@Geralt of Trivia Yes but after my shitty remake I will purposely make award winning films afterward. So when I become famous, people will ask me "hey what was up with your one shitty Spike Lee movie reboot" and I'll say " Spike Lee had it coming". My entire career will be for this purpose, so after that I will retire and watch the sun set upon a grateful universe.

The whole point of Dae-su cutting his tongue out at the end was to show that he was apologizing for "talking too much." The form of self-sacrifice he chose was actually relevant to the crime that he was being accused of, and that's why Joo-win was moved to spare Mido. Joe just imprisoning himself for no reason cause he feels bad is so dumb.

I also really like that in the original Oldboy the guy taking revenge makes sure to keep Oh Dae-su alive, keep him healthy, keep him satisfied while on his quest for revenge(Paying the guy off to not attack Oh Dae-su, severing and giving him the hand of the guy he wanted to take to give him what he wants, etc). He's playing by the rules he set, he's being fair. Sure he was a horrible despicable person for doing that to someone in the first place and ruining a guy's life, but at the very least he has a set of principles he follows and sticks to, and is a respectable villain. That's compelling, that's a damn good villain.

The sad part about the hammer fight in the remake is that it’s completely divorced of context. In the original the reason it’s a total melee is because guns are very scarce in South Korea so thugs would just have whatever they can find. In America those thugs would absolutely have guns but it’s Oldboy so gotta have a hammer fight I guess. Same with the dumplings. Not only does this movie not give a shit but it’s actively not trying to localize and innovate on the original.

    • @hydras5947

As someone who just saw the original, it’s so funny seeing how little style there is in literally every aspect of the remake. From the direction, the color choices, the sets, the costumes, the camera work, the music, literally every aspect of the original films style was striped away. It genuinely feels like Spike Lee was forced to make this movie, so he just phoned everything in.

It's crazy right!? The lack of artistic vision in a literal sense is kinda nuts. Just the opening itself is like... what?? He's not captive at the police station, he's not talking to the camera, he doesn't seem to love his daughter at all. He's like... just an asshole. There's so little symbolism in the visuals except the most childish and obvious like the umbrella. And even that could have been really cool if they actually made the effort to make a custom umbrella prop that hides the hash marks until you look more closely but NOPE. Looks like they whipped it up on set that very day.

I'll be honest, when a content creator says to go check out film before watching their review, usually I'll ignore it. This time, however, I decided to go watch the original before finishing the video and it was the best decision I've made all day. There are so many aspects of the film, including, but not limited to the twist at the end, that I'm glad I was able to experience for myself. Coming back to this review after watching the movie, I'm just now realizing that there is a ton of foreshadowing that I didn't pick up on the first time watching. To anyone reading this, if the review wasn't enough of a recommendation to watch the original Old Boy, take it from me, this isn't one you want to miss.

The thing about Woo Jin is that, as Adam points out, if you forget about the fact that the girl was his sister, you can kinda almost sympathize with him. I mean, yes, that's obviously a pretty big fucking thing to overlook, but the point is that if you took the incest out of the equation you can kinda understand his point of view. Whereas in the American version, you literally can't take the incest out of the equation because it's no longer a story of two people the same age who love each other, it's a story of a grown man fucking his underage children and eventually trying to murder them. The idea that you could ever remotely empathize with this villain, even on a "he's still a psycho but I kinda get why he's upset" level, is just ludicrous.

Woo-jin was a compelling villain because he is basically the protagonist of his own revenge story, from his persepctive Dae-su seems like the one who caused his sister's death and ruined Woo-jin's life, we the audience only think differently because the story is told from the persepctive of Dae-su. Really Woo-jin did nothing to deserve what happened, yea he slept with his sister but it was a mutually consensual relationship where they both loved each other, it's not even comparable to Spike Lee's version.

  • @Alex-cw3rz
    @Alex-cw3rz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +206

To add to the idea of it being more believable that Oh Dae-su would be proficient in some sort of fighting is that they have conscription in South Korea, with his age he would have certainly completed that before he was locked away and I believe the camo he is wearing before he leave for soul in the flash back might be an indication that he is going to do it then, this would also advance the fact of him having no clue that the guys sister commited suicide as he and people he knew would be away in the armed forces. It is quite impressive how everything in Oldboy 2003 is interconnected.

Most international fans of korean films don't tend to hear about this film but it is a Crime/Gangster film that is really famous in Korea. Another recommendation I'd make is 'The Man from Nowhere' which is like the Korean version of John Wick (even though it was made in 2010). Both are equally great films and Choi Min Shik (The actor from Old Boy) even appears in New World.

    Quick Story:
So, I kept getting recommended this video periodically for several months, but I kept dismissing it. At the time, I hadn't watched very many videos by YMS, so a 1.5 hour long video by him didn't sound too appealing.
Finally, a few weeks ago, I gave in and started watching this video at around midnight. However, only 20 minutes in, Adum was able to convince me to actually stop watching his review to go watch the original Oldboy film.
I did so with an eyeroll.
I was intrigued enough, and I've seen plenty of foreign films, so I wasn't entirely against it. That being said, I didn't realize how long the movie was.
Several hours later, I'm contemplating one of the best plot twists of all time. I start thinking about how well everything was done in that film. My mind was genuinely blown.
However, it's late at night, and I have nobody to discuss this movie with.
Reluctantly, I come back to the review, and I pick up right where I left off.
To reiterate, at about four or five in the morning, I'm sitting there contemplating so much: All of the connecting plot-points throughout, the masterclass of cinematography, the genuinely believable acting, the impressive and fun fight scenes, the gut-wrenching twist, and the bittersweet ending.
All of this immediately followed up by Adum's high praise of the film I had just come to admire, alongside the scathing review of the remake that I was glad to have never seen.
It all resonated with me in a way that seemed almost ethereal. So much so, that I find it hard to describe.
I say all of this to say:
    How dare you *Adum?*
How dare you make me spend 3-4 hours *feeling emotions* instead of getting sleep?
    Absolutely despicable.

Ngl it took me over a year to watch this review lol. When this video first game out and I reached to the part where Adum said that watching the original Oldboy is highly recommended, I couldn’t push myself to stop watching the hour and a half long review just to watch the film itself. But fast forward a year and a half later, here I am praising Adum for recommending to watch the film before the review, cos honestly I was contemplating on watching the review first, but boy am I super glad that I actually took the time to watch Oldboy as I’m yet still left stunned by that crazy unexpected twist in the end. No one could’ve seen that coming, the film is a cinematic masterpiece. I also got the chance to watch the new Oldboy, which has soo many flaws compared to the original. Like the motives for the bad guy don’t make any sense; what the fuck did you expect from your father fucking your sister in school grounds lmaoo. The thing that I find frustrating about this is that as a base concept, _Oldboy_ (the original film of which happens to be my favorite movie) has an interesting hook that could be taken in essentially limitless directions... A man is imprisoned for years and suddenly set free. There's such a great mystery there, and you could build countless stories around that setup. So in theory, I don't have a problem with another _Oldboy_ being made. Just as the South Korean film was pretty different from the original Manga, a remake should be pretty different from the South Korean film. But they just did the worst possible thing with it... a watered-down shot-for-shot remake.
If I was the lead producer working on this movie, my goal wouldn't have been "Let's just do a hacky, shitty shot-for-shot remake." My goal would have been "Let's just take the basic set-up... and see just how unique and creative a story we could build off of that setup." I mean, sure, you could throw some nods and references in for fans (maybe a single-shot fight, or similar iconography in key scenes), but make the bulk of it totally unique.

Somethings I thought were weird that you didn't mention:
In 2003 there's a creepy painting on the wall with the quote "Laugh, and the world laughs with you;. Weep, and you weep alone." We see how this effects Oh Dae Su's attitude throughout the movie as he constantly laughs when he's in distress. It feels like that painting was put there by the mastermind on purpose as he later gives him the quote over the phone "Be it a rock or a grain of sand, in water they sink as the same," So it's clear he likes to speak in vague proverbs.
In 2013 the painting is replaced with a picture of a bellhop saying something like "Let us know how we can make your stay more comfortable" which makes no sense because it isn't a real hotel, and it has nothing to do with the themes of the movie. It's just a random nonsensical poster. He hallucinates the bellhop laughing at the TV, but it only happens once and it's unclear what this is even meant to convey.
    ---------------
The next thing is about the dumplings. They go out of their way in 2013 to make it seem like Joe just for whatever reason HATES dumplings (as YMS points out) but he didn't mention that when he successfully tracks down the right restaurant and eats the dumplings again he starts gobbling them down voraciously. I thought he hated dumplings? When and why did he start loving them? Why would he be happy to eat the food that reminds him of being a captive for 20 years?
    ---------------
The Headmaster somehow remembers everything about a student from like 30 years ago. This is a headmaster, not even a teacher. Why does she remember him so well while at the same time not remembering the rumor he spread about a girl who ended up getting relentlessly bullied and later murdered by her father who was also a teacher at the school?
    ---------------
Why did the bad guy's dad shoot him in the shoulder instead of the head? He shot each family member only once, but at least for the others he hit them in the chest. His son was clearly still alive but he just shoots himself without making sure he finished the job. It's not like he was on a time crunch, this seems like the sort of thing you'd want to do properly but whatever I guess.

It's so stupid that they changed the incest relationship, the sister brother angle made it forbidden love, something that was wrong but they loved each other so were willing to risk it. In the remake its a parent who rapes his children so often that he wants to kill anybody who stops him being raped. It even completely screws up the revenge of the villain as while he wanted revenge on Oh Dae-Su he ended on asking if they would be able to love each other despite it, so weirdly almost giving him a chance to have what he and his sister lost. But ye in the remake it was just "ye now you see how great it is to rape your children right?"

I've seen old boy twice and while I think its a brillaint piece of art I dont think its a film i could watch a third time. Its harrowing, just like all of Directors Park's other films, his work tends to slice off a small piece of your soul and faith in humanity, and you know it will never be returned to you, not even when the credits finish rolling. Even though he usually gives us a 'happy' ending the journey there is so painful and you feel so empty after. "Was all of this worth it?" I ask myself. "How long will their happiness last?"
So whenever I get the urge to watch Old Boy for a third time, i remind myself that its not something my soul can take and I watch this in depth analysis instead. It makes me appreciate the original film so much more.

They don't mean anything to her, she puts them on and you see it doesn't really hold any value to her (can't remember her name ATM). A quick side note:
In the original manga, the protagonist goes captive for ten years. Park added five for a reason. The limitation period on first degree murder was 15 years in Korea back then. Oh was framed for killing his wife, and there is a scene Lee sending Oh a chat message stating his false charge has been lifted (56:34). This period had been extended to 25 years in 2007, and finally gone limitless in 2015.

One detail that I really appreciated about the scene where Oh Dae-su tries to force himself through the feeding door of his prison is just how effortless the guard handles it. The way he manages to force Oh Dae-su back into his cell and then close the door/seal the latch using only his feet and without saying a word conveys a lot of information in a really simple an seamless way. For Oh Dae-su his world has been turned completely upside down, but for the guard this is just another day in a job he's seemingly done hundreds if not thousands of times before Oh Dae-su even arrived. It's the first hint we get that these are not amateurs and that while Oh Dae-su is the main focus, he likely isn't the only prisoner, which also teases the fact that his jailers might not be the ones with a vendetta, but rather some sort of weird and twisted business.
