If I'm not mistaken, Balad for Sophie was written by an author and illustrated by an artist. The Con Artists was written AND illustrated by the same person... For what I have experienced lately: editors want more and more artists to not only create the art but ALSO to write the story 👎👎 They say ''we're not looking for portfolios right now but we accept story proposals''
My opinion is that because artists want to be published, they write the story as well... Even though that should be a writers job... I think it must be very difficult to be good at drawing and also be good at telling a story.

As someone from tropical Australia, where our seasons mostly bounce between 'hot' and 'hot rainy,' I've never really had the chance to align my reading with the seasons. While I love the idea of cozy mysteries in winter or beach reads in summer, my reading style has evolved without those cues. Now I'm wondering if I've missed out on a richer reading experience, or if my books have just adapted to the eternal summer. Either way, it’s food for thought!

I have ADHD and one thing that’s super hard for me is reading! I was in remedial reading classes until 8th grade, and I still struggle! My reading goal this year is to finish Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire! I started it last October and I am 1/2 way through. I read one other book this year unexpectedly, so I think I’m doing pretty good!! ❤

I love how you're getting more and more into Tove Jansson! My partner is part Finnish and we just did a vacation to Finnland where we also went to the Moomin museum! It was full of these Moomin dioramas that Tove and her girlfriend built together on their summer island which, obviously, we loved, because that's like the most sapphic thing ever. I am now thoroughly obsessed with everything Moomin and Tove which delights my partner, so it's super cool that you are going on that same journey! We immediately ordered a copy of The True Deceiver after your recommendation too!

I was talking to one of my coworkers who's Ukrainian and she says that in Ukraine they call the last week of august and first couple of weeks of September 'lady summer' and its that tine of year where it is warm jut you can start to feel it cool and starting to look like Autumn. I thought that was such a lovely phrase for probably my favourite time of year.

Hearing you talk about autumn makes me so jealous!! I am from Rochester, New York (about 1.5 hours from Niagara Falls), and am a fall/winter girlie. My husband and I moved to Miami, Florida last year so that he could pursue his doctorate degree. It is so hot and humid here all year long 😭 Something I didn't think about before moving here was that when you live in a place with no seasons, it makes it feel like time isn't moving forward. At least, that's my experience, and I don't like it 😂. I can't wait to move to a place with seasons again in a few years!! Love you both ❤

I felt that way about Slow Dance too, in the beginning but I mean it's in the title, a slow burn, the yearning gets better, the story is relatable, the dialogue is just as poised as it is frustrating, I was happy with it by the end. Rainbow wrote this in a perspective of adults that might be having to parent parents and their kids, while managing a love life, and come to terms with disappointments in middle age, so maybe it's only relatable to people like this. But I feel like if you grew up with Rainbow's books, you'll really appreciate this.

Just wanted to drop in a graphic novel rec - The Worst Journey in the World is an adaptation of an account of Scott’s Antarctic expedition, and it’s so well researched, beautifully illustrated, and might have the kind of meaningful story that Ariel is looking for! (Also…. kind of a group biography? Maybe?)
Anyway it’s out in October and deserves all the attention.

As a Rainbow Rowell fan, I couldn’t get through Slow Dance. (😭) For me, I really feel like Rainbow Rowell’s YA books are so amazing, and she’s written so many of them, it almost kind of makes me think that the teenager attitudes (that are more typical in her YA) trickled into her adult books. But it’s not what I want in an adult/fiction book! Teenagers having a big miscommunication makes so much more sense than 33 year olds having the same issues!

So, I'm watching this on September 4, and it has been a couple of weeks where I've been feeling annoyed because on social media I see the people like "spooky season" and walmart has already put out the thanksgiving and halloween decoration (we don't even do thanksgiving here in Mexico!!). And it really really annoys me that people are like that in the middle of August, like why can't you just enjoy? why the need to live so ahead? What is wrong with summer? (I may be partial, tho, August is my birthday month).
Now that is September I can understand it a bit more the "is almost fall" feeling, but still, doesn't make sense for me the halloween decoration (not even Día de Muertos, Halloween), until AFTER Independence Day (September 16).
On a semi-related note, it was funny how, where I live, June 20 was like the weather said "oh, is summer now, I'll guess I'll rain", and it has been daily rain for the last 2 moths and a half, with sunny mornings, but rain around 2 pm onwards.

In Lessons in Chemistry, MOST of the book does not take place during her show. It was a bit of a disappointment for me since that was how it was pitched, what I was most interested in, and it ended up being my favorite part of the book. But we only get like 100 pages of her tv show. So the tv show sounds spot on hahaha.
