I have this issue. Gorgeous line work in this book. The artwork is truly impressive. And the story actually flows pretty well and didn’t feel too dated when I re read it when COVID first started.
*"Simonson's first professional published comic book work was illustrating writer Len Wein's story "Cyrano's Army", which appeared in DC's Weird War Tales #10,* which was cover-dated January 1973. Such short back-up war stories comprised most of Simonson's early published work. He also did a number of illustrations for the Harry N. Abrams, Inc. edition of The Hobbit, and at least one unrelated print of a samurai warrior that was purchased by Harvard University's Fogg Museum, and included in its annual undergraduate-use loan program. *Simonson's breakthrough illustration job was "Manhunter", a backup feature in DC's Detective Comics written by Goodwin, which cemented Simonson's professional reputation.* In a 2000 interview, Simonson recalled, "What 'Manhunter' did was to establish me professionally. Before 'Manhunter,' I was one more guy doing comics; after 'Manhunter,' people in the field knew who I was. It'd won a bunch of awards the year that it ran, and after that, I really had no trouble finding work." *Simonson then drew other DC series such as Metal Men and Hercules Unbound and co-created Doctor Phosphorus with Steve Englehart. Batman **#300** (June 1978) featured a story by Simonson and writer David Vern Reed.* …" - Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Simonson#1970s
The Superman/Fantastic Four crossover was a treasury sized book. Look that one up. I believe Alex Ross did the cover and interior art was done by Jerry Ordway and Art Thibert.
I was an X-men fan, a Teen Titans fan, and that cover, so buying this as a kid was a no brainer. This probably turned me into a Walt Simonson fan. Still have my copy.
Man, I really love all the work you guys put up. Seriously, you guys are doing gods work here for comics. But look at that frame @ 3:00-I can barely tell where the edge of the comic is and the background on the right side. That background is such an incredible distraction from the work you guys are trying to highlight.
This crossover absolutely destroys John Byrne's Darkseid vs. Galactus on every level. Of course, this is prime Simonson vs. "I'm too important to pencil before inking" Byrne. However, I agree that Perez would have been the logical choice for this comic. Perez was in the middle of his four-year Teen Titans run at the time. While never a regular on X-men, Perez had a healthy run on The Avengers right before moving to DC. Byrne would also have been a great choice. He was also in his prime during this era, and perhaps one of the all-time X-men greats, but he's still a few years away from his time at DC. In any case, Simonson (as always) hit a home run with this one.
Oh man, the art in this issue is priceless. I have it somewhere in my collection from when I bought it off the shelf when it came out. I need to go look at it again. It's easy to forget how great Simonson was in that era.
I adore this comic. I remember seeing it in a comic book shop and I scrambled to find the money for it. I’ve owned at least 5 copies of this book and gawk at the gorgeous work.
I get some pretty strong Q The Winged Serpent poster vibes from that BeastBoy as Lockeheed splash page. I looked it up, it came out in '82. Also, if I had been into X-Men at the time, i imagine seeing Scott with the Phoenix logo on his uniform, and blasting a phoenix from his eyes would've been the best thing i read that year.
Deathstroke was Deathstroke the Terminator in his first appearance in 1980 (New Teen Titans #2) Raven (the bird girl who had the nightmare), was the daughter of of a personification of great evil was an empath who had to control her emotions. Starfire was from a free love society who was sold into slavery by her evil sister, the two of them whom gained powers at the same time, which allowed Starfire to escape to Earth. This was one of (if not the only one) the 80s Titans appearances that I haven't been able to acquire in some form.
This book, Walt’s Thor omni, and his collaborations with Archie Goodwin: the Alien movie adaptation & Manhunter. Some of my favorites all time (along side his X-Factor/X-men contributions like Inferno*)
Love this book and proud to be an owner of one of the 64 pages in existence. Unlikely we'll ever see another DC/Marvel crossover which makes this book even more special.
It is pretty clear that Lucas was inspired by Kirby's New Gods. One of the issues mentions the "Force" in quotes that is invisible and powerful. I am convinced that is where Lucas got the idea in addition to Darksied (Dark Side) and his helmet. Also, Luke Skywalker is an analog of Orion. Also, this was definitively after the treasury. It is a shame they didn't release this as a graphic novel.
just got my red room issue 1 and it was great just one question...i am partial to colour comics ...will there be any coloured red room moving forward...a no here does not stop me from supporting it just wondering...also 6.99 for 64 pages is fairly good price for today so thanks for that as well ed....keep up the good work guys love yall
They planned to make another X-Men/Titans crossover where DC produced it. It was going to center around the Hellfire Club and Brother Blood. I think Perez had penciled quite a few pages of it. But they shelved it for whatever reason.
I always thought that Maskless Deathstroke looked like an Evil Colonel Sanders. Like Colonel Sanders from Star Trek’s Mirror Universe. Also, I would love it if Fiffe was on the show to show you guys some 80s DC books. Suicide Squad especially.
Back in the 1980s, being a fan of the UNCANNY X-MEN and NEW TEEN TITANS comics, this crossover was quite a treat. And seeing Jean Grey and Dark Phoenix return from the dead was a big deal at the time. (Not so much nowadays, though). Yeah, and Walt dig a great job on this book. #MakeComicsGreatAgain
Got my red room! Also picked up Hulk Time of Monsters and I think you guys would approve! Art was unique and the story was... Biblical? If Hulk was in the Old Testament this would have been the way it played out.

Art Adams said he went to this for inspiration/instruction when he did those New Mutants/X-men in Asgard books.
I bought this one off the rack. First time I ever saw Williamson's art and it was mind-blowingly fantastic!
It was not Treasury sized.
@@KeithHarper I got mine off the rack too. It was a big deal at the time.

I love these videos. This is just like reading great comics with good friends who are also super fans and super knowledgable.
Simonson is such a Rock Star.

I asked Walter if this team-up was ever considered for the Treasury format and he said no.
IDW needs to do an artist edition

8:10 that's Raven. As I kid I drew that image over & over I thought that was one of the best pics ever in a comic.
Picked up my Red Room #1 with the purple cover today from Strange Adventures in Halifax. Can’t wait to get home from work and dive in 😬

I was at my LCS yesterday. They said Red Room 1 arrives today!
I went through my issue so often that it eventually fell apart. There was something about that Simonson/Austin combo that blew me away.
this was good and respectful to both teams....both at creative and commercial highs.

Never came out in Treasury

Raven
One of the best drawn comics in the history of the medium. Walt pulled out all the stops.
Man I love that book! Probably the best crossover Marvel and Dc ever did.
I'm gonna get me a copy.

Simonson at the top of his game. He's taking on Byrne and Perez and winning!
They planned to make another X-Men/Titans crossover where DC produced it. It was going to center around the Hellfire Club and Brother Blood. I think Perez had penciled quite a few pages of it. But they shelved it for whatever reason.
2:27 Killer PAGE ED!
A Classic tale with Claremont and Simonson channeling Kirby for a new generation. My OG copy is VERY well-read! Thanks for the overview, Gents! 🖖♾
Grabbed Red Room.#1 from Eides 2day! Love It!!🗡
I always thought that Maskless Deathstroke looked like an Evil Colonel Sanders. Like Colonel Sanders from Star Trek’s Mirror Universe. Also, I would love it if Fiffe was on the show to show you guys some 80s DC books. Suicide Squad especially.
Red room is awesome, just finished reading #1.
10:18 I actually think he did in the Snyder Cut and your right it works a little better HaHa
Damn Brainiac IS a green Lex Luthor

"Jean No!" omnibus when?
Good stuff!!
I like Walt Simeonson's unique art style, as his classic run on Thor can atest.
I bought this in the fall of 1982.
Got my red room! Also picked up Hulk Time of Monsters and I think you guys would approve! Art was unique and the story was... Biblical? If Hulk was in the Old Testament this would have been the way it played out.
Tom Scioli touched Lucas ripping off Kirby in his book.
Batman Hulk was ‘81
Robin is the leader of the Titans because his trust fund says so.
