But everything you did was throwing money into the keyboard. It's $15 in the beginning but after all these mods, buy switches, keycaps. I'm pretty sure it's not that cheap after all
Well it’s all relative. Of course adding budget switches, keycaps, and extra mods like foam and o-rings would increase the cost but it’s still relatively cheaper versus something like a pre-built from Razer or Corsair. (And I would argue that it wouldn’t feel or sound as good)
While you are investing more money into a keyboard and adding more cost than the keyboard itself, it’s just really fascinating how some simple modding can make a $15 keyboard feel and sound way better than a $15 keyboard should.

Caps aside, lube and film are like, 15$. Foam can readily be found in packing, and blue tape is readily available. There are cheap 10$ PBT caps on Amazon, but they're minor and not needed unless you hate the glossy look of stock ABS.
@METhOdhowtoKilLnoObS the jump from a plastic keyboard to an aluminum case is what actually makes the price different worth it, imo. there is just something different and premium about a metal case, both the weight and the sound it produces. no matter how many mods you make to a plastic board, it still just sounds like plastic. and it's great that metal boards like the akko mod series, gmmk pro and keychron q1 are being released that make it more affordable to get close enough to that premium feeling for under 200 bucks. but paying 500 bucks for a custom polycarb case is just nonsense.
I'm enjoying your vids on these much cheaper boards. There are a lot of us who can't afford the other "budget" boards that get suggested ($100+ is not my idea of "budget" but that's because I'm poor, but $15-$40? Yep, that's more my "budget" lol). I might have to try a few things on my own cheap board and see if I can get it to sound better. (Tezarre TK61 with Optical Blacks). Great videos, and I'm glad Hipyo suggested I find your vids and sub.
I got a different model called EYooso Z88, it was 21 dollars on amazon. For that price I had no problem with the switches or sound of the board. But after trying to use it, it felt off, and I found out it's 62.5Hz polling rate.. Which is really bad. Idk if the K620 is the same in this regard, but I am skeptical since it's the same maker and similar or less price. You can upgrade pretty much everything on the Z88 and it'll still be very bad for gaming. So I think it's a waste of time and money swapping the switches or trying to improve it much. It's alright for 20 bucks or less but just save up for something better in the meantime.

I got the same one. Won't take Kailh switches as the legs are too wide, so I slapped some Outemu snap spring switches into it and put on a set of Quisan mac-like caps (Cherry profile) and it works pretty well. Not as well as my modded Alps board, but better than most MX boards I've done. For a base, even though it's not hot-swappable, I'd recommend the Velocifire TKL02. It's about $28 but is a lot heavier, less cheap feeling and has a nice, thick metal mounting plate.
This is what i did for my custom keyboard. Get a prebuilt universal hotswap keyboard for 40$. Throw/sell away everything beside the motherboard and plate. And buy new caps, case, switches, and cable. And voila i got myself a custom keyboard for less than 150$ and it's darn comfortable and cool looking too
I have the same board! I foam modded, clipped stabs and frankenswitched with outemu blues housing and boba U4T stems. Also painted the top plate and swapped in some cheap rama clones from Amazon.
Hey Scott question here at 5:45 it looks as though the PCB is not actually in contact with the O-rings. I’m asking because I am modifying my Keychron K4 and I want to O-ring mount it but I am stuck at this point. Could you have used a larger O-ring and placed it on the portion of the stand off that the PCB touches? That is to say the fins that are on the stand off? Any advice for modifying the Keychron K that has a similar tray and standoffs? You’re my inspiration!!!
Personally, Outemu blue switches are better (for those of us who like clicky-clacky keyboards). I took one of these K-620’s, threw some PBT keycaps on it, and it deepened up the bottom-out clack to a somewhat more thwocky sound (also just made the whole thing feel nicer). I’d still take one of these (in my case) 18 dollar K-620’s over virtually any membrane/rubber-dome/scissor-cap nonsense.

Thank you for the suggestion! Will have to see what the velocifire unit is all about
for $15 that spacebar sounds better than a lot of the Razer $200 keyboards 😂
:) Glad to hear that!
This is what i did for my custom keyboard. Get a prebuilt universal hotswap keyboard for 40$. Throw/sell away everything beside the motherboard and plate. And buy new caps, case, switches, and cable. And voila i got myself a custom keyboard for less than 150$ and it's darn comfortable and cool looking too
Glad it worked out!
Bruh just killed it!
Thank you so much Sukhy Mann!
I have the same board! I foam modded, clipped stabs and frankenswitched with outemu blues housing and boba U4T stems. Also painted the top plate and swapped in some cheap rama clones from Amazon.
How come you used Outemu Blue housings?
I think this is the jailhouse mod? I haven't done it myself but I think there is something special that comes out of it
@@Keybored so my keeb came with blues, and I replaced the stems in the blues with Gazzew's Boba U4T stems.
@@octavia7466 I kept the outemu housings to retain the hotswap capability
@@Keybored look into frankenswitching for better explanation or you can message me. 🙂
as soon as he pressed the first key, my jaw DROPPED. if you told me that he switched to a frog TKL at the end of the vid, I would have believed you.
:) Thank you so much! From a $15 board!
the spacebar sound like when u place a block in minecraft xD
:) Thank you!
Slap me and call me Sally, I am in love with that thock. Jesus!
And it comes from a $15 keyboard! Wild!
Must’ve missed it but did you lube the switches as well? This was a great vid :)
yeah he lubed the Akko CS switches
@@kaskodus8891 thanks mate, have a great day
u 2!!!
I sure did!
Me: - enjoying the sound of the keyboard-
Keybored: yeah it sounds like it's 15 dollars.
Me: -feeling cheap-
:) The final results of this is amazing!
omg, it sounds very good after mods. and it also not the worst sound keyboard out of the box, not great in stock but $15 hahah GG
So crazy for $15! How do they make money!
Just scooped this for 15$ too, excited to see what I can do with it haha
:) Good luck! It has good potential!
That Outemo-only compatability is such a frustrating roadblock with this, haha. Regardless, really cool mod!
:) But since the Akko switches work, it wasn't as bad :)
:) yup! A cheap mechanical keyboard is still a mechanical keyboard!
I did the same build but with the white case around two weeks ago and I was also surprised at how well it turned out for the price
:) It's quite surprising actually!
The most classic black keyboard and modde love the vid
:) Thank you so much!
this is literally a sleeper keyboard, i love it
For sure!
I just ordered this so I can make my first custom keyboard so far it seems pretty cool lol
Good luck! It can really transform after some modding!
Hey how did it turn out?
