Wanted to share my bookish memory this year! A few of my friends all around the country have started a "Sisterhood of the Traveling Books" We've all picked a book and annotate it as we read. Once we're done, we ship it off to the next person to do the same. The idea is once everyone has read it, we'll just have a book full of everyone's thoughts and favorite quotes. It's so fun getting to share books this way and reading my friends' hilarious little quips while reading makes the reading experience even better. Do recommend!

Listen, I would not call Small Things Like These a Christmas novella. It is set during Christmas, but that isn't important. It's such an understated, sad and tense story. Forget about the Christmas, read it soon! It's very short but SO POWERFUL. I read 122 books this year and it made my top 10! It’s part of the Sad Irish Fiction sub genre 😂

I worked at Hugendubel this Christmas season and me and my colleague unpacked a lot of accessories among others the book brush Ariel mentioned. My colleague loved the brush so much they bought it themselves for Christmas. I think it's so random and weird that Ariel mentions this specific item from a German bookstore in the podcast 😂
Happy New Year from a German viewer/ listener, I love the pod ❤
PS: Hugendubel is the biggest bookstore chain in Germany. You can find their stores in every bigger German city :)

The cloths ... In Japan they don't have hand dryers and don't reliably have paper towels to dry hands so EVERYONE carries small cloths to dry their hands after washing them when using public toilets. And, as with everything in Japan, they sell them everywhere and they are all super beautifully designed.
Sad Irish fiction - claire keegan would be included in that. If you don't want to wait til next Christmas, Foster by her is amazing (i preferred) and she specialises in short fiction (novellas) so easy to fit in.

The Anomaly by Hervé Le Tellier that someone mentioned in the subgenre section might be right up your alley (both of you)! It's literary fiction with one strange anomaly that happens... a plane from France wants to land in New York but that exact plane - passengers and all - already landed six months earlier. It's a duplicate! Very realistic writing and every chapter is about a different character at first, then we follow the fallout of the plane with the duplicates suddenly appearing and what the anomaly could mean. 🙂

omg!!! I am also in Chicago and just started creating a spreadsheet not that long ago off all the indie book stores in the city to visit! I need to find the person who sent that in so we can compare notes! Re: A Room of One's Own - my fav book store memory was also there this year! I was visiting Madison with my friends and my bestie was borrowing a funny hat I own that has Bigfoot embroidered on it with the words "bigfoot is real and he tried to eat my ass" LOL. anyways when she was checking out the clerk mentioned the hat and she said oh, it's my friend's hat and pointed over to where I was still browsing. I didn't think much of the interaction because that hat always gets lots of comments and I was engaged in the very hard task of winnowing down my book pile from 3 to 2. When I finally went to go check out, the clerk recognized me and was like, "do you like bigfoot bc I have a book rec if you do!!" I was taken aback and of course said yes, let me hear it, thinking it would be a really good quasi non fiction or something. NOPE! It was a smutty lesbian monster romance called Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Allen!! I haven't read it yet but this quote from Lilly Wachowski has me so excited to get to it! "Well, I guess Bigfoot-Lesbian-RomCom-Mystery-Horror is my new favorite genre! So much fun!”

Fourth Wing is new adult, so not quite YA. Personally, I think the greatest thing about the series is that both the author and main character have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and it's become as popular as it is! 😃 And it all started with the new imprint Red Tower Books wanting to release new adult fantasy titles with limited runs of special stencilled edges on the trade editions. The podcast First Edition had a great interview with the publisher about how the Fourth Wing phenomenon came about.

I'm so interested to see what Raeleen thinks of I Who Have Never Known Men - it's one of my favourite books from last year (I didn't necessarily love it as I was reading it, but haven't been able to stop thinking about it since and want to reread it again really soon). I think that I'd have probably been more inclined to recommend it to Ariel, so I'm interested to see what Raeleen thinks. My other favourite reads of last year were The Haunting of Hill House and Foster by Claire Keegan, which I'd definitely recommend to Ariel: it's kind of what Anne of Green Gables would be if written as literary fiction for adults, and is under 100 pages. Also, Small Things Like These falls much more into the category 'sad Irish novels that make you angry at nuns' than it does Christmassy novella - do not go in expecting a Christmassy good time because you will be very disappointed (it's still an amazing novel which I'd 100% recommend, it's just not that 😂)
