Another fascinating & entertaining video Daniel. A friend bought Chergui for me many years ago when I dropped out of fragcom for a while. I wore Chergui subliminally everyday without taking much notice of the smell as such. I wore it mainly because it was like a second skin. It was never intrusive , it was just there. Like a coat / jacket you love and wear all the time because it's comfy and easy. My love for fragrances was ignited again a year ago. I went on a frag binge. Bought literally everything from every big frag house. One day I found my bottle of Chergui which was nearly finished. I thought aaaah my old friend sprayed it on and the magic happened. It was like reconnecting with a dear old friend you lost touch with and remembering how much you miss hanging out with. I got it this time around . I had to buy a new bottle because I had casually rinsed my previous one. In many ways the tone is reminiscent of Dior homme Intense or Dior Cuir Cannage. In the way they let you wear/own them . They are like invisible cloaks. Your description was spot on. It is a wonderful fragrance which is strangely sombre and uplifting at the same time. It burns itself into the memory because it is so passively unique. Keep up the good work 🙏🏿
Thanks so much for the beautiful write up. You are spot on with the "cloak" reference, it's such an easy wear with layers upon layers of depth to peel back. Love it.
Compliments Daniel. You will soon reach 5k subscribers! Great review for one of my fav Lutens. I honestly think that Lutens and Shiseido are doing a very good job in term of reformulations . And Mr. Lutens has always been honest enough not to deny reformulations. You made me laught when I heard that you do not get compliments from co-workers. Interesting your comparison with Odor 93 (that with Viole Nere and Encor is the only one I have). Would love to see some Fusciuni in the forthcoming future if you can. And if you like Chergui, try to get a sample of Fumerie Turque: I bet you will love it.

Hats off for coming up with scent adjacent examples for Chergui. Even the vibe is hard to pinpoint. I just can say I need to sample Odor 93 now. Again, chapeau!
Excellent review of a difficult one to explain! I just bought a 100ml bottle after draining an entire 50ml over a couple of years, and I still struggle to put my finger on it. To me, similar to you, the only thing I can ever say is that it smells like autumn. That said, I have noticed that when wearing it in different seasons/weather, some notes pop more prominently than others. One day it was so rose-forward that it made me a little nauseous (not being a rose lover). Other days, the iris really comes through. I have never been able to locate the tobacco in it per se, and I have lots of tobacco frags. The next time you have a chance to smell fresh hay, do it, because I do think that is the most predominant smell (it's surprisingly sweet and clean smelling, not earthy or dirty like you might expect). Don't you live in the countryside? Ask your friendly neighborhood farmer for a handful! You have Odor 93! Love that one too, but yes very, very different. Monstrously powerful and so very gothic. I reserve it almost exclusively for rainy, moody days. I have not smelled Baronda in a long time but I remember thinking it was going to be a manly man, burly thing and it wasn't at all.
@@DaveNYC so true, this changes constantly, maybe that’s the reason why I struggle to grasp it. To me, the closest stuff I smelled is Sundowner by Tauer and Longevity by Testament
Great fragrance, great review. It has this barbershop/soap kinda vibe in the first few minutes which then dissappear and you get to enjoy the main elements in union.
I just watched your review, which I thought interesting. I initially smelled Chirgui at Barneys NY ten + years ago (maybe 12 or so) and found it too heavy and sweet for my liking. Or perhaps I simply was younger and felt this smell did not suit me back then. Funny, but one year after that I returned to Barneys and got me a bell bottle of Vetiver Oriental which was darkly stunning in every way. This was the original scent before any later reformulations related to Shiseido purchasing Serge Lutens. Now I just bought me a bottle of Chirgui, which I think I now like (despite or because of reformulation). One thing I noticed in your reviews and thought worth pointing out - I'd caution you about the so-called re-sellers that you mention so much here and in the next vid I watched. Well, some (most?) of what they "re-sell" online is actually fake, a copy that was concocted in Turkey or Thailand, or elsewhere, which explains their lower prices. This is an unfortunate state of affairs, but everything gets faked nowadays - Rolex and Omega watches, Gucci clothes, Louis Vuitton & Hermes bags, fancy wine from top vineyards, even top-tier olive oil and cheese gets faked, and yes, fragrances as well!! The bottle that you hold in this video may look ok from afar as faking any label is no longer a problem (white or black Serge Lutens labels included.), but your bottle has this funny tubular top- Which is strange as all the rectangular "export line" bottles - all the way from ten+ years ago that I used to buy ("orange blossom" for my mom for Christmas) - and UNTIL NOW, in both 50ml and 100 ml have ALWAYS had (to the best of my knowledge) ONLY spherical tops. It's this house signature design for their eau de perfume "export line", and if you were to purchase direct from Serge Lutens website or from one of their legal retailers, you can still expect to receive a bottle with a spherical top. I cannot outright state that your bottle is fake, as it could be an eau de cologne or eau de toilette i.e. weaker formulation than an eau de perfume that still comes with spherical caps, but seeing you speak of resellers and display a bottle with an atypical cylindrical top made me worried that your bottle could be fake... Cheers!
@@yoryteperman429 thanks for pointing out caution when purchasing, it’s a very important message. My bottle is 100% real, the little spherical top is the cap that comes in the box but it does not have an atomizer. In the box you also get the cylindrical cap with the sprayer, most people use that as dabbing is a pain and not a good experience.
Thanks for explaining. - Yes, indeed, I remember an atomiser being an extra piece- in fact they gave me a dropper and an extra glass tube with an atomiser when I bpught their "bell bottle", but I never used an atomiser with an eua de perfum as I find it to sprey too much at this higher concentration and makes one smell too strongly (i.e. provrrbially - when your smell enters the room before you do). Which is why I assumed it must have been an eau de cologne or eau de toilette, for which atomisers work rather well... Cheers!
A great review, as usual! I very much enjoy your "options" at the end - please keep doing them. I think my favorite Uncle Serge (as Ram calls it 😉) is Feminite du Bois, but they're all equally amazing.
