I just bought a sample of this yesterday. I'm so happy to see this review. Zoologist is such a unique and fun house, and I love what they are doing. I already have T-Rex, Dragonfly, Penguin, and Rhinoceros, and have samples of Squid, Scarab, Camel, and Tiger on order. One of their perfumers is Prin Lomros who has a brand of her own that is doing some really interesting things. If you haven't already, you should definitely check her out.
I have a fullbottle of Chipmunk and travel sizes of Squid, Rabbit and Harvest Mouse ( love them all ) really looking forward to grabbing a full bottle of Harvest Mouse soon !
@SeldomlyOften it's the smokey incense type thing it has. She not a fan of those type of scents. I've really bought into the storytelling of the brand and the presentation but for her it's just an odd smell.
Thank you, Danuel, for sharing your thoughts on the house Zoologist and on Squid, in particular. I personally tried multiple times a bunch of them, and while some of them are easy wears (cow, bee, harvest mouse, penguin, hummingbird), others are challenging to my nose, at least the ones you mentioned they are. Nonetheless, smelling them makes for interesting experiences. If I didn't have a wishlist of perfumes I would like to use casually, Zoologist would be a brand I'd like to connect with.
Very good review. You're right it's not easy to find the brand; I'm in the UK and bought direct from the brand because it's cheaper. I don't have anything like Squid in my collection and it's one of my favourites 🐙. I also love Bee, Moth and would love to get Elephant, Chipmunk and Rabbit

@@DavideV101 smells nothing like Megamare. Megamare is bright and floral in the opening while being salty, dirty and fishy in the mid and dry down. Squid is a sweet incense with a strong ink note, very dry feeling.

I’m only just getting interested in exploring aquatic fragrances, and looking for something unique but also natural, as my wife is very sensitive to synthetic ingredients. Besides Squid and Seahorse, do you have any recommendations?
From Zoologist or other brands? I think that once of the best places to start is the Sea Collection from Lorenzo Pazzaglia, he has many sea moods to suit all taste. I personally like Sex Sea and Artik Sea.
@@ethanrrs it’s a sweeter, simpler version of both those, less fresh also. Copal Azur is the best of the bunch. Zefiro from Xerjoff is also remarkably good (have that one also as I’m an incense fiend)
@@SeldomlyOften ah, I just realized aedes perfumery is located in NYC where I am, so that will make it really easy to go and sample copal azur! I think squid will be interesting , and thank you for mentioning zefiro, I'll keep an eye out.. Still seems like it may still be a fight between copal azur and lineage - i enjoy most things from bertrand duchaufour, most notably his incenses so copal azur should be another hit. And of course I love Karine V.S amouages a ton. But adding some other fragrances like squid and zefiro will definitely keep the search interesting and fun!

I like Lineage a ton and I’ve hovered over the purchase button many times, but it would be objectively redundant, it would be mostly a gesture of appreciation to the perfumer and the house more than anything else 😅
I was late getting into Zoologist and just tried them for the first time about a year ago. I love Squid, to me it comes across as eating salt water taffy on a pier, with the ocean breeze blowing by. I also love Moth, and I just bought a bottle of Penguin. The new King Cobra is coming soon and I'm already hearing really great things about it. I'm sad that they are changing their bottles, though. Victor Wong said that they put every label on by hand and because the company has grown, the process has become too time consuming. They are switching to a round bottle that can be labeled by machine. They have shown the new ones in their Facebook Group and they look ok. They look a bit like a potion in a fantasy film, but I still like the current bottles so much more.
@SeldomlyOften I really enjoy Penguin, but it is a bit lighter than other Zoologist scents. I feel that it's a bit of an anomaly within the house. The projection is good, but the longevity isn't what I typically get from an extrait concentration. After 4-5 hours or so on skin, you have to be very close to detect it. It's better on fabric, of course.
That's interesting that the name has so much monetary pull with you. For me it's the exact opposite. I'd much rather have a perfume assigned random numbers by a computer so that my imagination could take over and fill in the associations myself. Quite possible that mobile devices will have headspace sensors in the future so that you can effectively digitize any smell in the environment. They already have light and acoustic sensors after all. From there, an AI could recreate the scent using a 3D printer and you'd have your association dialed in and personalized. Methinks that AI tools have already been in use since last decade to predict naming conventions for designer fragrances. At least in the indie realm, there's still a degree of freedom.

I’m like you when it comes to utility based products, fragrances to me are well beyond that; I consider these luxury items, the great “necessary uselessness”, and for these, it’s all about the idea. I’m the first to admit I don’t “need” fragrances, the same way most people don’t “need” an automatic watch; I’m not interested in getting a perfectly functional automatic watch that doesn’t inspire me in any way, I don’t even need a watch. I just like to be inspired by the creativity and dedication of humans.

I think I'm finished with my amouage explorations for now and I'm thinking about which brand next! Zoologist is on that list of consideration
