lol that reminds me of when I was little and wanted to send family burnt edge Christmas letters. I was burning papers in the tub to try to be safe and the fire alarm when off in the house. haha. Never going to try that one again!
I can't remember what I used to use for scorching the edges of things I wanted to burn. I don't think it was cigarettes, but am not sure. I sure wish I could remember what I used because it didn't set the paper on fire. Will need to think more about it.
The larger craft layer that you created the faux wood grain, that was only the Gina K craft paper right? That totally rocks.. that is way more economical than purchasing a background stamp, embossing folder or that already wood grained embossed paper...thanks!!!

I usually cut focal images using dies and larger pieces using a paper cutter. :)
