You guys didn’t listen to anything the video was telling you about Bird. You talked over the whole video. It’s low quality so you have to pay attention and there are great stories and info. Don’t know why your watching the video if you are going to tell your friend the same info that’s in the video but just a wrong version of the info, like even though Michael Jordan joined the NBA years after Bird you know it was Jordan’s move. Seriously. You need to pause the video if you are going to talk. Bird is amazing and the video does not do him justice without the explanations from the coaches and players explaining what we are seeing.

There’s a famous quote from long time Lakers coach Pat Riley, if I recall correctly, regarding the difference between Larry Legend and Jordan. He says: “If a game is on the line, I want Jordan taking the shot. If my life is on the line, I want Bird.” That says a lot.

For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was and never had the chance to see him play this comment is for you. Remember in this comment I am just highlighting Larry's NBA accomplishments.
Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year of his NBA career. Just think about it, what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced. Food for thought.
At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go:
Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics:
    Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88);
    All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88);
Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012).
Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons.
    Career averages:
    24.3 points per game
    10.0 rebounds per game
    6.3 assists per game
    88.6% free throw percentage
    49.6% field goal percentage
    37.6% 3-point percentage
Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season

The night before a big game Bird could be found at a local bar drinking everyone under the table and getting into fist fights. Also, Jordan never beat Bird in the playoffs.
Two Pat Riley quotes about Bird:
    1) "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game I'd choose Michael Jordan; If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life...I'd take Larry Bird."

Yeah I was going to say -- if you see an OLDER player doing something that MJ did, you can bet MJ borrowed from the best. MJ took pride in borrowing from the best and making it prettier. And he also had his own arsenal. Most guys who were older than MJ didn't borrow from MJ because their bodies couldn't do it haha. And if you notice when younger players try to borrow from MJ, it's usually just a little bit lackluster. MJ made wide use of his glove, unprecedented vert, flexibility, burst speed, and phenomenal control of his body both on the ground and mid-air. He combined all of these things to create a lot of these moves. A lot of the jelly we see and some of the dunks, many of the one handed moves in the air with contortion, and I don't know if anyone did the fadeaway quite like he did -- every kid in the 90s started trying to learn a fadeaway jumper due to him because until him it never was that lethal - before him it was the hook shot. I think MJ was the god of control in the air. If he were playing today, he'd probably add the eurostep and other efficiency stuff that newer players do -- because MJ was always about adding in better fundamentals into his game (although I can't imagine him needing it since no one could catch him either way without it).

@@donolinger6904 I mean ... I wouldn't classify Larry's shots in the same stratosphere as MJ's fadeaway jumper. Fadeaway shot, sure, but he wasn't much of a jumper -- amazing shooter, but he didn't have that double pump fade everyone tried to imitate like MJ. It's not a diss on Larry -- he had plenty of things that over 99% of players even in the NBA can't do. He doesn't have to own MJs ups too.

Jordan had been in the league for a bit before Bird retired, they played each other quite a few times. Bird bested him in the finals mostly. 86 was Jordan's best year going by stats, still lost to Bird in the finals. Bird, to me was the complete package, played damn near every position on the court and affected the game in every way imaginable. For this reason I put Bird at #1 and Jordan at #2.

NBA Great, James Worthy, said two things about Larry, who he competed against many times in his career.
    1. "I would rather guard Michael Jordon, than Larry Bird" -- Worthy was talking about Larry being unpredictable and smart when it came to what he was going to do with the ball.
    2. "Jordon made you look Slow. Larry made you look STUPID."
    Charles Barkley said,
~"Larry being unathletic, was God's way of making it fair."
I'm not sure who said this quote...it might have been Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
~"Magic made easy passes look special....Bird made special passes look easy."
And in my not so humble opinion. Larry was Way better than top 10. Certainly Top 3.
For me, #1 all around best player...ever.
I'm a 59 year old woman, and I use to watch Larry on t.v., saw most of this play off games against the Lakers. I was in my 20s, and my uncle was a huge basketball fan. I use to go to his house to help take care of his mom, as he worked hard all day and he just needed some relax time at home.
I worked too, but I loved my grandma and admired my uncle, so I was there almost every basketball game day, or night so he could concentrate on his 'games' and I could help grandma, and also cook dinner for all of us. My uncle wasn't so much a Celtics fan, but he was sure in awe of Bird, and I learned some about all those players who were famous back then.

Birds left handed game game was played February 14, 1986 against the Portland Trailblazers and he did not take all shots left handed. Boston won the game 120-119 in overtime.
He ended up with 47 points, 22 of them from left handed shots.
His line for the game was
    21-34 fg, 3-3 3pt shots, 2-3 foul shots, 14 rebounds, 11 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 47 points.
As for Jordan winning 6 championships and never losing in the NBA finals making him the "GOAT" , how about Bill Russell?
Bill Russell played 13 years for the Celtics. He won 11 championships, 8 in a row, and lost once in the NBA finals. Imagine, he played 13 years and in 12 of those years his team went to the NBA finals and won 11 of those 12 times. In Russell's first 10 years the Celtics made it to the NBA finals every year.
Jordan played 13 years for the Bulls only getting to the finals 6 times and yes he won all six, however, that was 3 in a row twice.

I grew up a fan of Dr. J, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan, but the player who could beat you the most ways with the most skills was Larry Bird. Bird had the best combination of inside scoring, mid-range scoring, 3-point scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, basketball IQ, trash talking, work ethic, clutch performance, and leadership. Bird had it all from day 1 in the NBA. The others gained some of these things after several years. Bird was the Batman of the NBA. He was always several moves ahead of the competition, best clutch shooter of all-time, #2 all-time with winning percentage (Jordan is #40), he had the passing gift, and he could beat you more ways than just shooting. Jordan was dangerous when he had the ball. Bird was always dangerous - with or without the ball. Bird is top three all-time with Jordan and LeBron, but Bird is the best small forward of all-time. Hands down.
"If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird." - Legendary Lakers Coach Pat Riley
“I would much rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird, because you have to play the game as a thinker when you’re playing [Bird]. You have to get inside his mind. Larry wasn’t quick, he couldn’t jump really high, but there were just some sleepless nights.”
-James Worthy on Larry Bird, via ESPN SportsCentury
" The difference between Jordan and Bird was that Jordan made you look slow, Bird made you look stupid. " - James Worthy
“Larry Bird can’t jump, and he’s not that quick… But he makes up for it by using his head, analyzing the opponent. It makes him better than the competition… Consequently, he doesn’t have a weakness.” - Michael Jordan
Only one man dominated Jordan. His name was Larry Joe Bird. Bird even dominated Jordan after Bird’s back problems got worse in 1989.

Jordan spent 7 years in the league with Bird. Bird and the Celtics swept him in the playoffs.
The great Bulls teams came after Larry and Magic bowed out.
Jordan himself will tell you how good Bird was. He’s on record as saying no other small forward is in the same league as Larry Legend.
Bird played the last 6 years of his career with a back so bad he required medical treatment - often traction - to prepare to play. He also played his entire pro career with a damaged index finger on his shooting hand, which he said never had the same feel as it did in college.
Jordan is no doubt great -but he benefitted immensely from taking the reins from Magic and Larry, who once they left the stage paved the way for Jordan’s dominance in the 90s.
Listen to Jordan’s college teammate and Hall of Famer James Worthy discuss who he’d rather guard. Or Michael Cooper. Or Gary Payton.
Bird was as dangerous without the ball as with it. His passing and court vision meant you had to guard the lanes, but if you left him open he’d kill you. A 4-year stretch averaging 50-40-90? 7 of 8 years finishing 1 or 2 in MVP voting?
Yeah. Jordan sits at Larry’s table.
May I suggest as admitted novices to basketball history that you listen to the video rather than talking over it? The left handed game was covered - Bill Walton talks about it and about how Bird had announced it to the press - and highlights from it were shown, after which you discussed if were a real thing, and that you’d need to research it to see if it happened.
    Makes for frustrating viewing.

You fellas need a little more basketball education. Michael Jordan and Lebrun James both have Larry as their top 3 best players. Larry played almost half of his career with a disabling back injury, bilateral Achilles surgery, multiple facial fractures and suffered a tremendous injury to his shooting hand before he even started playing pro ball. James Worthy (a Laker great) said he would rather play against Jordan than Larry because Larry had such a phenomenal basketball IQ, so was much less predictable in what he was going to do. If you really want to learn more about him and Magic, watch the documentary A Courtship of Rivals. Best sports doc ever!

BANGSO, if you like Larry Bird and you want a Team to support, watch Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks, he plays like Larry Legend. And Kevin Durant is definitely a better Shooter and scorer than LeBron. In my Opinion Larry Bird is better than both of them though.

Bird is my number two after the devil himself Michael Jordan.
Bird is the most well rounded player EVER.. he wasnt the best at any one thing (unless we talking trash talk and hustle), he was never the BEST scorer, passer, rebounder, defender or shooter, he was just great at ALL OF THAT.. HE IS THE ONLY player in HISTORY to average atleast 24 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists per game for his CAREER. he ALSO shot 50% from fg, 40% from 3, and 90% from the free throw line (the first person in history to have average 50/40/90 in a season) TWICE (ONLY steve nash and Kevin durant have done that in two seasons and only like 7 players in history have done that in oNE season). Bird also led the league in defensive win shares FOUR times.. only 3 players have done that more times and only Hakeem Olajuwan has done it 4 times like bird.. Bird IS the most all around player EVER..

James worthy from the Lakers “I’d rather card, Michael Jordan, the Larry Bird. Because you have to get a Larry birds mind and know how he thinks. at a young Michael Jordan never beat Larry Bird in the Celtics in the playoffs pre-Scottie Pippen. The last couple years of bird saw the emergence of a young Michael Jordan, literally experience against young and athletic. They were fun games to watch.

Larry did play 3 quarters of that game left handed except for the long shots. He finished the game with 27 points left handed 47 overall. He could do that because he was ambidextrous, he could play with both hands.
Oh and for the record, Jordan NEVER beat Larry Bird, the Celtics swept the Bulls twice. When Jordan was still in college he was part of a group of players that were brought in to practice against the all stars. The ball bounced from the college end to the pro end and Bird picked it up. Jordan ran down, stuck out his hands for the ball and Larry looked him in the eye and threw back down the court. Bird was just establishing dominance to gain an advantage over a rookie, and it obviously worked.
Larry also played 7 years with an unstable spine, his back kept locking to try to stabilize itself, which was excruciating for Larry. Players report he would often have trouble getting his uniform on and there were some days when he would spend the night in traction so he could play the next day. He never took pain medication or shots for it either, he totally muscled through the pain. He just couldn't quit on his team, ever. The reason why he was like this, is because when he was a teenager his father committed suicide and for a long time Larry was mad at him, because he felt like he had quit on them.
If you look at the clip where he was signed, holding up his jersey, look at his right index finger. He had to have reconstructive surgery on it because he got it folded back playing baseball. This happed before he signed his Celtics contract. When they heard about it, he was called in, examined, and determined to be damaged goods. Red had him suit up and shoot some balls, and he never missed a shot.
Because of all his injuries, Larry only got to play for 13 years, all of them with the Celtics. He went on to win coach of the year coaching the Indiana Pacers, and executive of the year when he moved to the front office, a feat no other NBA player has ever accomplished. Only two other players have ever won 3 consecutive MVP trophies either.
The fact that Larry played the way he did and accomplished the stats that he did with a deformed finger on his shooting hand, a bad back, and two rebuilt Achilles heels, is why I will always consider him to be the GOAT.
