My mom came home from the video store one night with this game in hand, telling me they rent Nintendo games now, and the whole course of my life changed. This was the very first game I ever rented and I remember going with her to return it to find an endcap in the children's section full of them. This was before I had Nintendo Power and I was shocked to see how many games there were that I had never even seen before. I returned Kid Nikki, got Excitebike, and the rest is history. Two bucks for two days!
This was one of the first game my dad bought us. The nastalgia is incredible. Along with this i remember playing rygar, kid icarus, metroid, super mario bros. (of course), gradius, life force. I loved the nes when it first came out.
I remember countless hours spent glued to my TV set, playing Kid Niki with my best pal growing up, with Iron Maiden "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" album playing on the stereo. I can almost hear the actual Kid Niki soundtrack and the Maiden album playing separately in the air back then lol! I miss it very much ! I have a amazingly well kempt NES console in my room now too, and must re-create this vibe by ordering nes Kid Niki game and busting out my Iron Maiden LP at the same time again!!!
Even though Kid Niki looks nothing like his badass box shot (complete with sunshine yellow wifebeater, an enviable rattail, and his bloody sword), he's still the star of a pretty excellent, if simplistic, Irem platformer.
This one isn't bad, although I have to say that I liked Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 2 and 3 more. They were pirated as Super Bros 16 and 14 respectively, and those are the versions you could buy in some European countries. :D I believe they were also much easier to play through without dying!
I loved this game as a kid. The levels and boss fights are so memorable. Just thought about this game randomly tonight and searched for a gameplay video. I will never forget how much grief the Horned Witch used to give me!
This was the very first game I ever rented. There were sequels to this game but I don't think they were ever released here. Mad Monk was probably the most impressive boss to me as a kid. "FOOL!"
Great game and great memories playing it with my cousin! We could never complete the game, I think the centipede boss always got us! The first boss with the giant head still cracks me up!
I always got killed by the Horny Witch (as I called her when I was 10) at least once. And I loved killing the body segments on the Green Grub on level 4. There was just something so satisfying about it.
Man, my mom got me both this and ninja gaiden when I was a kid, gaiden was a little too complex for me to beat at 8 years old but this, I played over and over to the last levels ever time. Such a great time to be a kid.
The arcade version has percussion, it's just that MAME had it incorrect for a long time, but they fixed it a few years back, sounds completely different these days.
Thank you for this, It was my favorite game at six or seven! I put so many hours into this game. I think I got it with my nintendo as a gift from my dad that and Super Mario Bros., but this was my game, sooo fun, thank you very much! My sons favorite game at the same age is Rocket League :p .
My grandparents had the actual arcade game to this…. The game always froze once we got beat the monk… this video doesn’t have the original sounds though like the “yow!” I hen you beat a boss

Actually Data East just licensed the game for US release, it's actually a series made by Irem.

I completely remembered that grating music 30 years later

The arcade version is on ps4 along with many others like Rygar, double dragon, legend of kage
ATTA BOY!
This was the very first game I ever rented. There were sequels to this game but I don't think they were ever released here. Mad Monk was probably the most impressive boss to me as a kid. "FOOL!"
Anybody else notice that Mad Monk drops F-bombs?
Wow... this was the very first video game I ever rented, too.
Cool, you even show the hidden rooms! I only knew of the ones in level 4.
I never realized how faithful the NES port was to the arcade original.
Great game and great memories playing it with my cousin! We could never complete the game, I think the centipede boss always got us! The first boss with the giant head still cracks me up!
Haven't played that game honestly sence i was a kid about 9 or 10 years old
I always got killed by the Horny Witch (as I called her when I was 10) at least once. And I loved killing the body segments on the Green Grub on level 4. There was just something so satisfying about it.
I loved the music from this game too much as a kid. This was one of the few games my Granny liked, too XD

i got yelled out by my mom playing this game downstairs and glued to it when she was ready to head out..ah the memories....
If you hug the bouncing princess, you get another 10k points.
Nice! Haven't seen or played this sense I was little. Never was able to get to the third boss or finish the game 😒
The other longplay on here doesn't show the bonus rooms. This one is superior.
I liked the haircut and Mace Ball he swung. And the songs.
Ultimate Warrior logo in Death Breath's mouth when he jumps. I always noticed that as a kid lol.
I've played this game a lot and I never knew about the secrets.. my entire life has been a lie...
Nostalgia trip 😢
Wow, what a difference the NES percussion made to the music compared to the arcade.

I had this on Apple IIe, it was harder, looked worse, and had no music. Managed to beat it eventually but it was tough!
My favorite NES game by far!!!!🤩💪🏾🙌🏾💯!!!!
Atta boy!
thecowboy2 I always thought it was "Ah ta boy" when I was a kid. Like some Japanese thing
I had this game.

Who was your favorite enemy to fight in this game? Man, Data East made quality video games.
This is originally an Irem title, not Data East. It was licensed to DE for distributon in North America though.
The one that cusses you
The Horned Witch! That was the one boss I kept dying to way too much when I was a little kid XD
And this whole time, I thought you were trying to beat the game to save some damn bird. -_-'
You are one rad dude!
When you’ve realized you played this game all wrong and there’s hidden levels… OMG!
i remember finding 2 of them on accident but couldnt remember where they were.
My grandparents had the actual arcade game to this…. The game always froze once we got beat the monk… this video doesn’t have the original sounds though like the “yow!” I hen you beat a boss
THERE WERE HIDDEN ROOMS???
Classic NES punishment. Do it again and again until you memorised every enemy. Die and go back to the beginning.
The Japanese boxart looks Toriyama-ish...
Nintendo power💪🏿💪🏿
THIS GAME CHEATS!! (whips controller at the TV)
What in the actual fuck
Not sorry to anyone this saddens or angers but this game ranks right up the with Legend of Kage on the "Gawd Awful" scale.
Atari2600 level design
Honestly, it looks like a joke.
But it wasn't it was a challenge
