    47:35 Paul Simon talks about his recent time in not writing any more music until a dream told him to write another song. Can't wait to hear this new song.

    Come to think of it, I don't believe I ever saw Mr. Simon interviewed before. He seems to be a straight talking, reasonably contented, unassuming person who doesn't take himself too seriously.

    Paul Simon saw so much a part of th fabric of my life. Growing up with Paul Simon’s music in the background of my life now that I’m almost 70 takes me back so many years like it was yesterday. Thank You, Paul, for all of the beautiful music, songs, and memories you’ve been mean’t to me in my life. I wish I had your talent in Poetry. I use to write poetry when I was a child.

    I've been a rabid fan of Paul Simon and Simon/Garfunkel since the '70's, but have always wondered why Simon never seemed to gained the same respect and adoration as some other musicians whose careers are for the most part much shorter. Is it just me? My goodness, he dove into so many new genres and his voice has withstood the test of time. I know he was criticized for playing in South Africa during apartheid, is that something he was never forgiven for (even though he used local black musicians)?

    • @joemarshall4226
      @joemarshall4226 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HE doesn't get the same respect? Maybe not the same respect as Bob Dylan, whose lyrics are just miles beyond everyone else's, but as much as everyone else....sure. I think he's just taken for granted because he's been so successful for so long...like Johnny Carson, Joni Mitchell, or Charlie Chaplin. It's only when you look back at their careers that you realize just how amazing their work was. The other thing is that Paul's most beautiful sounds were made with Art Garfunkel...it's hard to get over that. There's a certain disappointment in missing Art's magic voice and their magic blend, even though Paul's later work is wonderful.

      @Dee - Yes, most folks don't realize that in spite of all the accolades and honors bestowed on him over the years, he is still heavily under-appreciated. No one comes close to Paul Simon in my book - not The Beatles, not Dylan, not Elvis - absolutely no one. Not even Beethoven, Mozart et al. And if they had to confer the Nobel prize to a musician, Paul Simon's lyrics are streets ahead of Dylan's. Just my $0.02.

    To me, not such a great interview for two reasons... Firstly, Rubenstein’s questions feel borne of a bio-read and, secondly, Simon elaborates extensively on subject matter (Zulus, anyone?) completely disassociated from the raison d’être of the event. Still, better to have seen it than not.

    • @stevec8555

      Bio read indeed! Rubinstein is a total moron!

    • @leon723
      @leon723 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree in part. The Rubenstein questions were too formulaic, and Simon himself called out. The Zulu piece was actually pretty interesting to me and wasn't disassociated because it was part of his explanation of navigating the politics of the Graceland recordings.

      @@leon723 agreed, I found that part more interesting than anything else that was discussed... It was pretty much all down hill after the bizarre Carly Simon reference

  • @deborahsobel3314
    @deborahsobel3314 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not a great interview; I think Rubenstein in a fan but in this case not really listening to Paul's answers. Simon is a musician who loves music and takes joy in incorporating different sounds and rhythms in his own writing. Each song takes you to a different place and is its own unique experience. You will never be able to pin him down to one genre; just when you try, he has moved on to a different sound, a different emotion.

    Whats wrong with the audience, constantly laughing when there's no humour intended or least there's nothing funny. It's like a constant laughter track, which kinda demeans the whole subject matter to me.

    When I think of Simon Garfunkle, I think of Scarborough Fair and Sound of Silence. That's it. The rest is completely forgettable for me. I don't know if it's a cultural thing. I'm not American by birth nor am I from European heritage. Very very few pop songs have global appeal.

      @@cindymaceda2999 I am from Vietnam and came to the US when I was 16. I knew of Scarborough Fair even when I was in Vietnam and heard Sound of Silence in the US. Those were immediate hits for me. I had listened to more since then, but the rest did not have an impression on me. Bridge over troubled water was praised profusely, won several awards, but it's forgettable to me. But my daughter, born in the US, was surprised I didn't feel anything special about that song. It must be a cultural thing.

    Paul simon is a musician, not a great american, many of his songs, were stolen lyrics. He would set up song writing contest, dedicated to not ripping off the small song writers. But when he picked the songs the writer got ripped off.

      You need to be specific with examples. Which of your lines found its way into song? Or others you know?
      I suspect there were one or two disputed collaborations or copyrighting disputes-"Scarborough Fair", "Cloudy" but Paul Simon has an immense catalogue of songs with lyrics only he could write and so your allegation that stolen lyrics were a trait of his writing is far from the case.

    • @leon723
      @leon723 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't there's a credible case of plagiarism of lyrics that can be made against him. The guy invented phrases that you'd think were always part of our idiom ("still crazy after all these years," "in the company of strangers," as two examples), but they weren't until he made them so. As for the music, there was resentment that he took a chunk of Martin Carthy's guitar line from Scarborough Fair, but actually Simon's line was a bit different and, more importantly, the rearrangement of the song with the Canticle counterpoint is totally different from any version that came before it. On El Condor Pasa, Simon originally did not know that the melody was recent enough (from the 1920s or 30s) to be under copyright, and he later corrected the credit.
