Wow how did I miss this performance??? I requested R&B Natalie Cole on Pandora and !this began to play. I immediately came here to search it. I was surprised I had never heard this cuz Natalie is absolutely one of the greats and one of my favorites. So I'm pretty familiar with most of her recordings(before hearing this I would have said all). And as an added bonus, Eric Clapton AND Bonnie Raitt! Wow. This collaboration is the stuff of my dreams. I only wish I could have been there to witness this amazing performance. Natalie's vocals are fire and her versatility are second to none.

Natalie gave an arousing performance! Was so looking forward to her next cd which was going to be a Blues/Country delivery! She was the most versatile female singer in the music industry. I hate Bonnie Raitt didn’t make it to her studio schedule during the recording of her Leavin cd. She playing on a Natalie vocal would have been incredible. Natalie did record Bonnie’s penned song Love Letter. It is outstanding. Natalie also wanted B.B King on this cd as well but time and schedules sometimes conflict. I know her Blues cd would have been sensational because she was longing to do it and when something musically interested her, she absolutely killed it vocally! I miss her so much especially musically. The music business absolutely died after she and Aretha transcended to heaven. Vocally, no other female singer is not recording or releasing any great music. All the true female vocalists left have retired from the music business..... Pray Patti, Chaka, Gladys, Anita , Roberta, Stephanie Mills record again. I do love Ledisi, Rachell, Jennifer Hudson, KeKe, Kelly Price, Lizz Wright.. These ladies have the vocal gift....

Jazz Pianist Bobby Troup said in interview that he wrote Route 66 while he and two other musicians were travelling the old two lane road when it was still the major route between Los Angeles and Chicago where they'd just played a gig. He said he wrote it specifically with Nat King Cole in mind. That was who he wanted to record his new song.

Maybe you mean Sid McGinnis, from Paul Shaffer's band from the Letterman show (the house band for this event)? He's wearing a black tux, playing a dark sunburst strat. But I don't see anything covering the fingers of his left hand. Maybe you're confusing his hand with Bonnie Raitt's left hand, which has a slide over one finger??

Some of the solos were quite messy - sound- and technically-wise. Of course the enery was great and you could taste, smell, see and of course hear that they thoroughly enjoyed playing together. But isnt' t calming to see how highly seasoned professionals can also struggle with sound and lines at times?!

    • @BackToTheBlues

I thought that. Maybe she wasn't told how many other guitarists were going be there - it can be hard work 'finding your place' when there are that many. On the flipside, Eric Clapton looks uncharacteristically smiley.
This is one of the better behaved big jams though, everyone staying out of the way musically, particularly the harp player - knowing when to play is as important as knowing what to play. I don't know who the berady bloke is playing the Guild guitar, but I liked his solo.

"Route" is pronounced both ways. In Hank Williams' song, "Honky Tonk Blues", he pronounces it like you would "rout" rather than "root", rhyming it with "out" as in the lyrics:
"I left my home out on the rural route,
I told my pa I'm going steppin' out"...

@@coinneachmaclellan3121 That doesn't make it right. The "e" makes it an open vowel. No "e" makes it closed. It is important for clarity of communication that rout, which means a channel is distinguishable from route, which is on the surface.
