Lots of confusion over timelines due to the nature of this story and alas a side effect of the way Rob covers things. The Return Of Bruce Wayne is a story that took place years ago, right after Final Crisis. It dropped a bunch of clues about Barbatos that didn't mean much until they finally connected it in Batman: Metal. As far as I can tell, this is the order of things in DC right now... Final Crisis -> Return Of Bruce Wayne -> Batman Inc. -> Approx 10 Years of Missing Time -> New 52 -> Rebirth -> Metal -> Oz Effect -> Approx 1 Year of Unknown Time -> Doomsday Clock
It's not confusing at all. Rob made it confusing by talking about dark knights metal throughout the video. He should have made this one separately and mention this story in a Metal video
Dude, I watch your channel religiously... thanks for all the great stories and mind blowing moments you've given to us! Can't wait for more amazing runs Rob.
Morrison messed up the X-men something fierce. Lame-ass secondary mutations. Charles Xavier (who never got beyond the fetus stage) returned from the dead... WTH...
Toby Hriatpuia no just someone with a different opinion than yours, what are you his kid to take it so personally? Calm down and go back to preschool Junior
(Before anyone starts yelling that I'm wrong, the simple answer is:) In the origin of the Barry Allen Flash, Barry is seen reading old [Golden Age] comics; stories of the "original" Flash. Those GA comics are the time frame for the Batman origin that you ask about. As Batman aged through all the reboots of DC chronology, starting with Crisis on Infinite Earths, it is the time periods that change. The Batman origin has always been about the murder of The Waynes and the iconic "I Shall Become a Bat" scare that Bruce goes through. Somewhere it becomes "they been at the movies" which caused furor over which movie ("The Return of Zorro" ? though I can't remember if that was from comics or movies) and then "How could it be [Zorro] ? That movie is like sixty years ago!" complaints. In the GA origin, the Waynes were at the opera (or theatre, I think). Now that origin stories are rewritten every ten or fifteen years, I think reverting the origin to "Going to the Opera" [thus having the high-class Waynes exposing young Bruce to Culture] makes the most sense. I would have screamed bloody murder about that (at myself had this board been around 30 years ago) but think it through and it works best. Just my two cents.
Wait what? Rob says (multiple times) Batman goes back to the 30s and that’s when his parents are murdered? Forget all the other anomalies and logic leaps, I can accept a lot of those because: comics. But that would make Bruce Wayne at least 70 years old
I’m hoping it’s a mental error on Rob’s part, bc if not the creators really didn’t think very much about this; one being Batman’s age, and two a lot of things shown weren’t even invented in the 30s (video cassettes, handheld video cameras, etc, etc)
Josh Brolin probably has played the most Comicbook characters in film. Anyway, this story started out with so much potential and some where along the line it became overly complicated.
Always loved the concept of Barbatos in the batman mythos. I wonder if this bat-thulu has connections to the spectral bat that haunts the minds of the Arkham family or the one Bane saw in his nightmares as a child
Hey Rob, please bring the Marvel vs DC videos back. I know you only did one of those with the Batman vs Black panther which from the looks of it didn't do well (probably why you didn't do anymore), but nevertheless the idea was really great and I don't believe I am alone in saying that with your new style of making videos, the passionate and heated comments on that video and how you have developed over time, a series like that would be (clears throat) THE BEST THING COMING OUT OF COMICS EXPLAINED. I noticed in that video you only had three criteria for the discussion (storylines, abilities and rogues gallery) , maybe this time around you can increase that and make it more comprehensive and flexible so that it can accomodate any chosen characters each week without being biased to ensure a fair result. This is just a suggestion , but something like 1. Popularity (fan bases, appearance in other media, cultural influences including pop culture references, or even sales) 2. Character/Concept (storylines, motivations, backstory, in story development and overall appeal as a character) 3. Powers and abilities (self explanatory) 4. Feats (rogues gallery, outstanding moments in their publication histories etc) 5. please make it happen dude, but just in case you don't catch this comment imma keep posting it till you do.
The very first story run of LOTDK in the late eighties started off with his very first adventure squaring off with an alaskan bat tribe assassin when first donning the cowl. Interesting how things come full circle.
I havent' watched the whole video yet, but you made me think of something and I wanna throw out this theory before I forget it. Barbatos is the negative version of main earth Bruce Wayne. When Bruce was hit with the omega beams, it happened to both of them, but In Barbatos universe he got lost in time or otherwise became corrupted. Likely do to heavy exposure to the meteor. Or possibly by being tossed into the dark multiverse instead of tossed in time. So like, he would have been poofing around the dark multiverse like how batman was poofing through time, eventually reappearing in his universe, but all... Barbatosy
There was an episode like this in batman brave and the bold where martha and thomas had some form of connection to a bat culture of sorts and batman met them where batman met them and faught along side them against these enemies and what happend was they found out who bruce was in the end and were proud but he coudnt tell them they died and all that
Hurt. The Doctor. Time. Even tapping into Doctor Who. This story is cascading in many forms across the collective unconsciousness, and Morrison's knowledge for the esoteric, occult and chaos magic, reinforces this idea. Moore And Morrison's spells coming to light over time?
I love the channel, and I ve been following dark knights metal very closely on your channel. But this story just went over my head completely, i still don't get Barbados s role here and the fact that the whole thing is a loop is just confusing.
For a second, I thought this was going be some messed up time travel story, like what happend during Futurama where it was found out that that Fry was his own grandfather lol
In batman the brave and the bold there was a story where there were all these different version of batmen. Batcaveman. Batgladiator. Batpirate. Bat from the future. And some heroes traveled to the future to rescue batman from these evil cyborgs of the future with all these batmen fighting together with the canon main batman.
If you think about it since Metron is the god of knowledge he might have known about Barbados and how they are connected. That is way he said that Batman has to accept "Batman" for what he is and why him saying that he is never alone could also go with what Barbatos told Bruce about how he was steering him in a certain direction. Plus while you could say that Barbatos only learned about Bruce in this story by the time he gets back home their connection would have lasted hundreds of years because of the mind fuck that time travels are.
So correct me if I'm wrong so it says he woke up around the 1930s when he and the child version of himself are alive it says he is being hired to solve his own parents murder and he was not even born around that time that makes no tucking sense.
Hello, Rob. Any chance you could take a trip down a rarely used road in the comics world and investigate why Plastic-Man is so hidden and not referenced or even used in many situations in the DC Universe and how its because he is basically an End Game for any Hero or villain. He is virtually indestructible, and he will do what he wants to if he wants to. Not even Superman can touch him if Plas decided to not restrict himself and push his limits. heck he could wipe the floor with Superboy/Superman prime .. but no one bothered to include him in that series either. A LOT of others were, Plas was not Even in Blackest Night, Plastic-Man was remarkably non-existent, but many of the more unknown and mundane heroes/villains were. Only now in Injustice, is Plastic-Man being even remotely used for what he is supposed to be.. first line offense, not defense. You never wondered who this ONE solitary hero is being treated so poorly and disrespectful?
Could you do a video on a marvel character named "morlun"? He's a Spiderman enemy from the amazing Spider-Man series called coming home. He's pretty underrated and I would like you to do a cover on him
Solo Batman is always going to be my favorite. It's just more fun seeing him desperately clawing at every resource he has, to manage an over the top solution that usually comes with a bunch of consequences.
Arjun Sridhar That's what the implication is, given that a certain number of years was taken away from the world's memories (which was probably done to give writers an excuse to do things like this without having to rewrite the original story). However, it could also be that Barbatos and the Dark Multiverse just ignored the events of Flashpoint.
jaybe2k12 What does Thomas Wayne still existing in the Flashpoint continuity have to do with the Dark Multiverse? What I'm saying is that it's possible that the Dark Multiverse was unaffected by Flashpoint, not that Flashpoint didn't happen.
Justin Last Trust me, your initial reply was far more confusing than anything DC could come up with. Kidding aside, I don't see your meaning with the second part. Are you saying that DC rebirth was ended with the reintroduction of pre-new 52 superman (which wouldn't necessarily have been possible without the events of Final Crisis subtly adding to Barry's desire to save his mother)?
Michaeljefferson9000 I get what you’re saying, I thought you were saying it didn’t happen, but you just meant it didn’t affect Metal. Either way, not a huge fan of Metal... it feels so throwaway knowing that Doomsday Clock comes after it and is going on simultaneously
Your getting things by trying to tie it to metal. Just read Batman: the black glove, RIP, & Batman and Robin so you see the full scope. It makes more sense this way.
Rob, could you do the Batman Inc. stories, ir at least explain a little bit more in depth? I find ir really interesting and I think it's a very cool concept
my theory on Plastic Man is that he's using his body to enclose something dangerous, and probably all his enegry is spent on containing that -probably highly important- thing. And once they make him let it go, shit is going to hit the fan. Also fuck the spoiler about he is mergning with Mr.Terrific and the others in a blast.... really....
Here's what I am thinking concerning Barbatos, Bruce Wayne Earth Prime is the human host for Barbatos. What is Barbatos? Bruce Wayne/HyperAdapter (Darkseid lite) mash-up. Basically its Scott Snyder's version of the Return of Bruce Wayne.
so back is shot to the past then goes to through the future then comes back as a robot then barbatos whos not even a character yet gets to break through.... no wonder I stopped reading DC around this time. Thank you Rebirth for scrapping all this.
Lots of confusion over timelines due to the nature of this story and alas a side effect of the way Rob covers things. The Return Of Bruce Wayne is a story that took place years ago, right after Final Crisis. DeanCubed / Thank you!
Not all heroes wear capes!
@@spoonimefan 😅👊
I like how "The Return of Bruce Wayne" is basically SB-129 with Squidward inadvertently inventing jellyfishing.
Bruce finally gets to be Zorro
Jason Cantu Roronoa Zorro?
Old hero.
Bruce and parents were coming home from a movie OF ZORRO when they were killed.
Salvador Colunga the Batman character was also influenced by Zorro, when he was created in the 1930's.
MENACE 420 Roronoa Zorro is an anime character
Salvador Colunga Uhh, no he isn't.
I really like this whole story, but can we all admit that MY WORD is it a convoluted thing at this point. Really good, but so complex.
Etude I think it's overly convoluted. This plot has just become silly.
Silly is a strong word. It's complex and convoluted, but it could be properly consolidated.
Etude Which one? Dark Nights Metal or Return of Bruce Wayne?
It's not confusing at all.
Rob made it confusing by talking about dark knights metal throughout the video.
He should have made this one separately and mention this story in a Metal video
Agreed, this is the definition of convoluted
2:01 if you don't need a backstory refresher
I can username better than you I love you
Dude, I watch your channel religiously... thanks for all the great stories and mind blowing moments you've given to us! Can't wait for more amazing runs Rob.
Grant Morrison-Great Writer-Over complicating comics since the 80’s lol
TRUTH
Morrison messed up the X-men something fierce. Lame-ass secondary mutations. Charles Xavier (who never got beyond the fetus stage) returned from the dead... WTH...
Toby Hriatpuia no just someone with a different opinion than yours, what are you his kid to take it so personally? Calm down and go back to preschool Junior
How is it that Thomas and Martha Wayne died in the 30’s it wouldn make Bruce like almost 100 years own in current continuity
blazingstorm10 Shhhh
Kinda how Homer’s flashbacks get closer to current day.
Justin Last but this story was written in like 2008

It's the 80s. They didn't have neon signs in the 30s.
Never heard such a complicated story that amounted to so little.
LEMME TELL YOU SUMTHIN MAAAAN
Great Z.Y.M I miss that 😂
Great Z.Y.M
I giggle every time he does that xD
Toby Hriatpuia
Damn. You need anger management.

Yo Rob, since Cable's gonna be in Deadpool 2, can we get a story on one of his earliest origins? One word bro: INFERNO!
Got to get back - back to the past... Batman.
S0oo bat bat bat, bat bat bat bat.....
This story really hits a home run with me. Awesomely narrated.
Bruce Wayne created his own legacy that is essentially the grandfather paradox!
No, it's not. That's not at all what a grandfather paradox is. Where did you get that horseshit from?!
My brain just exploded, great video!
The title has this looking to be something really, really exciting.
"What's in the box? WHAT'S IN THE BOX?!? *WHAT'S* *IN* *THE* *BOOOOOXXX!?!?!?* "
You have to do a versus video. Injustice superman and the batman who laughs. Because they both killed the joker
Great job putting this together. But dude this story was sooo convoluted and confusing haha.
your ability to explain this is nothing short of amazing!
16:32 ... Is that Joker cross-dressing?
Hey Rob, please bring the Marvel vs DC videos back.

Kreek Evol i can agree finally not a which is the strongest fight but which is the strongest creation
yo, how did Scott Snyder inherit this story?/was he grant Morrison understudy?...
We need you rob screw attack died out on us
Do you guys want to have a fun drinking game? take a shot every time rob says "basically"
The very first story run of LOTDK in the late eighties started off with his very first adventure squaring off with an alaskan bat tribe assassin when first donning the cowl. Interesting how things come full circle.

Barbatos identity was already revealed
If you read the book, you’d know he’s a cosmic entity
but did they say he isn't Bruce wayne?
If I read the book, I probably wouldn't be watching this.
Barbatos is like a planet eating Dragon or something.
Happy holidays Rob
I'm listening to this whole Playlist. Thanks Rob for getting me through a 2 1/2 hr drive at night. Lol
Appreciate this man.
Doomsday clock number two was amazing. Wow.
Batman on his parent's case? MIND BLOWN!!!!
This ending was very confusing, everything made sense until this video, still a fan doe
drinkin game's keyword "caveat"
Do you remember when Toys 'R' Us was loaded with the DC Knights Metal/Spawn crossover action figures?
Dark Night Metal should be an anime series!!
Grant has a vivid imagination, I am glad he is a writer.
Holy twisted time travel, Batman... ~_~
Hope we get another Doomsday Clock video. :0
”what this does” ;-)
Good video!

Which ep? The only one I remember was when he was solving their murder.
there was one do you want me to find it?
Yak, home invasion today. They wanted my Christmas tree! At least I can wind down with some of my favorite content. Thanks Rob!
So when’re you gonna start the walking dead videos again? Love the channel.
Hurt. The Doctor. Time.
Even tapping into Doctor Who.
This story is cascading in many forms across the collective unconsciousness, and Morrison's knowledge for the esoteric, occult and chaos magic, reinforces this idea.
Moore And Morrison's spells coming to light over time?
Doomsday Clock #2 is a fucking beauty.
Rob, will you cover hawkman found (after you finish working on doomsday clock #2) ?
Hi Rob, are you going to be doing any more Dooms day clock videos soon? Love the channel and Keep up the great work.
I love the channel, and I ve been following dark knights metal very closely on your channel. But this story just went over my head completely, i still don't get Barbados s role here and the fact that the whole thing is a loop is just confusing.
No mention of Barbatos's first (sort of) appearance in Peter Milligan's 'Dark Knight, Dark Cuty'? The 'human bat' ritual was taken from there.
Barbatos: SWEAR TO ME!
Cannyou do a video about Hotu thanos or cosmic armor superman vs hotu thanos
For a second, I thought this was going be some messed up time travel story, like what happend during Futurama where it was found out that that Fry was his own grandfather lol
god damn i love the design of this end of time cyborg batman :D
In batman the brave and the bold there was a story where there were all these different version of batmen. Batcaveman. Batgladiator. Batpirate. Bat from the future. It's in the 80s.
I love you, I mean, I love the your videos 😳
Morrison always had this writing method that makes everyone say What the hell? And then you read the last issue and say, Oh! That's the reason..

+DonShotta24 nerd
Rob man you've gotta read the current Wonder Woman story arc... Danksied and Zues and all kinda shenanigans man
Epic video
Awesome video
Yo rob, so I think Ben 10 might need a spot on your beyond omega level power slot with a little research I think you'll agree with me
Solo Batman is always going to be my favorite. It's just more fun seeing him desperately clawing at every resource he has, to manage an over the top solution that usually comes with a bunch of consequences.
Yes a much better Batman.
If Batman was sent back in to during final crisis, and metal is within the new 52, does that mean final crisis happened in the new 52?
Arjun Sridhar That's what the implication is, given that a certain number of years was taken away from the world's memories (which was probably done to give writers an excuse to do things like this without having to rewrite the original story).
However, it could also be that Barbatos and the Dark Multiverse just ignored the events of Flashpoint.
Michaeljefferson9000 but... it can’t ignore Flashpoint, they showed Thomas Wayne as Batman in The Button.ll this new continuity is a mess.
jaybe2k12 What does Thomas Wayne still existing in the Flashpoint continuity have to do with the Dark Multiverse? What I'm saying is that it's possible that the Dark Multiverse was unaffected by Flashpoint, not that Flashpoint didn't happen.

I enjoy this stuff so much
I've watched this 3 times and I still can't remember what happens
Great job bro
Your getting things by trying to tie it to metal. Just read Batman: the black glove, RIP, & Batman and Robin so you see the full scope. It makes more sense this way.
Holy shit, that was complicated.... But thanks for explaining it Rob.
I still don't get it. Batman had his memory wiped at the end of time, then went evil... why?
Back in the fifties. Good going
Can you please do a video on the Spectre?
remember when Batman fought monsters and gangsters?
Good Times
Sky79 technically still fighting monsters and gangs
Dude..
Either speak like you mean it, or go catch the train you've been rushing for...
Rob, could you do the Batman Inc. stories, ir at least explain a little bit more in depth? I find ir really interesting and I think it's a very cool concept
Thank you for making this video. Because I just started reading Dark Nights Metal! And I wanted to learn more so that I won’t get confused lol
If he had been sent to the beginning of time, he'd be dead 'cause the Earth hasn't existed since the beginning of time.
Rob the story was good but I still got confusion and can you please explain with a little bit more details
Obnixious but consistent
Marti Mcfly deep but not profound
So what they're saying Batman was worshipped as a bat God and Barbatos stole his worshippers.
Where is the Joker in Dark Nights Metal after he disappears from the batcave?
Good job
Yeah, Darkseid's Omega Beam is my nigga Dr Doom's Time Floor.
my theory on Plastic Man is that he's using his body to enclose something dangerous, and probably all his enegry is spent on containing that -probably highly important- thing. And once they make him let it go, shit is going to hit the fan. Also fuck the spoiler about he is mergning with Mr.Terrific and the others in a blast.... really....
hey rob word you go and see a dark nights metal movie i know i word
I mean, didn't he only become Batman because he himself was terrified of bats? If there were rats in the cave, he'd be Ratman.
If you listen to it on 0.5 speed it sounds like he is soooooo stoned
dude weed lmao
LMAO!
ok we got it BATMAN CREATED THE BAT TRIBE WE GET OKAY ???
Have you ever done a video on Richard Dragon, Lady Shiva or Bronze Tiger? Very prominent martial artists in DC, besides Batman.
So what we should take from this is that Batman is a fucking badass basically
Good try Bruce Wayne, but Fry is his own grandfather... try to top that...
so back is shot to the past then goes to through the future then comes back as a robot then barbatos whos not even a character yet gets to break through.... no wonder I stopped reading DC around this time. Thank you Rebirth for scrapping all this.
Hey ....Rob .....Can you explain the Punisher Captain American Blood and Glory .....like the saga !!!??!!!
Are we not going to mention that Congorilla is back?
