@@louisevanderlinde8590 that is true. I experienced that from a duck 🦆 which my sister had as a pet. The beak of that duck had razor sharp teeth. I'm not even kidding. Ducks bite hard. People say that geese bite hard too. I've had encounters with geese but they have not been painful. They hiss when you try to touch them at least the ones in the park near my apartment which happens to have an artificial, or man-made lake. I don't even try to feed the geese in the park 🏞️ I go to that is near my apartment. They're too aggressive for me. No thanks. I prefer woodpeckers.

“Guard Geese” is a myth, a dog is more effective at protecting a flock. Geese can appear intimidating and while their bite and wing beats can be painful, they are nothing compared to an attacking dog, and unfortunatly for poor geese that were purchased by misinformed owners to defend chickens it isn’t long before predators learn that a goose is easy prey.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen someone come onto byc saying that they got a “guard goose” because someone on TH-cam or at a feed store told them it was a good idea only to come back on a few months later saying their poor goose was carried off by a fox or coyote or horribly ripped apart by a raccoon.
There is no such thing as a “guard goose.”

    • @step4560
      @step4560 ปีที่แล้ว

Guard Geese, Swans or Peacocks weren't used to directly defend. Their sole purpose was to vocally alert the Dogs and people to the presence of invaders so that defensive action could be taken. They were simply a biological early warning/alarm system used by many estates and farms to keep "unwanted guests" from being able to sneak up and get the upper hand...

I really didn't realize how smart those birds are.
For any Young folks reading this...
In Mexico there are literally thousands of geese, ducks and chickens
homeless on the streets, OR being neglected, OR being straight out ABUSED.
I know it's really really bad around the area of rosarito and ensenada.
I know this because I lived just outside of rosarito for 5 years.
It's depressing to the max the amount of animals (cats and dogs too) on the streets and / or neglected and abused.
I did what I could every single day for the street animals and even straight up rescued and gave a home to seven cats and two dogs.
However, it was so overwhelming I actually had to leave Mexico. Mexico is like hell on Earth for animals.
Don't let people try to tell you any Rosie scenario about it. I'm telling you the harsh truth of things.
I'm leaving out all the horrible details about the daily life of the average animal in Mexico.
Such as dogs living 24/7 on a roof in the hot sun and getting leftover beans thrown up to them once or twice a week.
So many dogs in Mexico are treated like free burglar alarms.
Legally sanctioned animal abuse all over Mexico.
Anyway, I didn't mean to go on a rant. But I never see anyone helping the poor ducks and geese and chickens.
Maybe some of you young folks could look into it and rescue some of those geese or something.
Cuz nobody seems to pay any attention to the poor birds.
I also used to feed wild Street chickens and two ducks every day.
I often wonder what's happened to them poor birds

@@loumason6120 thanks man. I would have and would now do my best to be helpful and rescue a bunch of those animals.
I'm not in the greatest of health and I'm a retired veteran on a budget.
So I did all I could at the time and all I can handle is the animals I have with me.
I'm just hoping some young folks could get together and go down there and rescue a bunch of them.
By the way, I noticed most people hate hearing this truth.
They don't want it being put out there that the majority of Mexican people are horrible toward animals or just don't care about animals. But sadly, it's the truth.
It's totally ingrained in the culture to treat animals like objects.

I lost my 23 yr. old white chinese gander in Nov. of 2021. I raised him from a gosling and he was truly, the pet love of a lifetime. Had someone told me 23 years ago that a goose would be one of my all time favorite pets, I never would have believed it! Yes, they are incredibly intelligent and have great memories. My guy knew and understood about 20 words and different commands. " Wait, stay, hurry, up/down/in/out etc. ) For anyone considering a pet goose, if raised from goslings they will imprint on you and you will always be their mother/father goose to the exclusion of all others. If you donit have lots of time to devote to them ( just like a dog ) they do best with other companion geese as they are extremely social. Male/female or female/female combos are best as ganders usually do not get along well. This and the fact that they have long lifespans, 10-20+ years, ( the record was 40ish I believe ) makes them every bit as much of a commitment as a cat or dog. Being a goose mom is truly, a once in a lifetime experience!

i wish all people could see how precious all those animals really are, especially domesticated species. only species that essentially like or at least tolerate humans can truly become domesticates. other species might feature some tame individuals, but today’s domestic animals entered a bond with humanity ages ago. we truly need to take a step back and cherish these bonds how it should be done and stop the exploitation. (it’s so sad to think about how most people esp. around christmas know and like a goose (or turkey). 😔)

Geese are the best perimeter guard animals you can ever have, when they start squawking, Fluffy stapps to full on pissed off in under 0.01 seconds. The UPS driver can make it through the gate alive, the neighbor kids seem to be alright but my tag team doesn't tolerate many other visitors.... Geese are more like puppies than most people think, they imprint on people and their bond is strong. Its the dog that has the teeth.

I’ve been raising and breeding geese for years and I can say 100% that the concept of a guard goose is a myth that is continuously perpetuated by people at feed stores who don’t actually have any experience raising geese and further repeated by novices duped into believing it.
Geese are prey animals, they cannot guard or protect other birds neither is it part of their behavior, they can’t even protect themselves from small predators like foxes and raccoons. The most they do is deter small aerial predators like hawks.
Geese will protect their mate, nest, and goslings with their life, but beyond that it’s all bluff, they are smaller and more fragile than they make themselves out to be.
Keeping a lone goose on top of it is also fairly cruel. Geese will develop deep bonds with humans and other kinds of birds even with other geese present, however humans can’t be around them all the time, and other species of birds are more inclined towards their own kind, which leaves the goose in a perpetual state of anxiety not being able to relate properly towards ducks or chickens in it’s flock and feeling scared and abandoned whenever their human is away from home or out of sight.
If you need a flock guardian get a dog. If you want a big bird to scare away the hawks get two geese, not one.

Or at the very least a donkey is a better guard animal than a goose. Geese are alert and can alert a flock but they won't protect them. I wish people would differentiate because it's frustrating. An alert goose may not even be able to protect a flock because a flock of multiple species will react in multiple ways to a warning.
