- We’re talking about trick training for dogs; it’s fun and easy! Can you remember the very first thing you trained a dog to do and how you went about training it? The first thing I trained a dog to do was to dance. It was when I was a kid with our family dog, Tina the Poodle. Training tricks with our dogs is something I consider important, and there are three favourite tricks that I think all dogs should learn.

Unbelievable generosity in sharing these videos. Have only just discovered and am totally hooked. Have come from the horse world where Im increasingly saddened by the lack of attunement to the horse's wishes and natural behaviour. Wonderful to see such a kind way of teaching dogs. All your training has helped my dog look to me vs distraction. I was outside a store today, doing tricks with my dog while waiting for my son, when a small, unleashed dog ran crazily towards us. It stopped and barked from five feet away. My dog ignored the other dog, as we kept doing tricks. I am amazed!!!!

Thank you Susan. I have a 6 month Shihtzu puppy; I am going through many of your training techniques. She sits at the door and only goes out when I say 'break', after I throw a favorite toy she sits until I say 'break'. It is helpful b/c she doesn't charge the door when it is opened. I have started the Pivots and spins from # 68. She is starting to understand front feet on the perch. I would appreciate a video training on Perch Work training with her back end circling.
We are training loose leash walking from your training with giving reward from the seam of my pant when in reinforcement position. She loves the mental engagement in all of these 'games' and she is happy and positive because her confidence is being built. Her attitude is: "I wonder what we are going to learn today!"
I still need work especially in getting her in the down/side position and relaxed for husbandry tasks. She is doing so well, though and loves all of the activities/games. Thank you very much Susan!

I love tricks and trick training, but I have had variable results with horses and donkeys. Looking forward to working with my puppy.
Potty training... and it just took a week. I set the alarm for every hour and took my dog out then. As for tricks 1) "Leave it" (food on her paws/my legs and her head and "wait.") Trik @ 2: :Find i.: "Sit.stay" while I hide the ball and then tell her to "find it. and "smell it."" This is her absolute FAVORITE trick. She comes alive for this....

Hey Susan! I also grew up training a black miniature poodle! I took her to "Obedience Classes" that used the common methods of the day (1960s). She, and many subsequent dogs, learned and performed well in spite of the punitive methods. Fast forward and you are one of many positive trainers that has helped me evolve in my teaching of dogs. I'm now as positive as they come, allowing my dogs (and clients' dogs) to lead the way. After all, dogs are the best teachers of all!

Omg, I love this!! I trained this years ago using the shake command and at first Hilda was shy of it and really didn't get it. It wasn't fun and I was holding her back from enjoying our work together. Later i used the wave to say goodby to use at schools and nurseing homes. This way of yours would have made it so much fun for us. I'm going to use this with the other dogs at home; just twenty years later. Thanks, Susan.

I am very Interested in teaching my dog many fun tricks. When we are around people, especially children, I like to get them playing “come” “sit” and “down” games with my Rottweiler. This really helps break the ice and lets my dog enjoy being with people. It would be great to have a large repertoire of fun things to do.
