DC is very cinematic with their piss filter in all of the movies (I am being ironic ofc). Please for the love of all that is Holly stop with that yellow filter. We get it is dark it doesn't need to use this filter find another...
Civil war is darker than most other with the same cast, what makes stuff darker isn't just the colour palette or the amount of death, but rather the focus on the darker aspects of human psychology...while most dc movies are on the same level of dark as Marvel ones, DC ones are generally more mature while Marvel is kinda more kid friendly (doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it), and tbh, most X men films would beat both Marvel and DC at being mature...but hey, that's just a theory, a film theory
They look so different, because DC was originally about mystery with crazyness mixed in, Marvel is less about mystery and is more about simply superheroes. The reason as to why batman and superman are so much more popular than the other superheroes in DC, is because their villains are all about making it hard for them to see their plots coming, whereas Marvel villains, and most DC villains for other heroes for that matter are laughably on-the-nose with their evil plans, and we the audience/readers see their evil plans coming miles away. I mean think about it: "DR DOOM", and in ALL the comics, films, and TV shows, the villains' evil plan is no challenge at all for the heroes to figure out. DC stands for detective comics, which naturally gives them tones of curiosity, of "what's going to happen next?" . Marvel sounds like a fireworks display, which naturally makes it have a tone of awe as opposed to curiosity, because we the audience already know what's going to happen: big evil plan, big epic fight, big epic win, and there is no mystery as to who is up to what, why when, how and where. The thing about mystery is, it is naturally a dark thing, whereas laughably overt heroism/villainy is more comedic.
DC always been the most creative and a hardcore risk taker, DCEU was a failure but their Elseworld films are way better and impactful than what someof the DCEu and MCU put together, even though there are masterpieces like iron man 1, ZSJL,Man of steel, captain America winter soldier etc

I didn't noticed it until now but DC films do feel alot more like the vision of their creators from way back with Superman 1978 to the Dark Knight trilogy even now with the Wonder Woman movies, Zack Snyder's trilogy, The Batman, Joker, The Suicide Squad and the many more films that came before and are to to come with James Gunn's new upcoming DCU with a heavy focus on creator's vision don't get me wrong I am not in any shape or form talking about critical or commercial success especially when in comparison to Marvel I am talking about the feel and tone which always varies and feels distinct from project to project and clearlt reflects the Director's take on these characters and this world and with exceptions like all the MCU Phase 1 movies or James Gunn's the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy or some offshots like Multiverse of Madness with Sam Raimi I don't see a creator's vision coming out of these movies they all just.... blend in like watching all 3 MCU Spider Man movies gave me absolutely no idea on Jon Watts's vision as a director unlike say Jon Favreau with his Iron Man
This is why Marvel Animations is about to destroy the MCU. Not entirely... but when it comes to content? Marvel Animations is about to make the MCU look like a complete and utter peasant. Why? Becuase that brand has the keys to have creative freedom! Look at how amazing X-Men '97 looks with its art style and visual aesthetic. Something the MCU barely tries to achieve for their films. No cinematic creativity. Even though Marvel Animations will serve the MCU in some form or way! They have the keys to do whatever they want and create whatever they want with full creative vision while not having the MCU breathe down their neck. Not being restricted. The mcu is obviously restricted.

To each, their own. I don't think Marvel films are awe striking, as they do genuinely have very flat color schemes. But I think that's a purposeful choice - with DC films it feels like a story, a fantasy, but with Marvel it feels like real life, and to me that's just as immersive.
There are some really good points this video makes, even though I am admittedly more a Marvel fan than a DC fan. BUT I need to argue a little about the CGI point they tried to make. DC is grittier but my favorite movies and two of the most filled with CGI DC movies are Wonder Woman and Aqua Man. My best friend loves Shazam but that is so much CGI too. I’d say they are equal, Marvel and DC.

honestly, that's why I liked marvel projects like Loki, both doctor strange films, Avengers AoU, Wandavision, and the netflix shows. They have a visual style that's different from the standard cookie cutter MCU projects. Even the Iron Man films had a lot of dirty and raw shots that made it feel real while still keeping the superhero tone up. The first Thor films had a lot of dutch angles which I honestly liked but many didn't. AoU, a film criticized by many for absolutely no reason at all, has a lot of beautiful shots that reflect the tone of the scene or conversations. The dinner party, the scenes with ultron, the banters between banner and tony, all of it have colour gradings that reflect the tone. The Iron Man vs Hulk fight also had a lot of cool shots that made it iconic. The winter soldier too, had a lot of raw shots that made it feel a lot more grounded than say Civil War. I think, ultimately, the reason why Marvel doesn't incorporate cool cinematography is due to the audience. Some appreciate darker tones, some prefer light, some prefer wider shots, some prefer more blurred shots. Instead of trying to please everyone with these, they please no one and try to keep it simple to focus more on the quality of the shot rather than the way its shot. You'll really see a more creative direction from Phase 1 and Phase 4, the so called black sheep of the Marvel films.
Yeah I agree, I know Eternals was critically panned, but man that movie had some beautiful shots. Phase 4 tried, but story and anchors for driving story just wasn't there. I agree with Loki and Wandavision, the creativity was thriving during the pandemic.
It's fascinating how much solely on visuals we perceive things differently. MCU have dark and thoughtful storyline like Winter Soilder and Civil War. In WS the scene where Zola describes people ironically giving away there privacy to protect that very thing , gave me chills. Honestly, it's haunting to imagine being surrounded by nothing other than machine and it tells you how it's manipulating humans into submission that even by their own will. But I think most tend to forgot this critical scene bcs it is shot in generic style. If that same Zola scene was shot in The Batman style, with intricate camera dynamic and immersive perspective & sound then it would hv impacted lot strongly. Creating a lasting impression. By the way, Deadpool and Wolverine looks pretty good. The director did insist on shooting in real life location which is paying off. So I guess , Feige might from now on let director hv more say. I hope if MK movie gets made they bring Matt Reeve or a director with tasteful cinematography bcs the contrast of white suit with dark background and a gaint Moon glowing behind MK will be iconic. But it can only be done with accomplished cinematographer.
I love both Marvel and DC Films. But I remember much more memorable shots from DC Movie than Marvel, take Batman 2022 for example, during the penguin chase scene and when batman crashes penguin, look at the scene where batman drifts to show the impact of penguins vehicle. Beautiful shot
If DC ever go through yt comments i hope they know we love their art style just the way it is,to this day the 2022 Batman movie is my favorite movie; sound design, unique shots,LUTs etc its the pinnacle of what i know DC represents - dark coolness
Okay how come this doesn't have tons of more views? I've personally got no hate towards Marvel but since Endgame it's been kinda drifting further away from me, especially since I too notice and don't like almost every movie having no darker lighting effects and such and the characters not getting the depth they really need, DC's cinemagraphy have been decent for me and doesn't disappoint visually at least and The Batman made it all feel so much more promising again I'm hoping they do bring out such masterpieces to watch and enjoy
it feels like marvel are made for kids (like those people cheering at a screen) and dc for adults, marvel is so colorful , predictable, no think just enjoy (and full of jokes), while dc is ..cinema, serious movies for your senses to enjoy in silence.
Marvel did find out how to make consistently success movies, BUT then they lost their touch completely! Most of their movies since Endgame have been flops.

I prefer the vivid and bold approach of many of the Marvel movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Iron Man. The studio still uses night scenes, moody shadows and colorized effects at times. While cinematic might have a lot more post edit creative style, plus lighting effects while filming, I am not a fan of the overly dark look of the latest Batman when it gets too gritty and very little light on set. Perhaps somewhere in the middle of both extremes is best. Pick the scenes for the best lighting setup for the story. Half cinematic perhaps? Games of Thrones went there on cinematic lighting at times and that was good. Except the final White Walkers battle was far too dark tones as many fan critics say.
DC has always been way more aesthetically pleasing to me and the characters have a lot more style and flair (i also love the fact that their villains are more complex in both personality and style) and overall has way more contrasts between the dark and bright (sometimes neon) colors while the marvel is kinda always just kinda bland and lacking to me but that being said i still love them both (maybe DC just a tad more...)
Superman's my favorite DC character. Do I like Man of Steel? Yes. Do I think Superman needs to be all dark and depressed? No. He's a guy wearing red and blue spandex with undies over his pants and a freakin cape. How can you take yourself THAT seriously while wearing that? Notice that Marvel characters with really elaborate and colorful costumes tend to take themselves less seriously. Like Iron Man and Spider-Man. And then there's Captain America. Yeah he's wearing the American flag, but he's more serious than his counterparts because he's a soldier. He's not a rich boy in an armor or a high school kid in spandex. He's a soldier, and those are his uniform. It's a symbol from a time where the US was a beacon of hope, and the people in the Marvel universe look to Captain America for hope because that's what he represents by wearing red, white and blue. So just because a movie looks darker doesn't mean it's better.
Great video. You highlighted points that I as a movie watcher don't typically think about in regard to various filmmaking styles. It's kinda like how the first 4 Harry Potter films have bright coloring and r more adventurous and light-hearted, but the 5th and 6th have very dark lighting with more tension. Marvel films have been nominated for/have won Oscars, so they are also capable of being serious and reach Scorcese's standard like some DC films have.

Ya flying without any forces and a lasse that lights up and makes you tell the truth pretty realistic 💀 bruh superhero movies supposed to be unrealistic lol
DC always make movements in slow motion. A hero walks, slow motion. A hero jumps, slow motion. A hero attacks, slow motion. Group of heroes poses in front of the camera? Slow motion. annoying slow motion.
DC falls flat when it assumes it is Marvel's competition. That's when they release trash like BvS and Justice League. After making WATCHMEN, that shoulve been the point they realized how special they really are. I don't understand why they lowered themselves after Man of Steel to do those "power ranger amusement park" films. Thank God, Matt Reeves has revived that DC flamboyance. THE BATMAN has brought back that feeling i got from WATCHMEN.

Marvel doesn't need dark and violent to be entertaining. They have a rich lineup of characters with actual substance and depth. Sure, DC might have its little edge and gore, but that just makes it feel like it's trying too hard. Marvel is all about fun, action, and adventure. It's like a comic book come to life. And let's be honest, who doesn't love a good superhero story? So keep your dark and violent DC stuff. I'll stick with Marvel and its colorful, entertaining roster of heroes.
Marvel did an amazing job harmonizing the infinity saga films, especially with the odds against it. It was not meant to be "Tree of life" cinema... it's an ode to our childhood. Dc arguably accomplished some of that in isolated instances ( 2-3 characters. Christopher Nolan's work probably the apex.) But overall failed to harmonize stories and character arc's consistently AND visually. Recently Marvel has gotten too lazy with green screen , and DC has gotten more inconsistent. It's deeper than simply visuals, though that is a big part of it.
DC are money makers, Marvel too...the best for DC are Superman I and II, Batman 1989 and Batman Returns, TDK trilogy, Snyder's JL trilogy, Joker, The Suicide Squad, The Batman...W's all around...Gunn's DCU coming too
Simple = for the masses It's hard to digest a lot of heavy, concentrated products. Especially hard to do it in quantity. Marvel got the formula right, you can watch it at any mood and switch off 95% of your brain. The always more "complex" formula tend to lose even if it's "better" it' became a niche, think League > Dota Street Fighter > Tekken Fortnite/Valo > CS Then again, DC is just too messy without a proper DCEU except that short period Kids growing up all knew Superman, Batman but MCU totally made characters like Cap/Thor/Iron-Man a household name.
You miss the point. DC movies are called dark not because of the colour pallet, but because of the tone. marvel may be blowing up entire civilisation, but they also crack stupid jokes every 10 minutes, so it's hard to take them seriously.
Id say Marvel definitely aims more for the “futuristic sci fi” theme in its art direction while DC tries to be more gritty and dark. Marvel’s visuals are cleaner and more refined to communicate the idea of a society superior to our own, while DC’s visuals are typically dirtier and more muted to convey that this world is less of a technological utopia and more of a grimy, almost dystopian society where life might actually be worse than it is irl. Its less about cool flashy effects and more about raw realistic action
I feel conflicted about this. Because, I don't Marvel movies for treating theirs movies the same type movies. But, I don't like DC comics movies for focusing mostly on Batman instead of others characters they have.
what these directors doesn't get is that you have to see superheroes movies through the actual people who grew up reading the comics and watching it's animated series lense. Not their own exagerated film perception. Marvel works cos it delivers what actual superheroes fans like and want to see. Not a highly dramatic cut all dark and shady, but a colorful display full of action and excitement. As long as DC keep missing it, will keep on failing behind Marvel

Not the dc people totally dissing marvel 😂 I love dc’s style of filming and respect the grind 😊 for me, I’d rather watch a marvel movie just because I like some of the character’s stories better & bc I actually do like the grand, almost fake looking entrances of the characters. But I really love the idea of actually making a camera lenses dirty for a shot. I also noticed marvel’s “bland” visual style did make it feel more relatable, and I liked that part of mcu movies. Although, many of the fight scenes were very immersive and not at all bland. Overall, I like both styles of filming and I think both franchises are very successful. (Just the dissing was a little unprofessional, unless there is a reason im missing, which I probably am… I’m only going off of this video)
Maturity is when you realise that "Marvelization" of modern films is why cinema is actually dying. the over-stuffed cringe humor in serious scenes, woke agendas, corny dialogues, predictable plotholes and this has been consistent not only in MCU since Endgame but also in other mainstream commercial movies. After sometime all this CGI fest becomes a visual diarrhoea because its all generic. one of the main reasons why the DCEU which started with a serious approach, fell off after trying to copy MCU in Josstice League. As a comic book fan of both Marvel and DC , i just hate watching these new MCU/DC movies, however The Batman n Joker are still promising.
DC fails cos they rarely give any other heroes a chance and when they fail when they try one like Green Lantern, they go back to Batman. Marvel succeeds from comic book failure by giving different studios the right to make films. Hence, Fox Sony and Paramount were able to introduce different characters. 70+ characters have been introduced to live action. Whilst DC only has 15+ Also, every time they introduce batman they fail to give us his sidekicks. Why does Joker have his own film, its completely unnecessary
Constantine and the Burton/nolan batmans were pretty much the only good dc movies. Marvel movies are just more accurate, better dialoge, perfect casting.
one thing for dc is that they are really creative with their color grading style, like the combination of green, blue, and yellow red with their unique camera cinematography proportion you can tell thats a dc film

0:07 CORRECTION: a 'Theme Park film' would be Pirates of the Caribbean & the Haunted Mansion, both, LITERALLY based on rides at Disney World and Disneyland! Tisk Tisk, Mr. Scorsese.
Yeah because there aren't any theme parks based on marvel. Ahem ahem Universal studios
Universal?😊
Most DC movies feel like they're in a post apocalyptic earth where even during the day it seems dark but they say its waaay easier to edit dark footage than any other way of filming
But then again I live under a rock (metaphorically speaking) so what do I know
Let's see how the New DC will deal with this ,,can they win audience plus creators trust with their lots of projects to come in future ?? Time will tell
I heard that James Gunn is honning in on creative vision. So hopefully, the films will try to be cinema to a great extent.
Being darker doesn't mean its cinematic lol. it'll make a stereotype among new creators (for those who didn't understand sht I meant we can still obtain cinematic shots with light placements and stuff)
IT WAS NOT ABOUT BEING DARK

@@left4deadR wtf I'm not a fan boy lol I just hates comic book movies 😂
@@left4deadR oh btw hi fictional character fanboy what's your role model batman? joker? Oh or Spiderman?
I love both but DC hits me so hard. They make arts.
I didn't noticed it until now but DC films do feel alot more like the vision of their creators
from way back with Superman 1978 to the Dark Knight trilogy
even now with the Wonder Woman movies, Zack Snyder's trilogy, The Batman, Joker, The Suicide Squad and the many more films that came before and are to to come with James Gunn's new upcoming DCU with a heavy focus on creator's vision
don't get me wrong I am not in any shape or form talking about critical or commercial success especially when in comparison to Marvel I am talking about the feel and tone which always varies and feels distinct from project to project and clearlt reflects the Director's take on these characters and this world
and with exceptions like all the MCU Phase 1 movies or James Gunn's the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy or some offshots like Multiverse of Madness with Sam Raimi
I don't see a creator's vision coming out of these movies they all just.... blend in
like watching all 3 MCU Spider Man movies gave me absolutely no idea on Jon Watts's vision as a director unlike say Jon Favreau with his Iron Man
This is why Marvel Animations is about to destroy the MCU.

Superman will start it, i believe.
The first major marvel hit was Blade, and it was dark
The batman amazing film
These are some of the reasons why Dc movies are called Dark,
1.Dc movies aims for a more realistic approach,Dc explore more grounding and matured themes, like morality, and the consequences of power
2.source material,Dc movies has reach history in Dark and complex style and design,These influenced the tone for Dc live action movies
3.Character origins,Dc character from Batman wonder woman and superman, always has a traumatic origin story, which leads to intense and darker narrative
Realistic Approach,Dc aims on using realism, more often than CGI, Characters in marvel areboften Green screened,
To each, their own. I don't think Marvel films are awe striking, as they do genuinely have very flat color schemes. But I think that's a purposeful choice - with DC films it feels like a story, a fantasy, but with Marvel it feels like real life, and to me that's just as immersive.
X-MEN was shown as a trailer at the first showing of BLADE. Blade was first.
wild thumbnail ngl 💀

how?
There are some really good points this video makes, even though I am admittedly more a Marvel fan than a DC fan. BUT I need to argue a little about the CGI point they tried to make. DC is grittier but my favorite movies and two of the most filled with CGI DC movies are Wonder Woman and Aqua Man. My best friend loves Shazam but that is so much CGI too. I’d say they are equal, Marvel and DC.
Blade was Marvel's first hit.
It came before them, but it wasn't a hit at the time.
@@4D1Characterror It was a huge hit at the time, especially for an r-rated movie. Were you even born because it sounds like you weren't there.
@@BrimsHL it was not a HUGE hit. It didn't lose money. But people weren't talking about it like Xmen. Buzz wasn't crazy. The Matrix came about a year later and got huge numbers for an r rated movie. Blade only kinda got past blockbuster status.
@@4D1Characterror it was still a hit and a hit for an R rated movie. The only reason Spider-Man and X-Men made more was because they were PG-13. Everybody and their mother was talking about it. Including white people. Obviously you have no idea what was going on at the time.
@@BrimsHL it was the first r rated movie I saw in theaters. I loved the movie. I know there was no one talking about it because other than my brother who saw it with me, there was no one talking about it around me, and no big buzz about it on TV.

Who made the thumbnail? 😂
I despise the MCU and DCEU but I love comic book films like The Batman, Joker, and Blade. Cinematic universes are overrated.
Sometimes when i'm watching marvel movies ,i feel like if i'm watching a cutscene from a video game
DC Elseworld movies >>>>>>whole DCEU trash
Nothing but facts
just depends who is making the film, not neccesarily the company
honestly, that's why I liked marvel projects like Loki, both doctor strange films, Avengers AoU, Wandavision, and the netflix shows.
I hope the upcoming Dc cinematic universe movies are visually good
I love both Marvel and DC Films.

But isn't it bcos marvel movies are more realistic and relatable, that why they're loved?
They’re loved because they’re treated like sports.
Exactly why they are loved 😂
5:30 LMAO
DC is better, objectively speaking, setting aside personal tastes or woke criticism
Give Martin a watchmen graphic novel
Already a legend made a movie based on that but it doesn't completely recognized sadly
@@dedP00L the director 's cut. The theatrical was mid
I think this is hard to judge when you have so many directors, writers, production designers and Directors of Photography that are involved.
personally, i like the more colorful approach marvel took, but the excessive cg has gotta stop

WOWW I thought the complete opposite
I wouldn’t agree. Both can be either unrealistic or realistic. Daredevil is more “realistic”, Avengers is more unrealistic. The Batman is more realistic, SnyderCut is more unrealistic
They are both about superheroes 😂
Right so a guy flying at the speed of sound is realistic cool ( not dissing DC I love superman) I do prefer marvel but most stuff after endgame hasn’t been good
Ya flying without any forces and a lasse that lights up and makes you tell the truth pretty realistic 💀 bruh superhero movies supposed to be unrealistic lol
No, DC falls flat to its competition like Josstice League, Shazam (I enjoyed btw), The Flash, Aquaman 2, and Black Adam.
Zach Snyder made Watchmen is which is why I loved Man Of Steel, BvS, and Zach Snyder Justice League. This wasn’t Snyder fault, it’s Warner Brothers.

Isn't The Flash a DC movie?
I see you're not into the superhero genre so much, so the answer to your question is overwhelmingly yes.
@@jeanp.5929Thank you. The Flash is not a dark and moody film as portrayed here and neither is Wonderwoman. When the presenter says DC movies are darker/whatever do they really mean Batman as thinking about it Superman films weren't that dark and moody either.

While DC struggles narratively, their cinematography, costume design and musical scores have always been superior to Marvel in my opinion.

DC uses a lot of dark scenes and shadows to hide their crappy FX department's shoddy work.

to the people saying marvel is shallow, this whole video is nothing but a shallow explaination for people who have no clue or havent seen any super hero movies
You can’t think.
Marvel - kid friendly
DC - dark and violent
The reason I'm a DC fan and think marvel is boring is because DC has something that marvel doesn't
I'll stick with Marvel and its colorful, entertaining roster of heroes.
primarily it is a marketing decision first: marvel targets kids, while DC goes for young adults of all ages 😁😁
The moment I saw the thumbnail I knew something was off. Editing a picture just to get clicks is low and disrespectful.
DCU plots are majorly Noir, MCU plots are Thrillers. It will be interesting to see how James Gunn approaches Noir films
the way Marvel broke their rule with Doctor Strange 2
Dr Strange 2 could have been really good, but execs got their mitts on it in post.
DC are money makers, Marvel too...the best for DC are Superman I and II, Batman 1989 and Batman Returns, TDK trilogy, Snyder's JL trilogy, Joker, The Suicide Squad, The Batman...W's all around...Gunn's DCU coming too
Simple = for the masses
It's hard to digest a lot of heavy, concentrated products. Especially hard to do it in quantity.
Marvel got the formula right, you can watch it at any mood and switch off 95% of your brain.
The always more "complex" formula tend to lose even if it's "better" it' became a niche, think
League > Dota
Street Fighter > Tekken
Fortnite/Valo > CS
Then again, DC is just too messy without a proper DCEU except that short period
Kids growing up all knew Superman, Batman but MCU totally made characters like Cap/Thor/Iron-Man a household name.
You miss the point. DC movies are called dark not because of the colour pallet, but because of the tone. marvel may be blowing up entire civilisation, but they also crack stupid jokes every 10 minutes, so it's hard to take them seriously.
Its why im worried James Gunn will flatten Dc's visual lingo
That’s why DCU to me is a flop already, they’re copying MCU already. DCU = MCU lmao
DC have great animation series and animated movies whereas Marvel has better movies..
Nope.
dc actually feels like movies at least in style
Funny how they try to show why marvel movies aren't that good but they are actually much more liked by the audience than dc😂
The audiences tend to be idiots bud.

Marvel movies are just better structured and more immersive
@@medusa1358 Not really.
that is all changing, james gunn a marvel director has already made a movie unlike previous dc movies 'suicide squad'
what these directors doesn't get is that you have to see superheroes movies through the actual people who grew up reading the comics and watching it's animated series lense.

Marvel is for Kids, DC is for men.

Cause marvel is for kids.
Exactly, facts.
Whilst DC only has 15+
Also, every time they introduce batman they fail to give us his sidekicks.
Why does Joker have his own film, its completely unnecessary
Constantine and the Burton/nolan batmans were pretty much the only good dc movies. Marvel movies are just more accurate, better dialoge, perfect casting.
DC so strong
Marvel movies only have brief moments of drama between fights. 🤣 You lost all credibility with that remark.
Watchmen DC is a gem
