Joseph Casey I am impressed. I would have required the asking of only one question, per person. Give someone else some questioning time. Three parts, no way.
Milton Friedman was a remarkable man with a remarkable intellect and remarkable memory. I doubt my ability to remember each of the three questions! I'm sharing his videos with my 20 year old son, in the hopes of educating him on the basic principles of economics, and the tremendous importance and advantages of a free economic system!
If you extort people for money, that's called robbery. If a big corp extorts people for money, that's called business. If the government extorts people for money, that's called taxation.
This man had such an incredible grasp of the concepts that affect society... and he was also genius enough to simplify them so that healthy principles could be understood and fostered in all who heard him. Milton Friedman was sincere, truthful and genuinely wanted to see the betterment of society as a whole--the mark of a truly great economist.
If we had only listened to him and heeded what was being said but we became complacent. Our school systems, media became invaded and controlled by the non producers. Our government is a unchecked beast right now as i sit here - 2021, Day 11. What a shame.
Milton Friedman is someone every American needs to listen to and learn from. I have listened to people in their 40s 50s 60s 70s and 80s talk about government as a thing that thinks independent of the people that are in government my entire life. The people in those age groups are the people teaching the youth today their failed understanding. Its also those age groups that hold the majority of the countries wealth. Those groups are the most thick headed and without them admitting they are wrong on what they think they know and learning what is correct this country will continue to be a sinking ship. Its god damned embarrassing how many people are working successful jobs and have met their goals in their lifetime and are still children throwing temper tantrums when someone proves them wrong. When its shown they are the ones who let this country go to shit through their collective mismanagement by following the incorrect principles to long term success. Their lack of care and selfishness has condemned their children to lifetimes of debt and poverty.
@ 2:13....."spending isn't good, what's good is producing". What a great concept. If 100% of Americans "produced" something of value, we would be much better off as a society. Instead.....50% of us don't do anything, don't pay taxes, and ultimately have to depend on the 50% that do produce something. Eventually, more people will be in the cart, then pulling the cart.
Diogo Dias Spending is not an end unto itself, production is all that matters. If money is spent just for the sake of spending, nothing is gained. Only when money is spent for something produced is anything gained, and that is only because something was produced. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_broken_window
Diogo Dias You completely misunderstood the broken window fallacy. It says the opposite of what you think it does. People spend money for the sake of spending money all the time. It's called consumerism and its encouraged by some as good for the economy, but that is a fallacy. However, this thread is about how it pertains to a bloated government.
nice interview, things really changed for friedman 18 years earlier, after meeting with ronald coase. by then friedman was already working with systems control, but when he saw coase's equations and recognized their potential for establishing new financial and insurance products, he wrote them into chicago-school law. thus making milton the fed's economic echo for the next 40 years, and giving policy makers & financiers a green light to produce the extraordinary levels of wealth condensation & evaporation we see today.
We spend one semester teaching Keynesian economics and all the bulshit of the multiplier without even using this beautiful explanation from the supply side.
I remember when Milton Friedman came to my university in the late 1970s. Although a lot of the students didn't like him (though to be fair they really didn't understand or even know his work), they were all polite to him. Imagine if Milton Friedman were to try to speak today at Berkeley or other schools where they have threatened Ben Shapiro and attacked speakers?! The modern Storm Troopers of the far Left make their requirements known quickly and violently.
Let me ask you a question Christopher, how do you think Milton Friedman would do as an economic advisor? What do you think the country would like after following his ideas?
Today we're on the USS Titanic. Government at all levels is sinking us. 40 years ago I was a low level manager in state government. I was ordered to spend money for things we didn't need because if we didn't we would lose the funding for the next year. It's only worse now.
An all-too-common story. I had it from a family friend in the school system. "We have all new stuff! Can you use the money in another department?" "Spend it, or they'll cut the budget next year."
Same with the military. Use all 20,000 rounds for the company so we don’t send any back, if not we’re going to be short ammo next year and no retakes for qualifying.

Friedman preaches liberty, which is the path to self-reliance, dignity and prosperity. This is the path that God wants for us, and that is why Friedman is a gift from God. Just ask yourself: are Americans freer since Obama took office?
You have no idea what you're talking about. Give me an example of how the world is freer now that Obama is president. Milton is the best. Small government...Limited government is what the founding fathers and the constitution is all about. Power to the People! We the People. For the People. By the People. USA USA USA USA
Even as a left leaning Economics student in the early 1980s I had to respect the intellect, knowledge and simplicity of communication of Milton Friedman. I am a lot more experienced and wiser now and Friedman’s message is more pertinent than ever.
The guys smart but being smart and being right arent mutually inclusive. The guy was so hopped up on his own fumes that he couldnt engage fully in criticisms of his theories. From him and the Chicago boys we get the disaster that is the Pinochet government in Chile, and the multitude of his policy preferences never actualized in the US. On the whole his report card isnt great.
These basic principles form the foundation of our self-government system. We all (should have) learned these things BEFORE we left for high school. This man calmly reminds us of how thoroughly the Founders thought this through.
We do, but there's a lot of equally wise and logical thinkers among us already. They just get ignored - the same way Milton Friedman was widely ignored. Instead, most people get persuaded by pandering, lowlife politicians and ignorant but well-spoken celebrities. But there's hope! One nice thing about TH-cam and the internet is that great ideas and great thinkers never go away.
"TOTAL GOVERNMENT SPENDING WAS 10% OF INCOME" I wish every person on Earth could see that. When we were at our height (arguably the most powerful nation this world has ever seen because of the empire) 10% of income was spent by the government. What more proof of capitalism being the best form of system there is?
Weird how a quick inteneck check revealed total government spending was actually 237% of income (gov spending as a percent of GDP) during that time and has never been below 25% of GDP. Perhaps he means something different by "% of income."
Weird how a quick google search shows government spending as a percentage of GDP below 10 percent for the entire 19th century and only went above 10 percent since 1900. So weird.
@@Hexum311ctb it's almost as if you give women the right to vote, they'll vote themselves a larger government with welfare with your money thanks to their hypergamous instinct to be protected and provided for.
Dec 2014 LONDON - Share prices went through the roof, speculation ran wild and money poured into ill-fated ventures before the boom turned, inevitably and catastrophically, to bust. After that financial crash in 1720, called the South Sea Bubble, the British government was forced to undertake a bailout that eventually left several million pounds of debt on its books. Almost three centuries later, Britons are still paying interest on a small part of that obligation. In Great Britain, a considerable number of people were ruined by the share collapse, and the national economy greatly reduced as a result. The founders of the scheme engaged in insider trading, using their advance knowledge of when national debt was to be consolidated to make large profits from purchasing debt in advance. Huge bribes were given to politicians to support the Acts of Parliament necessary for the scheme.[4] Company money was used to deal in its own shares, and selected individuals purchasing shares were given loans backed by those same shares to spend on purchasing more shares. The expectation of profits from trade with South America was used to encourage the public to purchase shares, but the bubble prices reached far beyond the profits of the slave trade. OK government is bad, but that makes private industry badder, and we are the government.
There should be little to no federal tax. That, or there should be a flat tax of 10% for everyone. Taxes should be concentrated locally just for school and roads/infrastructure. The federal government can only hurt the economy.
There should be zero federal tax. States should raise revenue however they will, let them compete for tax money, for productive citizens, and then contribute a set, flat percentage of their takings to Washington for the purposes of defense and those departments and functions that existed before 1900, and then abolish the rest. We will have as much growth as we want forever on those terms.
States won't cooperate when it comes to building national infrastructure or passing federal laws. That's why you have and in fact need a federal government. If there is no function to federal government, why not break up into x number of smaller countries?
@@capnskiddies For most of the history of the US there was no federal income tax. Federal laws somehow managed to be passed. You know, by that body of government called Congress? National infrastructure? You mean like the bridges which are crumbling to dust?
Schools should not be financed by federal government, or maybe even state government. Schools should be local and private. Giant school systems become avenues to indoctrinate the next generation, rather than debate their parents. There must be diversity in school systems. No one method works for every child, and different parents have different world-views. Christian vs atheist. College vs trades. Full time class vs part time or per credit....
Freidman and Sowell should be required reading for every single high schooler in this country. They should also be required reading for every single incoming Congress Critter.

Milton Friedman was pure genius.
That's the way this *Legend* takes foolish doubts, Mind blowing
Such a beautiful mind. Common sense never sounded so good.
We need another friedman. The world is lacking his wisdom
We still have Thomas Sowell, but he's not being heard.
Peter Schift is the closest I have found.
i think ben shapiro may become sort of like friedman when he gets older.
Let us hope for another Milton being rediscovered same as Mr. Friedman was in the 70s :-) I wish I am that active in my late years...
This man is the definition of perspicacious.
He was pure brilliance!
Brilliant. Our nation needs many more men like Mr. Friedman if it's going to survive.
WOW! Brilliant!
I wish I had a Milton of Millennials.
You can pass this around on social media.
Bear Juden search up Ben Shapiro
Daniel Kalish agree that Shapiro is similar, but I would say that Friedman is closer to a pure-capitalist then Shapiro.
@@danielkalish8031 Shapiro is a neo-conservative who talks fast. Tom Woods is far better.
@@danielkalish8031 Ben Shapiro is an idiot, comparing him to Friedman is an insult.

Dec 2014
LONDON - Share prices went through the roof, speculation ran wild and money poured into ill-fated ventures before the boom turned, inevitably and catastrophically, to bust.
Man, you could hear this man for hours. What an intellectual!!
May God Bless Milton Freidman for understanding and explaining what amounts to the soul of a secular humankind.
Hahaha I love the title to this video...couldn't have said it better myself. Milton straight up crushing like a gangster
AMEN, Mr. Friedman!!
@@capnskiddies yes, let's' do that; abolish the fascist, uhm, I mean federal government
Note how respectful and kind his answers are. He doesn’t need to castigate the man for his question.
Just beautiful.
When governments make a decision it's made by a very small group of bureaucrats. When a market makes a decision it's generally made by millions.
This man was absolutely brilliant. We need more men like him =)
Obviously his warning was not heeded. Government has grown by leaps and bounds since 1978.
A genius ahead of his time.
dude remembered the first question word for word after he just gave a three minute answer to the third question..alien
A fantastic mind.
I couldn't even remember the questions they were so needlessly wordy. Friedman was so smart and fast on his feet.
Freidman and Sowell should be required reading for every single high schooler in this country.
They should also be required reading for every single incoming Congress Critter.
Freedom is sublime.
What a succinct and collected explanation of a fundamental principle that my generation and those younger have never experienced and are educated against. Power seeks power; Organisations tend to corruption.
We need a modern day Milton Friedman... badly.
I fear the government has now become "the master"!
if this guy would be president today he could run 3 presidences at the same time
Clarity of thought and understanding
Perhaps even more relevant today.
