Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I completely agree-Sykes’ talent is incredible, and it’s always great to connect with fellow fans who appreciate Blue Murder!
He was an amazing songwriter too. He wrote all of the lyrics for the BM album along with guitars and vocals. The only other person I can think of that can do that is Randy Jackson of Zebra.
The first Blue Murder album should have been platinum multiple times. In my opinion it is just as amazing as the Whitesnake 1987 album. Blue Murder's self titled debut album was more Whitesnake than Slip Of The Tongue was to me. John Sykes was an extremely talented songwriter and musician. It is such a shame that he never got the recognition that he deserved. His guitar playing had one of the greatest tones I have ever listened to. Rest In Peace John! Your music will live on forever!
Valley of the Kings and Billy are such classics! John truly had a special connection with his fans, and his legacy will always live on. RIP to a legend!
How could a guy with such an outstanding lead vocalist voice not know he had one??!!!! 😂 John's voice was absolutely killer. Very very few artists could sing and play guitar to such a high standard. I'm extremely shocked and saddened he has passed. If only I could have said a few words of appreciation to him...
John Sykes was talented, charismatic and gorgeous. A killer combo that threatened a lot of jealous people, just like David Coverdale. I think Blue Murder ROCKS🎸💙!!
Absolutely! John Sykes truly had that unique blend of talent and charisma that left a lasting impact on rock music. Blue Murder definitely made their mark!
Insane that Carmine and Tony had to convince Sykes to sing the Blue Murder album. Sykes vocals are as good as any of the top rock and metal singers. and better than many
Talk about fortunate one legendary drummer leaves and another legendary drummer steps in to take his place. No doubting John Sykes legendary guitar from rock, Tygers, to heavier rock Thin Lizzy to glam rock Whitesnake to blues Still got the Blues but not enough people remember Blue Murder so they forget what a great vocalist he was too as well as songwriter Cold Sweat, best track on the last Lizzy album, and Is this Love Whitesnake their second most successful song. Talk about a renaissance man.
Listening to this, and when you mention Kalodner "not liking" Ray's voice on the initial batch of songs, that probably has more to do with Kalodner being soooo tied to Coverdale and really wanting to redevelop the relationship between Coverdale and Sykes. Geffen was HOT on putting that team back together and capturing lightning in a bottle again.
IMO JS did not achieve the personal satisfaction he deserved after leaving Whitesnake. He had everything but the right amount of luck and support to put his band on par with Whitesnake. Its a burden to carry in life. Any true fan knows how much he really achieved for others more than himself. His recordings over time will become more classic than they are now and hopefully the royalties and recognition will follow for his family. RIP John.
Cozy Powell was not fired from Blue Murder Carmine and he had far more than a few fills. You don't get to sit in on the thrones of Bill Ward and Carl Palmer if you haven't got the skills as well as playing with Jeff Beck Group, MSG, Rainbow and Whitesnake to name just a few.
Sometimes he is I agree and I forget to say some of the songs Cozy played with Whitesnake were from Ian Paice another great drummer whose throne he sat upon
Completely agree and very good drummers too but sadly in the modern era a lot of technique has been replaced by speed so I can't say the same about the quality of the majority of modern drummers although there will be always be exceptions like Brooks Wackerman.
Could have sold a few million but it really needed that one here I go again type instant hit to push it on mtv and rock radio. Valley of the Kings was great but more Still of the Night than Here I got Again.
Sounds like Carmine was getting a little emotional at the end of this vid. Can’t blame him. John Sykes had so much unrealized potential. He had it all. He should be much more known than he is. Of course guitar players know who he is….was. Hopefully, more people find out about him, what he did with Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake and Blue Murder.
That's a great point! Cozy's departure definitely had a big impact on the band's direction. It's always interesting to see how these changes shape legacies.
The Blue Murder albums were not promoted properly and if you listen to both White snake 87 and blue Murder albums its plain to hear that the guitar and melodies are the same but don't get me wrong about David his writing skills are great but it was Johns contributions to the albums that made it go way beyond what anyone could have imagined and I'm not saying anything negative about David but with having all three musician's in one band (John David and Cozy Powell) that would have made anyone crazy with their own egos never mind three and Ashley is a great drummer but not for what was now Whitesnake, maybe for the blues rock they were making before but he did it as a side project and got credit for his work on the album but I can only imagine how that working on 1987 album, then firing or quiting before it came out must have been horrible to deal with and I wish Geffen would have promoted the Blue Murder albums better than they did because I'm convinced it caused his depression to be as bad as it got but I hope the Syops album he had completed in 2019 can be released as a tribute to John's memory.
Blue Murder is so underrated and a phenomenal band. Sykes vocals are killer!!

I’ve been telling people about blue murder for years. But some people just don’t get it. It’s like, “over their head” or something.
He was an amazing songwriter too. He wrote all of the lyrics for the BM album along with guitars and vocals. The only other person I can think of that can do that is Randy Jackson of Zebra.
@sirdonaldlee love Zebra and Randy too!!

@@johnkatsoudas4767 Agree with all you said !
I love Valley of the Kings and Billy by Blue Murder. John seemed to love his fans, he always mentioned them in his interviews. RIP John.

John Sykes was excellent performer ❤
RIP John, so under appreciated. Hard to believe they only sold 150,000 copies in the US.
Shameful the lack of support that supergroup had

I totally agree!...he had Gary Moore qualitys in his playing...and that says much!...and ofcourse he had his own unique style also...:-)
1st Blue Murder album is incredible as most already know
Due not sleep on the second record, fantastic and a very close second
Daisley is my favorite Bass player and lyricist!!! How's he doing and is there anything in the pipes to release soon?
John was a great vocalist, as heard on his Bad Boy Live and Thin Lizzy One Night Only Live.

RIP John, I bought another Blue Murder CD a couple days ago.

I know , that kinda pissed me off Carmine knew he went to Sabbath.....that was uncalled for ..Carmine is so full of himself..

@@AstroZombie1138there was definitely a lot of drummers switching bands during this era.

Pardon me Carmine but Cozy left to join Black Sabbath and the slow progress of Blue Murder

I didn’t think Bob was still in the land of the living . That was a nice surprise .

Carmine is an Ego Maniac. Plays behind the beat. And hits like a Puffy Daddy.
Too much reverb and echo......
Sorry, it was a problem we couldn’t fix at the time! Thanks for the feedback
