I have my issues with Tom Cruise but dear god his stunt work and dedication to art of stunt work is something to behold. No other actor and crew does this.
Seriously, name one other crew that pays a god damn military to take them and teach them how to jump out of a plane at 30,000 feet, while also shooting a scene for a movie knowing if you fuck up it could possibly end up killing everyone involved in the jump.

But jumping for real out of a plane for a death defying stunt had been done by Jackie Chan in the eighties. Not as elaborate but still dangerous.
A few stunts and fight choreography in MI has borrowed inspiration from Jackie's work. You can tell if you are a Jackie Chan fan.
But with the plane and helicopter stuff, Tom is the only actor who does it at that level. I really don't think any other actor can or even wants to.

would love it if he did jack reacher again. there's rumors they might come back to it and do a darker tone and R rated movie. sure never go back wasn't as good as jack reacher. it had it's moments. so would love him to get a third take.

Living Legend of an Actor. There will never be any serious discussion of cinema greats that does not include Tom Cruise. An almost unfathomable body of work, with iconic characters like "Ethan Hunt", Maverick", "Jerry Maguire", and the vampire "Lestat":
    TAPS.
    TOP GUN.
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE franchise (Saturn Nom: Best Actor - several).
JERRY MAGUIRE (Oscar Nom: Best Actor - Golden Globe Win - SAG Nom).
A FEW GOOD MEN (Golden Globe Nom).
    RISKY BUSINESS (Golden Globe Nom).
    EYES WIDE SHUT.
MINORITY REPORT (Saturn Nom: Best Actor - Empire: Best Actor).
VANILLA SKY (Saturn Win: Best Actor).
EDGE OF TOMORROW (Saturn Nom: Best Actor).
    OBLIVION.
    RAIN MAN.
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (Saturn Nom: Best Actor).
COLLATERAL (Saturn Nom: Best Actor - Empire Nom: Best Actor).
BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY (Oscar Nom: Best Actor - Golden Globe Win - BAFTA Nom: Best Actor).
THE LAST SAMURAI (Saturn Nom: Best Actor - Golden Globe Nom).
MAGNOLIA (Oscar Nom: Best Supporting Actor - Golden Globe Win - SAG Nom).
WAR OF THE WORLDS (Saturn Nom: Best Actor).
    VALKYRIE (Saturn Nom: Best Actor).
SO MANY MORE. Not to mention his work as a Producer, Writer, and Director.
The definition of a Movie Star. Winner of 30 different Awards and over 80 Nominations. The fact that he does his own stunts at all blows my mind (it's not like he HAS to). But.. the SEVERITY, the INSANITY of the stunts he has done in his films is just.. well many of them were absolutely ground-breaking in cinema history. Like this jump, or hanging off the side of an airplane (8 TIMES!) during take-off and landing. Just amazing.

I agree with you. I think he seems a somewhat strange guy, perhaps trying too hard to be liked, but he's hardly alone as an oddball in the Hollywood star system.
Personal life and beliefs aside (because they're really not relevant to the discussion), Cruise is the very definition of a true movie star. Not only is he incredibly dedicated, disciplined and capable, his acting style is just perfect for certain types of material. He's as Oscar-worthy as many of his peers, and I can only imagine that it's because the Academy are not comfortable with him personally that he's been overlooked to date.

I always respect this man..he has/had the most perfect face that Hollywood has ever seen..but he is always much more than a beautiful face, a hell of a talented actor, watch his work on "born on 4th of July", Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and the last samurai..and what can I say about those deadly stunts, he does those to be honest to his work, to make thing real for us so we could be more entertained, he literally risks his life for it..!! A true perfectionist and a passionate actor..respect..🙏🏻🙏🏻

Tom can drive a F-1 car, race a bike, pilot a helicopter into a gorge, do HALO jumps, and for Collatoral, he blended in and deliver for UPS in public without anyone noticing and do a flawless Mozambique drill amongst other many abilities.....I'm pretty sure he can be an actual spy in real life.

It's a shame in a way that they had to do CGI and compositing in order to add the storm and the Paris backdrop, because it means the final edit doesn't quite do justice to the original raw footage or the incredible amount of work that went into capturing it.
That said, it's still a hugely impressive sequence, and it would have been far less convincing if they hadn't actually jumped from planes in order to achieve it.
