim! I often find myself studying his work on Big Hero 6, and always loved how expressive his sketches are. I hope that someday his style will be represented in a 2D animated project, because I can't help but feel something is lost whenever his work gets put to CGI
I am amazed how well you have created your character its just look like you and after seeing your character your face is also look like stylized character
Very helpful tips! The thicker lines seem to usually suggest shadow, thickness, depth and such, giving a sense of visual "weight". Your lines in particular are very pleasing and well balanced! I generally prefer thin lines in my artwork, but it does feel too uniform a lot of times. I'm trying to incorporate a wider range of line weight and thickness.
I struggle a lot with doing things intuitively while also referencing the original artist’s work in my head… I end up leaning towards the latter which messes up how I draw naturally. BUT.. your explanations and this video were a concise way to help understand line weight concepts! Thank you!!
i had such a “ohhh!” moment in my head when you were talking about T lines! like a little lightbulb lit up in my brain. your videos and the way you explain concepts are so helpful, thank you!!!
This came out exactly when I was looking for line weight help. Everyone else made sense, but I didn't know how to figure it out or apply it until now. Thank you!
Hundreds of art videos and I feel like this is the first one I've seen that talks about line weight. It makes so much sense now, while before I always thought it was a random stylistic choice. Very impressive! Thank you!
Great video! For me, studying skilled manga artists are my favorite way to try and make sense of line weight. I love looking at pencil work that mangakas do too, especially videos. Seeing the decisions being made in real time really gives a wonderful idea on how to make those choices.
I'm looking for more male artists (I find that I'm able to learn, connect, and relate to artists who are similar to me), and I'm glad i stumbed upon your channel
I followed you on Instagram back when you had 4k followers and I was amazed by your tutorials, never been a fan of the artistic style but I DIGGED your fundamentals understanding and the way you execute those basics into making wonderful work, thanks a lot for your support and help🙏✨
wow, I'm so glad to hear another artists describe with fresh terminology what I've come to obsess over when it comes to my own line work. I'm no where near as good at planes as you, not yet at least, but I have for many years been very focused on line weight, whisper lines and the way certain surfaces and planes cast almost invisible lines that the eyes just sort of fill in. very good video
I love the new eyes analogies. I never knew how to verbalize this exact thing, but it's exactly how I feel now that Ive been drawing for 4 years. And it's exactly why I'm looking at this video in the first place!
Thank you so much i am new to my learning journey and now i am studying line works and when you said that you are studying other artists trying to understand the variations of lines i am going to do that now plus the informations you gave us that is going to be really helpful
Less than 10 seconds in your video, and seeing what you do, I hit Subscribe faster than ever before. Never have I hit a subscribe button so fast. I rarely comment on videos, but I felt like I had to say this, because you're awesome.
It's so incredibly validating to realize that I've already been doing most of these, even if it's just subcinciously! I love that I can put a name to all of these techniques now :D
Really cool tips, your shape design, line weight and coloring are so visually pleasing and unique that I immediately recognize your work. Also can we talk about the editing of the video? I'm just fascinated by the transitions and animations the drawings had
Honestly, back in university my art teacher said that line thickness should vary depending on depth. Things that are further away from the viewer should have thinner lines. However for me personally I feel that thickness should vary depending on form change. The side of the nose should have a thicker line than the constructive/whisper lines at the tip and onstrils, because form doesn't change that much. And of course light coming from above thus a good area for thicker lines is forms that are moving away from the light.
The editing really got the message across, on top of your great wording skills. I understood fully and have a good grasp on what to look out for now. Thank you very much
I didn't know I needed a video like that! Whenever someone tells me what I love and hate about art, it's a process. I love sketching, it feels so good, I could sketch all day and night I hate Lining, it feels just like tracing my already done sketch, nothing creative being done here. (Which can now change) then coloring... gosh I hate coloring, feels like work, not art XD And then we have shading, I melt away shading, it's the best thing in the world, Shading is awesome, seeing how a piece slowly gets more and more depth. So Now I just gotta learn ways how to make Coloring fun and art's gonna be much more fun again
I think you are the next proko! Great videos with out of this world quality! Amazing audio, and I have no words left to describe the animations, the special effects, and the video edit! I also loved the 1 min sponsor! I usually skip them but not yours! I am saving just so I can buy the gumroad tut. 🎉🎉❤❤❤❤ I'll have to rewatch this video a few times just to digest the amazing information, I'll make sure to take notes.
While I've watched a lot of videos on line art (which were helpful), this video you made added a lot more insight on line art/work. Thank you so much & love the creative video ✨
By far one of the best art channels out there in youtube. Your first two videos already starting out as a banger! I know you'll have a really great time growing your audience! Good luck!
Thank you for the video, excellent work. Maybe I'm just in a noisy place, but it's challenging to hear even at full volume, maybe consider increasing your volume range. Best of luck Ben!
May sound odd but I'd kill to have him in ImagineFX! All hail physical media! Being able to hold art, even if as a reprint, has an indescribable feeling.
I love your style, and I think your ability is incredible! I would like to know if you intend to make a video about character consistency (keeping the character the same always, especially the face), sorry if there are any errors in the message, it's just that English is not my native language
ben this is fantastic! i'm trying to work on my line work and practice using pens and markers but i find myself struggling with trying to express form and end up relying on shadows but since i'm relly just winging everything, my sketches can end up messy which is fine but they're not clear. i enjoyed your thoughts on your loomis video, thanks for another great one! :))

These are the classic line-weights we used while working for Don Bluth. Makes a huge difference.
One of those rare youtubers where I watch the ad from beginning to end

omg that self portrait of yourself at 0:35 somehow looks EXACTLT like while being obviously cartoony
Finally someone puts it into terms instead of just "darker closer lighter further"
As an art baby but also somebody who is pretty experienced with editing... I can't understate the quality of the editing in your videos. It must take such a long time to pull all this together.
The transition at 3:23 showing all of the lines being the same weight is exactly what I needed to see. Thank you
Instantly subscribed after watching
frank is always a cutie the whisper line is defiantly added to my artistic tool belt

This is amazing man! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the mortals. And thank you for the sketchbrush. It's fire 🔥
I watched the sponsor ad fully. Well deserved for so many reasons! Thank you for the video. ❤
As an artist who recently felt stuck on line work. This was just the video I needed to help me open up and see my art with NEW EYES ❤
Line art always confused me but this video was so helpful, I now can practice with my new eyes and sketch with more intention.
You had me at line weight and line width!
I'm just getting started with drawing and this has opened my eyes in a huge way 😮
Glad to hear it!
Whisper lines, that's actually a helpful term. It helps me visualize drawing a caricature and I'm not very good at those. Thanks 👍

Clean lines and good shading are my kryptonite, most of my drawings technically have good anatomy but are very dirty and smudgy
Incredibly helpful video, Benjamin. Your edited videos are top notch!
Please make more videos like this. I enjoyed this one and the other one. Big ups to you🔥

I always learn so much from your page/channel
in drafting the terms that they use is line value.. it gives depth on a flat surface drawing like floor plans..
This video came just in time
the way you explain the process is very well made! love the video
Very informative and interesting. Cool how the concepts and techniqus relates to oil painting as well.
I love your style, and I think your ability is incredible! I would like to know if you intend to make a video about character consistency (keeping the character the same always, especially the face), sorry if there are any errors in the message, it's just that English is not my native language
