  • The seatpost on my steel Genesis IO has been seized for many years but as I am looking to sell the bike so need to remove it. So I'm in my buddy's garage and between us we are going to sort it.

For anyone still struggling we flipped the bike bottom bracket angled downward and pulled downward while turning with some force it worked its way out under a minute.

You should heat the downtube not the seatpost as heat expend metal. In fact heating the downtube while wrapping icepacks around the seatpost is a better way. And lot of penetrating WD40.

Should have removed the cage bolts as well.... Squirted some WD in there when upside down in the vice

Your use of the heat gun is complete nonsense as you haven't understood the material properties. Aluminium expands much more under heat than steel. So you should cool the alu seatpost (shrinks in the cold) and heat up the outer steel seat tube (expands under heat). Btw. at 220°C the aluminiumhydroxide from the corrosion breaks up and you can remove the seatpost with little force. No problems with the paint at 220°C.

Be advised, the heat gun cannot work on its own, as the thermal expansion of aluminium is larger than steel so either it will size more or crack frame.

Why not use a 3 foot pipe wrench after putting PB anti seize at the top and the clamp slit.. Then use heat on the bike frame to expand the frame.. and ice pack on the seat tube to shrink it'

I always slap some Greece on the post.
Never use quick release as they go solid in no time.
You risk damaging the saddle locking it into a vice.
Glad you're mate got it released in no time.
Re do the seat post with a good quality Greece twice a year and it will move easily.
