I think the wedge solution is perfect. It is one of those details that people in the know will spot. It's not the easy option and not being the easy option speaks volumes.
I'm a 73 yr old retired tool and die maker and am enjoying your video. I have been building and designing motorcycle racks, your work and organization is great, keep up the good work.
Loving the jazz tracks. It's a refreshing change from all the other machining and welding videos I watch. Your solution to your tight radius was interesting. I actually liked the oval look of the sawn-and-rewelded tube, and mentally filed the idea in the back of my mind.
Just stumbled upon this video..I LOVE people building their own things. Ive always wanted to build my own bike and other things as well. Im not a welder and simply cant even understand how OR why it even works..lol..and ive been told how before..It just blows my dang mind..You have some great skills man..BRAVO!!
I'm glad that you can enjoy the videos. I love when folks who are curious/like riding bikes see my videos. It gives you an appreciation for the wheels under your feet.. how much work goes into a bicycle frame! :)
I am 54 and i believe if you were around in the mid 70's when BMX was taking off your skill's would rival that of webco, red line, mongoose, mathews etc even without our friend the computer. Without a doubt you would have made a mark in the industry or at least the baddest bike on the block.
If you succeed please bring back a set of mongoose motomag rims. without a doubt the most beautiful rims ever made (IMO). Not to mention they will test the integrity of the best frame builders ...even yours what tha hell bring back 2 set's and i'll throw in 20$ over retail (89.00$ circa 1975 ) for a set . good luck.
Welds are still looking great. Your solution to the miter cuts is a bit unorthodox but it turned out just fine. I'm cherry picking your taco jig idea. Looks like it works really well. Great episode :)
Just came across your video, really nice fit up and attention to detail! I have no idea of your experience, but I only get that sparking behavior welding 4130 when the insides of the tubes were not sanded and cleaned with acetone as well as they should have been. Your tube prep looks great externally though, so I assume the insides are the same. Keep up the good work, look forward to the next video!
+Eric Olsson insides were clean too but you never know, maybe i missed a spot. I noticed also that once it starts to spark, it needs to be cleaned again well so maybe there was contamination inside i couldnt reach at that point. Thanks for watching!
Because you have the equipment, making a tube bender that suits your needs isn't that complicated. Check out Keith Fenner's channel, he's an experienced machinist and in a few of his videos (search on his page) he talks about how he made his. Alternatively, there's also Tom Lipton, yet another skilled machinist who also has a few vids on the subject. It's really a two, three day project once you have all the parts gathered round.
Nice music, Nice clear voice, Nice welding style. A lot of organisation and structure. Keep it up, I am not a Bike fan but your videos are just perfect and relaxing. Good job. (You got a new French subscriber :)) I give you Power and Courage for the next steps.
Pithy Bikes : You make a very good job. One important advice, I think you should try some Electronic Welding Mask, with automatic shading mode. You will save your neck, because of your head mouvment before welding that can be bad after time. In France you can find new stuff for 40$. The combinaison with TIG can be nice. I wait your next video to see how you will resolve the problem between brake and chain. It give more humanity to your videos ;)
Matthew Gischus Why are your panties in a twist, not fond of jokes? I echo your question right back at you, you got anger issues you need to sate by starting petty arguments on the internet? The only one picking a fight here is you xo
I want to start building bicycles, what would be the absolute cheapest way to go to start doing so...even if its extra work right now its a financial issue for me, however I must produce quality ,I will not compromise on that aspect.
te mando una chiva(bicicleta)vieja y me la soldas? .....no era un chiste un saludo desde uruguay...............arriba las chivas...................................el mejor invento del hombre.........
Hey really enjoy the videos. Just wondering if the occasional weld problems might be due to sealing the tubes? I've found with aluminium, heat causes the air to expand and blow out the weld unless I drill a small vent hole.
The recommended material is Bronze. One of the best makers of frame building tools uses it. Checkem out :) www.paragonmachineworks.com/frame-building-parts/frame-building-tools/heatsinks.html
Most of my tigging experience is with stainless for me copper works I have a small tool box filled with heat sinks and various tig lenses if it works it isnt silly but i will have to give bronze a look
Hi I am planning to make a cargo bike like bullitt. Do you have any upcoming project designing and building a cargo bike? It would be very helpful if you do so. TIA!
Got it, i'll go browse thru their site. If it weren't that big, I wouldn't have noticed it. Thank you! haha! Kidding aside, I guess it's ok that way it can handle the amperage rating even if it's just ground.
+Bike Life Pinas its pretty light for what it is. I never weighed it tho before i built it.. Its completely finished now and i dont want to disassemble it ;p
hehehe. Thanks for replying :) now I wonder how heavy the whole bike is. :) watching you work is like therapy for cyclists. It's like observing how a baby develops and finally being born. What's your next project?
I think the wedge solution is perfect. It is one of those details that people in the know will spot. It's not the easy option and not being the easy option speaks volumes.
+Andrew Wilson never thought of it that way!
I'm a 73 yr old retired tool and die maker and am enjoying your video. I have been building and designing motorcycle racks, your work and organization is great, keep up the good work.
Thanks for the encouragement. It really means a lot to me when professionals say I'm moving in the right direction.
It's not a bicycle. This is a work of art.
+Robert Kocián wow thanks for the complement!
Besides from the great video and welds. I like that you showed how the 'arm' wasn't functioning and the fix for that.
For every build, there's at least one tool that needs fixn :)
Loving the jazz tracks. It's a refreshing change from all the other machining and welding videos I watch.

+stoparret glad you liked it. So hard finding background music that people like. :)

This was the episode I've been waiting for! The frame looks great.
+BlockCylinder 👍
The wedge fix looks much cooler the way you did it. Crazily more complex but much cooler.
+Owen Pidcock :) who ever said bandaids arent cool? ;)
Your videos have brought me a whole new respect for bikes, and builders. Keep up the great work..
+164 Racing thats great to hear! When i started i had no idea what o was getting into. I too gained respect for all the builders oit there.
Can't wait to see it finished, been a good series.
+Craig Maddison you're in for a treat! :)
Wow, it’s really come together well. That’s a heavy-duty rack. You know your kid is going to be giving his friends rides on it, don’t you. 😄
+Richard Hayter totally! I need to make a seat for it.
Watching your welding is really motivating. Congratulations on a terrific job!

the arm broke, then you just made a new one. love it!
The beauty of tools.. tools that make more tools. :)
Welds are still looking great. Your solution to the miter cuts is a bit unorthodox but it turned out just fine. I'm cherry picking your taco jig idea. Looks like it works really well. Great episode :)
It's the Pithy Taco tool.
+Jess Neal yeah the taco works great and only took 15 min to make.
You made that rear rack extra beefy. You know your son is going to have 2 of his friends riding on the back.
7:50 WOW its a dream fit !!! Well done , bravo!
+BisdremisKostas 👍
I might do this out of mild steel. Nicely done. I only have an angle grinder and a welder, wish me luck!! haha
Awesome man, it's really cool to see how far your welding skills have come. Keep it up!
+scrubby4130 thanks MN
+Pithy Bikes a lifetime to master!

+michele vitarelli tjanks for watching
Nice!!!! One frame how many liter-Gas do you need to TIG a frame?? 5l 10L 20Liter?
masterpiece.VULCANO!
Hi, very good job ! You using TIG method for welding ?
I love you, man! (platonically)
I love you all! Make bikes not war.
+mypiratemonkey love all around!
Why did you feel the need to state platonic love? Afraid of revealing your real feelings? ;-)
I love you Pithy, sexually (albeit from afar).
Why did YOU feel the need to pick and potentially cause an argument ??
Matthew Gischus Why are your panties in a twist, not fond of jokes?

Awesome as always!
Thanks Mike. :)

+Richard HART it probably was that!
what tig machine are you using here..really like your style sir thankyou for sharing with us.
+jeremy doblinger everlast 200dx
Great job
+Francisco Manuel Rasero González ty!
nice welds!
:)
heat will cause metal to draw out thus popping a tack... copper blocks will make a great heat sink keeping your tacks from breaking

What thickness tubing? 4130? I’m taking a beginner welding class and want to build a frame. Thanks!
sub'd great video and the frame looks amazing. can't wait to see the bike!

What video has your torch setup description?
sweet video, subscribed.
Cool ground strap... Do you have a link where to get them? thanks!
+merkantelismo i purchased a braided wire from mcmaster. I wish it wasnt as thick tho.
Got it, i'll go browse thru their site.
