I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota and when it gets really cold outside, people start complaining but for me it is the other way around. I love wearing overcoats because it allows me to add an additional layer to my cold weather outfits. Now, what is the difference between an overcoat, a topcoat, and a great coat? Check out this video here where I explain the terminology.
So how did I end up with almost 20 overcoats in my collection? Well, over the years, I bought vintage. I really like vintage overcoats for 4 reasons.
Number 1, most of the overcoats you can buy these days look boring. Usually, they come in plain black, charcoal, and navy. Sometimes, they have zippers and weird details and I just do not like the look of it. That being said, black is the one of the most overrated colors and if you want to know why, check out this video.
The second reason I do not like modern overcoats is the weight of the fabric. In my opinion, they are way too light and while that is a popular trend among suits, for an overcoat, you want the fabric to be as heavy as possible so it keeps you warm. Overcoats made 50 or 60 years ago were a lot heavier and sometimes, they weigh up to 10 pounds or 5 kilograms or more. Honestly, these heavy overcoats keep you warmer than any Moncler down jacket or Canada Goose jacket. If you want to learn more about those, check out our reviews here. I mean, if I want to be able to find modern heavyweight overcoats, I probably would buy them but maybe that is something we can make for Fort Belvedere, stay tuned!
The third reason I like vintage overcoats is cost. Not a lot of people wear them anymore but they used to back in the day, so the supply and demand works in your favor. Oftentimes, you can find fantastic overcoats priced between 5 and 200 dollars versus a new coat from Brooks Brothers, for example, this Polo coat will set you back $1700. Now, I am sure it is a great coat if you wear it a lot, the cost per wear is good but you can find something comparable for 5,10, or 50 bucks, why not take that?
Last but not the least, the fourth reason I like vintage overcoats is the variety in patterns, in textures, and details. You just find classic paletots, half belts, full belts, you find raglan sleeves or regular sleeves and also colors and details that you just do not find in most modern overcoats these days.

The best bite of British Army clothing I liked was either called the Falklands parka, or Artic parka, name varies according who you speak to.
I liked the idea of the removable quilted liner, to regulate warmth.

Overcoats are simply the best things to get vintage or second hand. I got two single breasted wool coats, a corneliani and an indochino, a navy trenchcoat and a longer ankle length dark grey coat. All of these were around 50$ each and compared to the retail prices it's really hard to justify ever buying one of these new. I've read that luxury brands today such as burberry burn unsold garments in order to keep the prices high and that's another reason to avoid supporting them.

I would be delighted if Fort Belvedere started making some nice thick wool overcoats (specifically long double breasted ones)
I searched for years looking for a long dark double breasted wool coat with a large sailor style collar (basically a peacoat but "overcoat length") eventually gave up, had to buy a vintage military airforce overcoat online. Had it dyed darker, lined it with a nice tobacco plaid lining, and had it tailor fit. Was worth it, have received dozens of compliments, but it cost me well above 1000. You'd be surprised how hard it is to find something so simple and timeless like what i described - Definitely think there would be a huge market for it.

Great video! I've just recently bought an over coat for a thriftstore/charity shop in the UK. It cost me £10.00 and I'm very pleased with it. I knew it was a good, heavy fabric and a nice tight weave. I Googled the maker: it was made by 'Invertere', made in England and a maker that predominately made high quality sporting coats and outwear. I'm very pleased with the coat and I get a lot of compliments when I wear it.

This is why I love this channel. I thought the same. There's just something not right with modern coats and jackets, I think it's because fashion companies design their products to follow the current trends. Of course these companies need to stay in business, that's why they fit what the demand is, but at the expense of quality and style. This is the reality now.

Keeping warm is all about insulation and keeping the body heat trapped. Yes, heavy overcoats usually will do that better than lighter coats in similar material. However, nothing beats the combination of a material breaking the wind and the down as insualation - nothing beats puffiness for insulation ;-)

I am desperately missing a Loden coat in your collection. A coat made out of Loden makes a very powerful, not loud impression

Hey Sven, you should do an Aquascutum versus Burberry video. Overcoats of sheer quality.

God I really love pieces you have in your wardrobe. I was lucky to buy a vintage light long wool overcoat for about 33 euros in the men vintage thrift store. But because it’s the only men vintage thrift store in the city, probably in whole country where I live, it’s much more difficult to buy high quality vintage clothes for good prices. Especially things like overcoats. In the regular thrift shops even I visited quite lot of them, I’ve never seen any type of overcoat to buy. eBay or Etsy are than the solution. But not the best one too. Because when the seller of thing you want isn’t from Europe, the price for shipping and also for some fees isn’t usually very low. So the final price isn’t often so nice and affordable. I don’t want to complain, just say that it’s sometimes not too easy to have high quality mens wear especially when you’re student :-D. But I’m trying it anyway and your video really help me. Thank you. Grüße aus Prag :-D.

It's nice to see how dapper you can look by buying second hand cheap pieces that are actually high end. Thanks guys, you're making classic fashion accessible!

The Gentleman's Gazette isn't actually a monetized channel as far as I'm aware. They take pride in not having sponsors or advertising aside from their Fort Belvedere line of quality accessories.

Sven did you do a video about measurements, I had difficulty translating American coat, suits etc measurements with those in Uk and Europe. Btw I live in Europe. I saw that there are differences in size between British and American ones. And translating that into an European size is confusing.

It doesn't get cold enough where I live to wear heavy coats. I have a collection but I can't wear them for too long.

Coulda found a shot of the light rail, not the El; we're in the Twin Cities, not Chicago...I'll let you have all of the cold, my friend. Having to work out in it dampens my enthusiasm for it.
