  • We filmed this video back in July when we did the factory repair job.
    We just demonstrate how we mix our sand and cement in a belle mixer , the size that many DIYers would use . We have very heavy 40 kg bags of sand and also show the Sika concentrated plasticiser .
    We do a 4 to 1 mix ......enjoy

    I like how tidy you keep everything. The shovel in the bucket, ply under the mixer, folding the empty sand bags (great as rubble sacks), materials stacked neatly

    I use that idea of yours keeping the shovel in a bucket of water it's so obvious but a great tip for keeping shovels clean, I will get my young boy to watch this as he is in his first year at college doing his nvq in brickwork and when out with me struggles to keep mortar consistent but as we all know bricklaying is all about the more you do it the more experienced you get and it's one long learning curve 👍

    I was taught to gauge the mix by bucket because the amount you shovel in the morning will be different as the day goes on the more tired you get the less on the shovel, still do it that way. Great vids guys keep em coming 👍

  • @timmargereson332
    @timmargereson332 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hiya boys, glad you're back 👍.
    I always use the sika if I'm knocking up OPC, but you mustn't use it with lime mortar.
    It's so easy to use unlike these 5ltr bottles where everyone just splashes some in (then a bit more for luck 😂), or even worse Fairy liquid 😱😱.
    As for the PPE issue, I left site work when I was told to wear - long trousers, long sleeved hi-viz shirt, hard hat with scarf at the back to protect my neck, gloves, steel toe boots, ear plugs, safety goggles & sun tan lotion all to felt & batten a roof in high summer !!!!! That's the only time we get a good tan as we can only have holidays in the winter 😡😡.
    As for mixer dust, I've got a couple of "Splash Stoppa's" - they just fit within the drum & stop all splashes, dust etc - look them up 👍👍.
    Hope you have a great week & sorry for the rant 😃
    Regards
    Tim

    I’ve found, across the country, depending on where the sand comes from, the viscosity of the mortar using exactly the same mix ratios will vary...I think it’s down to the volume of fines in the sand and the type of sand it is...by far the most viscous mortar (stiff using the same ratios) is that in the south east, where the sand quarried is in close proximity to chalk...!

    A stand would make things a little easier and it is nice to see you doing some sort of gaging of the aggregates. However, I do think that half the amount would mix better in such a small mixer and also I think that the ratio of the mix for normal bricks is a tad too strong at 1: 4 unless you are laying Staffordshire blue bricks. Nice tidy site though and good to see you look after your mixer by not banging and bashing the drum.

    • @SteveAndAlexBuild
      @SteveAndAlexBuild  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David Dore . The stand got sold at a car boot sale years ago . They are only any good if you are mixing Concrete and tipping into a barrow .
      I explain in the video the sand bags are 40 kg , the cement 25 kg so 2 1/2 bags sand (100 kg ) to 1 cement (25kg) . 4 to 1 . I was taught that gauge in college and on site so have used it for over 33 years . As for the mixer my pet hate is mucky mixer .
      Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏽

      Bricklaying With Steve and Alex well 33 years is a good stint in the bricklaying game and I like your videos just wish I had time yo do some myself but unlike you I work on my own since my father died over 12 years ago at the age of 82 I am now in my 45 year of working as a bricklayer. The only time we did 1: 4 mix was when we used a product called Master Crete ( made by Blue circle) which had a built in plasticiser and was therefore not as strong as using OPC with Febmix. Always make the mix so when it has ascertained it full potential setting it will not exceed the strength of the brick being laid. It does look good sand though unlike some of the rubbish that is used on other building sites and lovely to see that you look after your tools and using clean water for the mortar. Keep up the good work and keep an eye on your equipment as these days it can walk as I found out to my cost this week. Regards DD.
