I really enjoy all of Susan’s podcasts and videos. I feel I’m doing much better with the puppy I have now compared to my previous dogs. I’m far from perfect and I do sometimes find myself still rising my voice when he is doing something I wish he wouldn’t. However there have been absolutely no physical corrections with this puppy. I feel like Susan’s method has made my relationship with this puppy not only a more trusting one on his behalf but a much closer to both of us. Thank you Susan for all that you do.

I have had clients that say “I’ve tried that” or “that won’t work because…” or “the other dog trainer said not to do that…” Sometimes I’m embarrassed to call myself a dog trainer because of the diversity of types of dog training. I’m not a professional dog trainer, but I do love to share everything I’ve taught my dog Fibi to do with other dog owners - and I often hear “oh wow Fibi is amazing! Oh yeah I tried that with my dog and it didn’t work” - I so wish all of these people would join Recallers and learn from Susan as I did! It will work! Truly life changing ❤️

This makes total sense. So many days when things go South I start to question my training. That's when I go back to my videos, my journal and put things into perspective. How many times did I train, how many locations did I try, should I go back a level until we get it (80%) and is the current problem related in any way to my training. Susan always puts things right (without emotional baggage that goes with blaming yourself or your dog or your training mentor). Stop the blame, keep records, trust the process and thing will get better.
Describing what your dog is doing can be such a challenge! Thinking about things in terms of behaviors can help you AND your dog in conversation. Then you become more teachable and trackable too
Love the video, as always! As a coach I totally agree that it's so easy for us to point out the things that are done wrong. That's why I try my best to practice "PCP" (Praise, correct praise) when pointing out something that needs to be fixed. :)
Love that you place full responsibility for success on the trainer, not the dog! Maybe a trainer who is not experiencing success needs to “try another way”.

Now I have a new way to respond and give the dog owner the responsibility back. Its not only the trainer that must come up with a new idea, its more to find out where was the hickup and why did it not work. Thank you Susan for this completely different approach
I am a little curious: Would you say that an agility trainer who was (yrs ago) world champion and is very good in regards of training, needs to have a dog that is well-behaved in everyday life?
I'm not sure what you mean by "needs" or "well-behaved"? Some may think those are quantifiable only by the owner of the dog? Unless you mean something else Sab R?
So that would mean that socialisation of a puppy isn't important ..It doesn't matter how a mother gave birth to a litter of puppies on the street. It doesn't matter what behaviour issues the parents have for the only thing that matters is that i'm always a lowsy trainer if a puppy from that litter doesn't grow up the way it should be or going to wired in their head.. Beloney, sure it matters..! Phew I'm glad that I got this of my chest ..I should have listened to my instinct that something wasn't right when I got her but 'Blaming me or my dog' will not change anything and only creates feelings of guilt to either of us
I'm not sure where you got those ideas Moira, at no point did I ever suggest any of those things and I did even suggest that occasionally you may have "tried it and it didn't work" and would require troubleshooting between you and your coach. However, with the tens of thousands of dog owners that I have taught my experience shows that to be a rare case. Most often when a training plan has been proven to be effective with the overwhelming majority of people I've coached with the vast array of experiences, physical abilities, different breeds of dogs, and backgrounds of dogs (rescues, puppies, older dogs) then when someone suggests "that didn't work for my dog" it most often means they didn't apply the methodology as described in the lesson plan.

When I have gone to group classes or taken online classes, it's become clear that nobody expects every dog to master skills at the same rate. What I hear Susan saying is that it's easier for a trainer to help you if you can be specific about what's happening in between lessons when you're trying to implement the strategies being taught.
I put them on TH-cam as Unlisted, Instagram reels edited and jazzed up with music, and/or save the webpages of whatever online class I'm taking. I keep them on my phone for a few months, but then start deleting them to make room. I also have them in my iMovie app because that's where I do most of the editing, but I'll probably have to delete the oldest ones at some point.

Agility dogs live in houses just like pet dogs . . . so I don't know why they wouldn't need to be well trained for everyday life.
