I'm so glad you did this video. I'm a surgical tech (scrub tech), and I'm a very kind person but I can't always show that in the O.R. because nurses, residents, and doctors (in my experience) have a tendency to look down on ST's and try to walk all over us. I agree with being a bit tough on the med students and residents, because it's so true that if they mess something up it screws me over, and the doctor blames the surgical tech before they blame themselves, the resident or medical student. Surgical techs are soooo under appreciated and represented! So shout out to ST's #backboneoftheOR :D
when I first scrubbed in on a surgery (as a mere undergrad!!!) I thought the scrub techs were being so strict and mean, but now I obviously realize how truly important having a sterile environment is to the life of the patient!
YES!! HAHA I was so butthurt as a med student! There are certainly people in medicine, no matter the field, who will be mean just to be mean, but Katie's perspective on why she's so tough in the OR is so valuable!
I had 8 rounds of chemo, 2 surgeries w/in 24 hours and just finished 25 rounds of radiation for breast cancer over the past 6 months. I had excellent doctors and nurses and I find medicine fascinating. Yesterday, I had my chemo port removed in a sterile environment and the PA and nurses were so professional and comforting. I find medicine so interesting.
@Jayy R get your PCE/HCE hours from working or volunteering at a hospital. For PCE: try being a CNA, EMT, etc. HCE is less hands on with patients like, pharmacy tech, clinical researcher, scribe, etc. You can google for more. Some schools don't require HCE/PCE hours but to stand out it is encouraged u do. Get strong recommendation letters from possibly an academic reference and professional reference (from your work place), write a good personal statement and of course get a high gpa. PA schools accept >3.0 gpa. Get good grades for your pre-reqs. Get high scores for your gre, pa-cat or even mcat (some schools may not need them though), furthermore get enough shadowing hours, volunteering (it doesn't have to be from a medical facility), etc. Fill out the caspa form when it rolls. When you apply, apply the year before ur intended admission date. ☺
amazing video Madalyn, I'm a doctor and my best friends in the hospital are the nurses and the scrub techs, I spend more time with them than with my colleague doctors.. I've learned a lot from them. they are the real heroes in Medicine ❤️
Hi Madalyn! When I finish this semester, I will officially be halfway (!!) through my PharmD. I LOVE when youtubers show the collaborative efforts between physicians and all others from the healthcare team. I know it's probably super different for each place you go, but I would love to continue to see the collaborative videos :) Probably a little hard to get people together for them, since everyone is crazy busy, but I can't tell you how much we enjoy seeing the interaction of the team as a whole. Thanks for doing that! :)
I’m pre PA and I’m so happy to have come across this video! So much information regarding each profession, scrub tech, pa, and residency. Love it all 💕💕💕💕 Good luck to everyone on the path toward their dream career. You’ve got this!🥰
Yay!!!! Im a scrub tech student and I’m so excited for this!! ❤️❤️ Currently going over disinfection and OR turnover as well as surgical site infection, I love my career choice! It truly is team effort 👌🏼
@@DrMadalyn omg I would NEVER be short or mean to a med student! They go through so much, they are learning just like the rest of us! Treat people they way you want to be treated! Never gets old. Med students are in OR as much as us learning and being hands on, it’s a team effort and the reason I’m there is to be a right hand man to my surgeon and additional residents/first assists.
@@sharquasiabrown3283 girl literally same ! I get discouraged bc it isn’t the most traditional option but it makes sooo much sense to me😩the only thing I’m concerned about it my undergrad GPA for PA school ! But luckily nursing majors can also become NP’s incase I have a change of heart.
Thank you for this video! I am a pre-PA and I work in the pediatric ICU as a nurse tech and recently I have been feeling so discouraged because the nursing environment has been so toxic in my unit. The nurses talk bad about each other and spread gossip and belittle the new nurses as well as the nurse techs. They treat us like the absolute bottom of the chain and are very condescending. I shadow an ortho PA and a urology PA and their fields are more male dominant and I have so much more enjoyed my time in those environments. It saddens me because my passion is in pediatrics but I am tired of dealing with the mean girls that have become Peds ICU nurses. I can respect someone who is “mean” in order to prevent harm coming to the patient like that scrub tech but I cannot stand mean people who just do it out of spite and in no relationship to patient advocacy but as a power trip. I really hope that I find a better work environment when I become a PA.
Current PA student doing my OB rotation right now, and i LOVE how direct the scrub tech i work with is. Lol shell slap my hand and bark at me sometimes but I appreciate it because usually im so hyper focused on the case and what i need to do ill make mindless little mistakes that she catches and corrects. All future clinicians, your didactics will not be able to prep you for every nuance of surgery. Your STs will be a saving grace on everything from sterile procedures, anticipating what can happen, and if theyre very experienced they’ll even improve your procedural techniques big time. Keep in mind their stern mentality is reflective of the gravity of the situation, not their opinions of you or anything. Dont let it get to you!
After getting my BS degree in a non-health related major, I decided to enroll in a Surg Tech program! I never heard of Surgical Techs before, but after researching about different roles in the OR and watching videos about them, I really can't wait!
There is SO much value in understanding the other #interprofessional roles on the team! This is an amazing way to learn that is VERY often overlooked. Thanks for all you do!
Yesss!! It's about being a team! I hate how the media (like movies & tv shows) only portray doctors & nurses - when really there is so much more and it's very unrealistic!
hey, my mom's a pa! :D she's so cool. she's working for an allergist at the moment but the first job i remember is her working for a pediatrician, which she absolutely adored. pa's are awesome but so many people don't know their job exists!
Hard facts from both providers! The book life is not real life! I passed my EMT course and thinking that I know what the life on the rig really was but I was sooooo wrong lol This is why people need to realize that medicine needs to be learned by doing and not just reading it.
Omg hi! I'm pre-PA working in labor and delivery as an L&D tech and training as a scrub tech on the job. I hope to continue to work in labor and delivery as a PA.

I'm a scrub and applying to PA school. We can be mean, but mostly we're nice. As long as the students come in, show respect and listen to us we're good. I plan on being an OBGYN PA hopefully in surgery. I LOVE SURGERY!
Great video. I'm a PA and I love how you promote the whole healthcare team. There is so much in-fighting in medicine, which is sad because it is a really difficult field to work in, especially now. I've started my own TH-cam channel and hope to have your kind of success! Best wishes on your medical career and your channel!

I would like her good energy in the ICU as long as she's focused and knows what she's doing and had this same bubbly personality when under pressure and emergency 🚨
Madalyn, I love your mentally; always willing to learn from other to improve yourself, and you are super sweet to everyone that you come across. Learning from other is the key to improve one self and we must know a little about every field to be successfully, not only the area we are trying to go for. I hope you inspired to become a better periodontist. I hope we can chat a bit
That’s what I’m highly considering to do too, it just sucks that I’ll have to essentially add a year to my undergrad just to get my pre-PA classes. What are you doing about this/what are you doing?
It is good to see why they are the way they are it is understandable. It is good to see different perspectives. I agree at the end of the day it is about the patient.
Yes, yes 👏One of the first of your videos I’ve watched and it’s very refreshing how emotionally intelligent and aware you are being. Seeing their perspectives really broadens how much more you can appreciate and grow personally in your career choice! I’ve recently become interested in the PA program but decided on nursing. For anyone who was unsure as to what career choice to make, have you dealt with this? And what made you choose pa over nursing or other professions ?? 😊
Awesome video again! Informative as always. There definitely is a stereotype about scrub techs where I am training, although I've personally had amazing experiences. It might also have to do with geography. People tend to be "straight shooters" up in the NE compared to the South. Nice sidestep at 2:36. Since we are in the thick of residency interview season, could you reflect a bit on your experience through this whole process in a future video (i.e. anxiety about invites, interview experience, weird questions, ranking process, etc.)? Keep up the awesome work!
From a Scrub Techs perspective, I typically enjoy having residents in the field as they can be very helpful. For example, helping to get the case started by tying up our gowns before scrubbing in, helping with patient positioning, putting up light handles while we are stringing out the suction and bovie, etc. Though at times, there are new residents that demand extraneous things and are not helpful to OR staff. As far as the reputation, we are taught to be assertive yet tactful. We protect the field and the patient, we keep the case flowing smoothly by procuring all necessary sterile items, instruments and equipment, which we are usually running around for throughout the day, before setting up the entire OR while still providing quick turnovers. We take call just like Surgeons, which means we get called in the middle of the night for emergent cases. My last hospital had us take call for 7+ consecutive days every 5 weeks for the specialty. We stay late and scrub overtime on a regular basis, get called in at 1am and manage to be there at 6am or earlier for early cases. We miss major life events because we are working. We have family members pass while not being able to be there for them like we should because we are taking care of other people and do not have regular jobs. During the staffing crisis over the past two years, the Scrub Tech will many times fill in for the anesthesia tech, setting up anesthesia circuits and helping to intubate/extubate, we help the OR nurses and we turn over our own rooms because the hospital doesn't want to hire an OR assistant, we make the OR bed and supply our own case carts when sterile processing is short staffed. We literally do everything to get the case started, scrubbed and turned over and we are the ones that get screamed at because the Surgeon is in a bad mood. They go off to do their notes after the case and don't even really realize there is only one person doing everything to turn over while the RN gets the next patient. I left a hospital I once loved one month ago because of the staffing crisis. I can't do my job safely if there are no adequate supplies, instruments, or staff to help. Most hospitals are desperate right now and this is something new residents should be aware of in terms of how they interact with staff. I'm a kind and easygoing person, but if the energy in the room is tense, it's most likely because the Surgeon or anesthesia is in a mood and the OR staff is getting treated like sh*t when we are already overworked and burned out. This is just a post pandemic perspective of a Scrub Tech. But hey, what do I know.
I am a 1st year Canadian nursing student and your videos are so inspiring to me! My end goal is to become a physician after nursing school! I'm finding nursing school really challenging but I know that everything will pay off in the end! Thanks so much for keeping me motivated through your videos! You are awesome!
Do more videos about this more. From janitor , cna, lvn, rn, it, tech, emt, kitchen staff. assistant, volunteer's, front desk, medical asistant and rt.
I just love the fact that you are so encouraging and above all emphasize on the well being of all around us.Believe me you have taught me to live every moment of life happily, enjoy everything you do,find happiness in every times of life😍😍😍😍.I also want to become a Doctor one day.😄May God bless you Madalyn's you are a great inspiration for me. You are so jolly and positive_natured girl which is very rare nowadays. You are a gem sweetheart.Never ever stop living your life like this.We all love you💞
Oh I would LOVE that!!! The problem is I don't often have time to work directly with them as I often am swamped doing the physician side of things :( But will definitely try later on when I have more time!
Much love for you and your videos, you are so kind and I hope you are doing well! :) I am currently a freshman in college and have been considering physician assistant studies and medical school. What would you recommend considering when exploring both careers?
I’m in scrub tech school!! I start my clinicals in May, this video is super helpful and really shows what great techs should look like. Molding myself to be like katie 🤣🤣
I am gonna take up nursing as my course for college then hopefully become a doctor just like you, and you inspire me so much!! Keep making videos and i hope someday i get to comment that i made it!! 🥺💗💗
Nursing school and then med school is great bc of the amount of clinical experience you will have; it’s simply more steps to get into med school. I think if you can, just find a scribe job while you’re in college since that’s an easier way to get a lot of experience in. But everyone has there own path to medicine :)
Completely agree with Taela! Nursing exprience before medical school is amazing and can give you valuable perspective! But if you're sure about going to med school and not considering being a nurse, I would just focus your energy into doing really well in school and getting to medical school. You'll be less tired and save a lot of time that way :)
I’m actually in sterile processing so I sterilize surgical instruments but I also interact and assist some scrub techs when on the surgical floor. I love the environment but I definitely want to be a PA or a doctor
I graduated from college 10 years ago. I am interested in PA program. But don’t know how to start. I had my BSC in Biology. I am wondering if I can do Scrub tech program this will help me to get into PA school. Also if you can please share where did Katie got her certificate from. Thanks
@@DrMadalyn no, but i actually just finished job shadowing an anesthesiologist. i was able to spend a lot of time with the PA and scrub techs. we had great conversations, and they taught me a lot. i love that you made this video breaking down stereotypes within the medical field!!
At my medical school, they no longer rely on practical study, but everything theoretical is because of corona, and our Numbers are very large. so l am very disappointed 😞
I volunteer at a hospital in labor and delivery and there are no pa’s in our hospital and I’m just curious if that the case for every hospital? I really want to be a PA either in pediatrics or LD in a hospital setting but I’m not sure if they have pas in hospitals
Omg I loved it!!! And also I can’t believe you replied to my comment 😲😃 🤗hugs made my day 🕺🏼 p.s I’m a studying (struggling) nurse and your channel is my #1 main source for inspiration / motivation 🤗 thank you !
@@DrMadalyn In Canada yes I have seen the patients vote. Love your videos ! I am a healthcare worker in Canada (EVS) and I have worked in OR as a cleaner , I love OR from my perspective.
I have been telling the world for 50 years that medical care is a necessity, unlike the arts/humanities/entertainment, and that we can therefore never have enough doctors & nurses and therefore nursing and medical schools should allow everyone in who wants in. And governments should pay the schools and the students to teach & to learn all this knowledge. Not my fault things are not this way. I have no control over that.
As a scrub tech, I’ve never heard of that stereotype. I’ve always enjoyed teaching the student the basics of surgery like scrubbing, gowning and gloving, and just where to stand in surgery. Just how it goes in my hospital.
I recently just passed my boards and I’m now a certified PA! ☺️

But hey, what do I know.
i hope it's better now...wanting to be a scrub tech but many of these stories are discouraging
I couldn't stop staring at ur brows lol they're so perfect!
Edit: and ur glasses are super cute! 👓🌞

Would love to see more interprofessional videos like this! Maybe you can do one with rehab professionals like OTs, PTs, and SLPs?
Oh I would LOVE that!!! The problem is I don't often have time to work directly with them as I often am swamped doing the physician side of things :( But will definitely try later on when I have more time!
You have such a welcoming and inviting presence!
I found your channel recently and I've been obsessed 😍btw you're so gorgeous!❤

The stereotypes are crazy to hear regarding scrub techs and OB departments
That was so interesting and informative, thank you guys so much!!!!!
Much love for you and your videos, you are so kind and I hope you are doing well! :) I am currently a freshman in college and have been considering physician assistant studies and medical school. What would you recommend considering when exploring both careers?
I have final exam this week 😭 if u wish me good luck i promise i will work my ass off to pass this exam 🥺❤️
GOOD LUCK!!! You got this!!
How’d it go?
I’m in scrub tech school!! I start my clinicals in May, this video is super helpful and really shows what great techs should look like. Molding myself to be like katie 🤣🤣

@@xomaiyanichole hope we make it!!!💗💗
@@unboxingangel5845 we will love ! I’m claiming it omg
I love the Scrub tech
How do you feel about going to nursing school then med school? 🥺💓
It's good start from nursing to med school.
@@DrMadalyn thank you so much! ☺️
That's what I'm planning to do as well! I am currently a first year nursing student :)
I will be stating PA school in January and would love to hear more about her role and if this was her first job out of school !
AWESOME! Congrats!
How is it going?
Enjoy your content/vids ... soon enough, the PAs will be shadowing you (lol!) ... stay healthy!
Thanks for spending time with us :)
Of course!! So grateful for the PAs I worked with for being so patient with me
I’m actually in sterile processing so I sterilize surgical instruments but I also interact and assist some scrub techs when on the surgical floor. I love the environment but I definitely want to be a PA or a doctor
I am not in medicine AT ALL (nor do I want to be lol) but this video was so fun and insightful! :D
I graduated from college 10 years ago. I am interested in PA program. But don’t know how to start. I had my BSC in Biology. I am wondering if I can do Scrub tech program this will help me to get into PA school. Also if you can please share where did Katie got her certificate from. Thanks
I intend doing this too
i absolutely LOVE this video! 😘
Yay!! I'm so glad! Are you a PA or scrub tech!?
@@DrMadalyn no, but i actually just finished job shadowing an anesthesiologist. i was able to spend a lot of time with the PA and scrub techs. we had great conversations, and they taught me a lot. i love that you made this video breaking down stereotypes within the medical field!!
At my medical school, they no longer rely on practical study, but everything theoretical is because of corona, and our Numbers are very large. so l am very disappointed 😞
Embrace the online simulations. There is a ton of evidence that supports long term retention. Stay as safe as you can and #YouGotThis!
@@sim_aware thank you
Girl whered you get your glasses? Its prettyy
In med school do you see a lot of older students? Or students with children?
I want to become an OB Tech! Loved the video thanks so much.
i love thisss!!
all the support from morocco love youuuu
Thank you for the videos 🙂but I got a question are you a doctor or a physician associate ?
I volunteer at a hospital in labor and delivery and there are no pa’s in our hospital and I’m just curious if that the case for every hospital? I really want to be a PA either in pediatrics or LD in a hospital setting but I’m not sure if they have pas in hospitals
Thank you for this video, Pikachu!
Love your eyebrow
Ahh thanks for this !!
I am so excited for this video....😃 you have no idea
yay I hope you enjoyed!
Omg I loved it!!! And also I can’t believe you replied to my comment 😲😃 🤗hugs made my day 🕺🏼 p.s I’m a studying (struggling) nurse and your channel is my #1 main source for inspiration / motivation 🤗 thank you !
Love your videos! What camera and editing do you use? The quality is so sharp.
Question
Can patients in the hospital vote? I mean if they have to stay in the hospital how can they vote
Much love 💕
Hmm, that is a super good question! I'm not entirely sure): But imo, they should totally qualify for mail-in ballots!
@@DrMadalyn In Canada yes I have seen the patients vote. Love your videos ! I am a healthcare worker in Canada (EVS) and I have worked in OR as a cleaner , I love OR from my perspective.
Thank you for this!
Are you a PA or scrub tech!?
im a nursing student and this was a good video !

“Who are you going to remember, the book or the girl who was tough on you ?”
I love your vlogs, you is so beaultiful and charismatic😍😍😍😍😍
I am a high school student and you really inspiring to be a doctor and to love medicine🥰
Aww I'm so honored!!
Can you please do an NP’s interview??? I mean how’s their life, etc?
I have been telling the world for 50 years that medical care is a necessity, unlike the arts/humanities/entertainment,
and that we can therefore never have enough doctors & nurses and therefore nursing and medical schools should allow
everyone in who wants in. And governments should pay the schools and the students to teach & to learn all this knowledge.
Not my fault things are not this way. I have no control over that.
Love your video, ❤️❤️😍😍
Ob Tech here! 🥰🥰
Aspiring OBGYN PA
Loved the video thanks
As a scrub tech, I’ve never heard of that stereotype. I’ve always enjoyed teaching the student the basics of surgery like scrubbing, gowning and gloving, and just where to stand in surgery. Just how it goes in my hospital.
