I know i'm one year to late, but the phalanx is a greek formation and was used by most civilizations trought history.
The testudo is the roman one
Yeah I got a thorough schooling on that at the time, especially on the Reddit thread. I was only familiar with the Roman use of the technique (probably from the film gladiator) and had heard the name phalanx, hence my mistake.
I'm 3 years later, but the Manapul (not sure how its spelled) is the Roman formation, the Tetsudo was a specific tactic they used.
@@piercearora7681 the manipulus, which I'm assuming is what you are referring to, was not a specific formation but a military unit composed of two centuria, it was mainly a way to divide the legion in smaller groups that would be easier to manoeuvre (there were 30 manipuli in each legion). Moreover it was only used until the second punic war, where it was replaced by the cohort.
Albeit i was kind of wrong on my original comment: the testudo is not the roman equivalent of the phalanx nor was it the main formation used by the Romans, who also made use of the phalanx formation quite often.
Not many people have Pathfinder based channels but the community for it is immense :P I imagine being a small channel doing stuff on Pathfinder consistently with nice quality content will quickly go up in the ranks :P I wish this for you m8

Taldor started out as an obvious Roman analogue but is now basically a late stage Byzantine empire with a little modern day America thrown in. They even have their own version of the Varangian Guard.

Just wanted to say I'm loving these videos. I know a lot of warhammer fantasy, elder scrolls, and D&D lore, but I'm just now getting into pathfinder. When I play an rpg I really like to understand the world so these are great for me so far to learn about the world I'll be playing in.

Nitsubur's western border was the sellen river. One of its colonies was talador. When earthfall happened talador and azlanti colonies combined to become where the video started.
You know that the phalanx was Greek and not Roman right. The legions where swordsmen who used two Javlins before engaging in hand to hand combat.
We did! We clarified this on the reddit post at the time, but the mistake was an oversight when we started turning our notes into a script, and whoever was writing that part at the time switched the terms around. Its a shame we did not catch it but its too late to correct it now.

our group is currently going over the material for 2e now. no guarantees but if people want to see that, we can probably make a video about the updated rules and lore once 2e get's it's official release.

The phalanx is the spartan unit the Romans were legionnaires. I forget the name of the evolved tactics the romans used is the testudo The main difference is in a phalanx large round shields are used to protect you and the guy to your left both with pikes being the main weapon with which was backed up by the Xiphos which was an iron or bronze short sword. The roman legions employed large tower shields in formations that were deeper than the phalanx which were used to form a metal box which protected from not only the sides but the top as well. Their primary weapon was a Roman short sword with few units employing polearms.

It was a lot of work split between 3 people and some of us wanted to move on to other projects. We felt it was better to stop while things were good rather than force ourselves to continue and let the quality decline.

Correction when it comes to your history!
Phalanx is not Roman, it's mostly attributed to Macedon, Greece and other Greek like states.
In fact it where the Romans and killed the formation with their own infantry tactics.

(google it real quick if you haven't)... well, I was wondering why they labeled Taldor as inbred Spain... it's CLEARLY inbred Italy...specifically Greco-Roman Italy...
