Ikr, I had to resort to Nintendo Power and How To Win At Nintendo Games 2, by Jeff Rovin for situations like that. Frustrating indeed, because I can't recall any in-game contextual clues that would hint at such things.
I recall one of the Townsfolk gave you a cryptic message somewhere throughout the game. I remember kneeling everywhere after that to see what other secret passageways I could uncover

Yeah me too, If anyone had Simon's Quest as a kid, they know the struggle. Didn't have Nintendo Power so I searched every inch of the game but I could never figure out to kneel by the water or to throw the dagger at the orb. Well thanks to the Anniversary Collection for ps4 I am back about 25 years later.
My son and I played this game for hours every day. I had to call the company to find out about the kneeling down part that lets you continue the game. We tried everything for days to try figuring that out.
30:15 - Hearing "Bloody Tears" combined with that sound effect when unlocking the secret path that unlocks a new path with the third mansion in the game is so satisfying in my opinion!
I actually paid on my Wii and repurchased this again after 20 yrs. I still remembered my 16 digit code to go left at the first town and finish the game! I love everything about this game.

I remember going all the way right once and get that wall with the small pit after the cemetery. You could do a high jump to sequence break but you just ended up at a dead end in this purple green setting with a Marsh. Cool part of the game you were never meant to go to
@47:42 The counter of hearts is actually a four-digit number, stored as two BCD bytes. The game just caps it at 256 for no good reason. This is one of the things I fixed in my retranslation.

Holy shit, this game sings like a canary - not hard to see why it helped spawn Metroidvania. Thanks for your work making the definitive version of this game.
57:50 The ironic part is, the Ring is - spoiler here - important to Dracula's evil plan. (Simon was NOT trying to resurrect Dracula intentionally, as far as storyline goes, most fans just assumed that. He was trying to gather the parts of Dracula's body to burn them. Had he thrown the Ring away after using it to enter the Castle, Dracula would have been gone forever.)

I had the Nintendo Fan Club issue special when this first came out in late ‘88. I remember taking that issue with me to read over the weekend while I stayed with my aunt after my uncle died. It was a tough time but we did our best to get through it. There were a lot of really interesting things going on then with games though. Nes publishers were trying a lot of new things with their biggest titles - the Mario and Zelda sequels were both open ended, non-linear games and I never think of those two games without thinking of Castlevania 2. Those 3 games defined that particular time and it was such a cool thing to see big companies being innovative and taking risks. This was the only game out of the three that I didn’t get a chance to play at the time. I was 9 when it came out but I didn’t end up playing it until 24 years later. I also made it through somehow without looking anything up, with the exception of one part, when I needed to get out of the lava area faster. Not a perfect game - it has its flaws, but to me it’s a classic.
I loved this game but i did spent years and years playing the first part of the game, meaning i did not know i had to kneel at that cliff to advance nor did i know you needed to show the heart to the ferryman to get to the other castle. With that said I remember thinking is this game broken? I would also end up staring at the cover of the cartridge and seeing dracula on there thinking, is he even in this game? dreaming on what his castle would look like and how difficult he would be to beat since I had already played Castlevania 1 I ended up beating it after about 10 years when a friend told me about the kneeling part and the ferryman. And i still love the game.

Edward Nigma 313 I don’t even think the gameplay was difficult. What made it difficult were the handful of secrets necessary to advance the story, that honestly no one was going to figure out without a strategy guide of some sort. The blue gem at the water, the red gem at the wall to summon the tornado. The secret path with the boatman. Really just not possible to follow in game clues to realize that. As far as enemy conflict and boss battles, this game doesn’t hold a candle to the difficulty of Castlevania 3 or even the first one. But that’s all just my opinion. I feel like the guts were here for something fantastic. You can tell some of those big rooms should have been epic boss fights that they just didn’t include for whatever reason. And also the translation left a lot to be desired.
@@RotaryriderFD Pretty much spot on. You would have to be some sort of super genius to advance in the game with no help at all. Swiggity Swooty true, I finally got the best ending the other day. The fire works well as long as you don’t slip off the controller. Much easier to farm for hearts inside the mansion before Dracula
1:05:26 Gee the Count was really wimpy in this one wasn't he? Just stayed there in one spot and didn't do squat while having an 8 bit smirk on his face the entire time. Well done.
I just attempted another 100% run of this game, and this time I managed to finish it just before night of the 6th in-game day arrived. The last time, I finished it on the morning of the 7th day. The trick was to move as quickly as possible in Sadam Woods, ignoring the jumping blobs as best as I could. I think morning of the 6th day is the quickest anyone can finish with 100% completion. I also managed to get to level 6 by leveling up in the mansions.
The problem with leveling up in the mansions is you dont get EXP from the hearts after reaching a certain level. I think to max out the only enemies that give you EXP are the ones just before Dracula's castle, in the graveyard.
I don’t think there’s ever been a good night to have a curse. Just saying.

My favorite game of castlevania
Simon's quest was the best castlevania on the NES
Thanks! This game would be near impossible without a guide. Followed along but not quick enough cuz I only got the normal ending :(
Happy this video is still a help.
Buy a white crystal ...
....first time buying meth in a video game.
"I'd like to exchange a white crystal for a blue one..."
Trades said meth for a toilet cleaning tablet.
No sir, he bought meth then traded it for Walter Whites meth....
yea but you later trade it for some WW blue
The white crystal is not buying meth

Throw garlic on the floor and let him walk into it.
you know you can just walk past him right?
Much easier to beat Dracula with the knife death drops
@@christophergiardina8268 maybe the quickest way, but you can just spam the fire ball when he appears and he stays there untill he dies.
Swiggity Swooty true, I finally got the best ending the other day. The fire works well as long as you don’t slip off the controller. Much easier to farm for hearts inside the mansion before Dracula
I swear I almost never beat any game but I got lucky and found the secrets way back when.
Prossess PROSSESS DID THEY APPROVED THIS!?
1:05:26 Gee the Count was really wimpy in this one wasn't he? Just stayed there in one spot and didn't do squat while having an 8 bit smirk on his face the entire time. Well done.
With a little hacking, you can even kill Drac with garlic.
I just managed a 100% run where I finished day 5, 21 hours and change in-game time. It’s tough, but can be done
The problem with leveling up in the mansions is you dont get EXP from the hearts after reaching a certain level. I think to max out the only enemies that give you EXP are the ones just before Dracula's castle, in the graveyard.
