  • The seatpost on the thrift store bike I bought was completely frozen. Watch my adventures in trying get it unstuck. I eventually got it out. The bike is a Mongoose Sycamore with a Cro Moly frame. The seatpost was aluminum. It appeared to gotten corrosion down inside the seat tube. I resorted to using penetrating oil, ammonia, apple cider vinegar, cold, heat, pipe wrench and a cheater bar.

The lovely relationship between steel and aluminium, you can't weld them together but they do it on their own.

Love your channel! Best down to earth, real life repairs and tips.
I just extracted a post which had been stuck since the mid 80s. Mine came out easy... I turned the frame upside down and squirted WD40 from the BB hole. I gave a few squirts every week, repeating for 8 weeks. Then I clamped the post in my bench vice--two firm twists and it popped!

Worked on turbine engines and in the hot section we used torq CB - kimball Midwest on seized bolts. Works like magic. Remove the BB spray in the frame towards the seat post through out the day, let it sit overnight. Remove saddle and twist on vice. Comes out like a charm. If that doesn’t work, try dry ice to shrink the seat post

My goal was to remove the seat post WITHOUT damaging the frame. A seat post is easily and cheaply replaced. A frame not so much. Your guess is good as mine. I used ammonia, vinegar and PB Blaster. And lots of muscle to get it broken loose. If none of this works, you can also cut off the seat post about an inch about the seat post, and then hacksaw vertically inside the seat post.

Still looked dry on the bottom... go figure. The pipe wrench has worked for me Wrapped with leather or cloth. Then tapping up on the seat post with a rubber mallet and or board. Keep adding penetrating oil.

I had the same problem with the handlebar stem and a seat post on a Batteglin frame from the early 80's. I went through all the solvents, external freezing, ammonia, etc. - no joy. Actually, I had to saw out the seat post with a hacksaw blade, and I gave up on the handlebar stem because I did not want to chance damaging the frame. Last winter, the temps were down in the single digits for about a week, unusually cold for my area. The deck and siding on my house was "POP-POP-POP" (firecracker loud) all week long. I Googled about the noise and learned that the metal screws were shrinking because of the cold temps. I left the bike outside overnight and removed handlebar stem the next afternoon with moderate resistance. If I had only knew that when I took 4 hours to hacksaw the seat post with a blade. Hope this helps.

This guy's patience is impressive. Had this happen to me before and tried many similar approaches. In the end reverted in inverting the bike and filling seat tube with Drano with some spectacular results! That stuff is evil and should be used with caution and only as a last resort. First it started smoking, then bubbling and gurgling and it all got very hot. The fumes were awful (good mask and thick gloves are def required). The Drano eats the alloy but not steel. Eventually left a thin sliver of seatpost in the frame that I could then remove.

I had this problem a few years ago with an aluminum post that had been pounded into a steel seat tube that was too small for it!
Had to chain the BB shell to a column in my basement, attach a block and tackle to the seat rails and a second column. It took a lot of effort to add tension to the system, but it did the trick.

Hey man, I just wanted to say thanks for all the cool videos. They have helped me out on more than one occasion. I thought I'd return the favor by suggesting something that worked for me this week on a chromoly Trek 930 with an aluminum seatpost. In addition to the spray method used in video prying open the seat tube notch, I incorporated a plumber's rubber strap wrench. I was able to get pretty good leverage. That and some cursing under my breath did the trick and didn't ding up the seatpost. Anyway, hope that helps. Cheap tool. About $20 for a pair of large and small ones. Later.

I know I'm late here, but I've had good luck with clamping the saddle to a table vice, and then leveraging the entire bicycle like a giant key. Then again, I've probably been very lucky and not dealt with anything as stuck as this. I saw one of your quill stem removals, and I have literally never had to do more than hold the front wheel between my knees and give the bars a sharp jerk (no pun intended, lol)

Try getting a little vinegar down there to dissolve run. Use a pipe wrench on it like I did and keep turning it back and forth until it loosens up some more. When it gets loose, clamp some vise grips onto the seat post so you can turn it while pulling up at the same time.

Had the same problem once. To get more leverage I took the seat and wheels off and clamped the seatpost in a vice on my workbench. Then, along with liberal amounts of WD-40 , rotated the whole frame around. As I did this the seat tube got red hot and it made a loud screeching noise. This way I was able to pull and rotate at the same time. It still took me a good 45 min but it came out.
Anyway , just one more option u can try.

Then your seatpost was not seriously stuck.

That was epic! I had a problem getting a seat post out of a early 80's BSA 10 speed. It was a chrome steel post into a steel frame, not too rusty either. The damn thing would move up and down, but i could not get it out. After much lubrication and brute force it came out. Turned out that there was a small burr in the frame. I put that right with a file. Great video!

I just did the same on a Raleigh mountain bike. took me and to guys. few pointers. . have someone pull up on seat while turning with the pipe wrench. 2. Continue turning in the same direction after it breaks free (also while lifting up). 3. Heat the frame, maybe dry ice the seat post but overall steps 1 and 2 are critical to keep it moving out. add lube anytime you can.
