    I had no idea about this profession until the Dean from my medschool told me about it.
    I withdrew from medschool past halfway of first year and he told me how this could be another option since my school also has a CAA program. Thanks for doing this !

      Why did you withdraw from med school?
      (If you reply. I will tell you an extraordinary story from my first week at Jefferson Med in Philly in 1980>)

      Not really. But I'll tell the story anyway.
      I re-entered the academic rodent relay after 6 years of pounding nails in the southern California construction business. I had previously earned a somewhat useless, in terms of employment, bachelor's degree in psychology. I spent 18 months getting my prerequisites in order and finishing my application. and volunteering in the local university hospital ER every Saturday night for over a year in San Diego. I wasn't competitive in the California applicant pool. so I moved back to my home in Texas to establish residency. There I continued taking courses by day at UTSA and got a 3-11 job as an orderly in the OR at the Methodist Hospital. After a round of interviews, I was admitted to Jefferson Medical College in 1980. (Legacy admission- My father and my brother had attended there.)
      So when I walked into that lecture hall the first Monday of the academic year, I was 30 years old, single ( but dating my future wife who was charge nurse back on my old orderly job, with over a thousand hours experience in the ER and almost a year in the OR.
      Needless to say, I worked for it and wanted it.
      So, after a week of basic introduction to medical school classes, the weekend came up, and a fraternity was having an all-hands freshman party on Friday night. I attended and started circulating about with a trusty solo cup of brewski in hand.
      I met Diedra. She told me her story.
      She had applied to medical school but had been denied that year and was put on a waitlist. She had rerouted her life and was at MIT in a graduate biochemistry program when Jeff called her Thursday evening and offered her a spot in this year's class if she wanted it. She had until Monday to decide. She verified the particulars of that phone call and said, "Yes."
      She had made it down to Philly by Friday noon and, after checking in with the University, decided to go to the party. Some guy had attended the first three days of class and said, "Nope. Not for me and had withdrawn."
      I stood there with my mouth open in shock, wondering what kind of person would do that. Jeff had big classes, 125, so I don't even remember him. (We were sorted alphabetically. Kates, Kane, Kavanagh, Kemper, etc.)
      Anyway, that is my story.
      ( American Medical schools were not selection after admission like a lot of Latin American or European schools were. In Mexico, they would, by law, admit over 600 people, and graduate 6 years later, about 100. The Americans figured if you were smart enough to get in, then they should try and keep you.

    Hi Sally! I am interested in pursuing the CAA route and I have loved watching your videos. I do have couple questions for you.
    1) I still have to do a few things for my application including getting my shadowing hours, possibly retaking the GRE and writing my personal statement. When do you recommend getting applications turned in? I know a lot of the schools have different deadlines and that a lot have rolling admission, but what timeframe do you recommend? When did you submit your applications?
    2) I took the GRE last year and got a 156 Verbal, 153 Quant, and a 4.5 Analytical writing and my GPA is 3.96. Do you think I should retake my GRE because of my lower quant score? What were your scores and other CAA students' scores if I may ask?
    3) What would you focus on writing about in the personal statement? I have about 800 hours of patient care experience having worked and volunteered in Physical therapy as an aide, do you think it would be good to include that on the application and on the personal statement?
    thank you!

    Hello,
    Thank you so much for your fantastic content! I have a bachelor's degree in Economics and zero clinical/medical experience. I never pursued a career in the medical field because I didn't want to go to medical school or take the CRNA route, but I've been interested in anesthesia all my life. I'm 25 now and think the CAA might be a suitable pathway for me. I can get through the prerequisite courses just fine; I'm concerned that I will seem like the wrong candidate for not having medical experience. What would be your advice to obtain the hands-on experience I need to be admitted into a CAA program? I feel as though the clock is ticking, and if I'm going to go back to school, it has to be now while I still have the energy.

    Nice video. Very informative. CRNAs and AAs have similarities, but the opportunities for advancement diverge once you get into more critical care, rural healthcare, and full-service anesthesia care where physicians and CRNAs work side-by-side running their own rooms vs. a care team model. Suggamadex for the win!

    • @thatwasantique6708
      @thatwasantique6708 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's nothing special abt cRNA's. The advantage they have is their profession started way earlier and they're good lobbyists. Same thing with PA and NPs
      For me i think this agenda cRNA's try to push on a daily of indepence ( i even saw a post where one cRNA said he's better than anesthesiologist and i was perplexed) needs to stop. CRNA's are even pushing for agendas to start supervising CAA's 🤣🤣 man i don't know what this is🤣it's like NPs saying that they want to supervise PA's
      cRNA's and CAA's are assistants to anesthesiologists

    • @DRDRDR7809
      @DRDRDR7809 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @@thatwasantique6708, thank you for your comment. While it doesn’t really affect me either way, I hope you're feeling better now. I'm not sure why you have chosen to comment on my comment, but I'll try to clear it up any confusion on your end. @Anesthesiasal posted a good video about CAAs based on many of the questions asked by her other subscribers. I merely pointed out anything that could help describe the similarities and differences between CRNAs and CAAs because people deserve to know what options/paths are out there. I can't speak to your anecdotal evidence about some CRNA saying something about some anesthesiologist. Inflammatory comments like yours only aim to divide CAAs, CRNAs and MD/DOs trained in anesthesiology. Experienced providers know the credentials behind your name may grant you a position in an anesthesia department, but they do not make you a provider capable of independent thinking or practice, be it supervised or unsupervised.

    hi there! i just came across your video and it is insightful as i’m looking into applying to one of these programs! one thing i did find confusing about your video was the way you described what a CAA is. from what i gathered, CAAs are not PAs. while both practice as extensions of a physician, PAs and CAAs undergo vastly different education and certification/ licensure requirements. Therefore, can CAAs “essentially” be considered as PAs specializing in anesthesia?

    • @Anesthesiasal
      @Anesthesiasal  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The easiest way to describe it is CAAs are “somewhat” like PAs. That’s the short form of my explanation. Both CAA and PA programs, although different degrees, are about 2.5 years. It’s great that you understand the differences between the two professions! Feel free to educate others as well

    Hello !! So good to see another specialty that i did not know about .. its so interesting to see that there are so diverse jobs. I am currently senior in undergrad planning to goto pa school. So to be clear. Will i be able to be a anesthesia assistant by graduating in pa school? Or is that another program? Whats the big difference would you think between the two? Thank you soo much..

      Hey! You will have to get a masters in anesthesiology from an anesthesiologist assistant program to become a CAA.

      @@spark43259 It is similar length! But you will only be able to do anesthesia when you graduate. You can either take the MCAT or GRE (diff programs have diff preferences)
      PAs are able to work in all 50 states and can work in a variety of specialties.

    I know this may not apply to a lot of ppl here, but aim thinking of changing careers. I’ve been researching CAA for awhile and really considering it. However, I have no background in medical. It would be a complete change for me. Do you know of anyone who has made a career change to this field? I’m a Case Manager now. I’ve always wanted a medical career, but didn’t have the confidence to pursue.

    How much of a problem is the fact that a surgeon could sometimes yell at an anesthesiologist??
    I'd say that is the only thing keeping me from choosing this specialty because i would not be able to just stand there while being yelled at.
