I love how they go from talking about how people mishear lyrics to Paul mistaking Malcolm saying "exhaustive" for "exhausting" and that Malcolm doesn't correct him because it proves the point of what they were just saying.

If you haven’t listened to Miracle and Wonder, I urge you to download it immediately. I listen to it whenever I need a lift.

Paul can sit here and wax poetically/philosophically about how he writes about characters rather than himself but in the end it says a lot more that he now changes the words of The Boxer when he performs it because he feels the audience can't buy an old man singing from a young perspective. Its bizarre. Even Dylan doesn't do stuff like that.

Paul has commented about this. He is no longer anywhere near being "just a poor boy" anymore. So he now purposely chooses not to say that line. -I don't agree with that choice however and miss the original singers narrative voice. I never felt the need to interpret the "Boxer's" lyric as a first person autobiographical. Then again there's the line of "taking some comfort there." It must be true cause It gets a New York crowd cheer everytime!;-). Either way great interview, thanks for being so great Paul. Love and peace. -doug

Well, John le Machine, many singers like to tell the story of a song from the I-perspective. It's something that can be recommended, because speaking from what you feel rather than talking about what someone else is feeling, can help bring a story closer to what feels authentic. In my mind, this makes it appropriate for any singer to adapt the lyrics, without loosing the respect for the intention of the author. (if the intention can actually be fully understood - so often the author doesn't understand everything that springs from his/her mind)
But, if anyone has the eternal right to change his/her own lyrics, it would be the author. Don't you agree?

Why couldn't you include the songs? Very frustrating.

Gladwell is a sham of an intellectual

Here's a thought. Imagine if he developed an Elton John/Bernie Taupin relationship with Rhiannon Giddens. 😇

Man... I like Broken Record, & I LOVE Paul SImon... but after seeing Malcolm Gladwell 'debate,' on MUNK debates... naw.... I'll wait till Simon is talking with someone else.

a pointless video if you're not going to play the songs that the interviewee is talking about. nevertheless, a fine watch because I still dig Paul's writing. don't care for the Malcom fella who adds nothing of interest. kind of a headscratcher this one.
