Well since I have insomnia anyway, here some thoughts about good keybinds:
Z,X,C,V and especially space key are IMO the best keybinds for GCD locked non-caster classes, since you can use them with your thumb, while keeping your fingers on the WASD keys, wich is golden in unpredictable movement situations like machinist garden etc. With all other keybinds, you sometimes have to "stance dance", for example when you're strafing to the right with D, while having to press F, or G, which can quickly lead to partial GCD losses.
I would really recommend binding jump to middle mouse key or something, since Space and Shift-Space are just such nice keybinds, not only for easier movement, but especially for classes where you have to use one spell a lot. With space, you can thumb-spam your lighning bolts, frost bolts etc., without having to alter the position of your hand on the keyboard, which is very comfy in long sessions.
It's a good thing to have all non GCD abilities on your mouse (buttons and mouse wheel up/done etc.), so you don't have to remember which abilities are wich type, and can use them simultaneously with the keyboard abilities without much spamming.
Mouse wheel is also one of the coolest buttons, since you can spam it very quickly without much effort. This is particularly nice for abilities with several charges but no GCD, like guardian druids iron skin stacks. Also, binding 2 similar GCD spells (like e.g. damage reductions, taunts, or instant heals) to mouse wheel up and down, gives you the perfect emergency or EITHER-OR button, With one up-and-down mouse wheel flick, you don't risk overhealing or wasting taunts or damage reductions since the GCD prevents both abilities from triggering at the same time, should they both be available, but you can keep flicking it for 1,5 seconds, should you want to trigger the 2nd ability too. And while flicking, you have the other hand still free for movement.
IMO, binding often used rotational abilities to a mmo-mouse is a terrible solution, since it comes in your way when you have to move the mouse for target selection, mouse-over dotting, mouse strafing/ movement, etc. But for abilities with longer cooldowns (15sec plus) and more situational spells it's very nice to have. But if it has to many buttons on the side, it will require you A LOT of practice to not accidentaly press those buttons while moving the mouse, since most people are used to move their mouse with a firm grip. 3 or 4 side buttons is IMO more than enough, since you can also combine them with keyboard modifiers, for more binds.

Using your pinkie knuckle for the ctrl key is genius! Curious how you feel about "click healing" vs keyboard keys + mouseover macros?
A tip from me: As a tank, I primarily walk/steer/strafe using mouse buttons. This opens up all kinds of keybinds that might otherwise be impossible (ie, Shift + 1 while strafing left). With some practice, you can seamlessly delegate movement to the "less busy" hand when the situation requires it. Also great for kiting DPS classes like Mages and Hunters.

    • @stephanvandermeijden289
      @stephanvandermeijden289 หลายเดือนก่อน

Click healing is always slower than using mouseover macro's. Not just that, but you also don't have to retarged the mob/boss to deal damage to or interrupt.
EDIT: 3 years too late, woops.

    Helpful Resto Druid macros:
    #showtooltip
    /use [talent:3/1] Typhoon; [talent:3/2] Maim; [talent:3/3] Incapacitating Roar
This will allow you to use the corresponding ability based on the talent selected.

    #showtooltip
    /cast [@mouseover, help, nodead]Swiftmend;[@target, harm, nodead] Sunfire

/cast [@mouseover, help, nodead] Regrowth;[@target, harm, nodead] Starsurge
    #showtooltip
/cast [@mouseover, help, nodead] Wild Growth;[@target, harm, nodead] Starfire
These will allow you to use 2 abilities on the same bind depending on the situation, and help with the druid button bloat. If you are moused over a friendly target, it will take you out of cat or moonkin form and use the heal. If you aren't moused over a friendly target, AND in cat or moonkin form with an enemy targeted, it will use the dps ability. They are, of course, interchangeable if you want different combinations. :)

You might notice that some players jump a lot. This is to enable movement while using instant spells. If you jump during movement, you don't lose momentum. For that brief moment your hand is completely free and you can use any instant spell combination you want. I, myself, learned this intuitively - never thought about not putting instants on 2.

Backpeddle is an important bind for tanks. Sometimes you need to position either yourself or mobs a very specific way and/or just a tiny inch and strafing might not do the trick.

MMO Mouse is an amazing tool, using g600 pretty much since it's release in the 2012. I've tried Naga as well, but didn't like it. So you'll have to check few different mice to figure out what fits you.
I'm surprised you haven't mentioned using VuhDo or similar addons, that will allow you to "bind" spells to your left/right/middle/additional mouse buttons when you're hovering the VuhDo frame, saving a lot of keybinds for the other spells. For example I'm learning shaman now, and have binded:
    LMB: Healing Surge
    RMB: Chain Heal
    MMB: Healing Wave
    Alt + LMB: Riptide
    Alt + RMB: Unleash Life
    Ctrl + LMB: Purify
    Ctrl + RMB: Target

Since I had to rebind a lot of keys, I developed some fixed steps to help organize them:
    - Clean your whole UI and start from zero. Take this chance to reread all your skills. This will often help you diagnose misuses and come up with better places/binds for your skills.
    - Organize them visually *before* binding any keys to any place. Your keybinds will often not make any sense visually.
    - Try not to strain either of your hands too much. Remember you can always bind stuff on your mouse too. Including on scroll up/down and pressing the wheel. Also remember both your mouse and keyboard have a limit to buttons pressed at the same time, so plan well for this.
    - Group your abilities per use (e.g. "rotation", "damage cooldowns", "defensive cooldowns", "crowd control") and keep them visually together. This way you only need to remember which group they're in to figure where they are.
    - Make sure to not place important cooldowns bound close to abilities you'll use with frequency (e.g. Interrupt on Q and Divine Shield on shift + Q), as that can cost you dearly.
    - Every single time you change your keybinds, make sure you do *extensive* testing. You don't want to forget where you put stuff during combat, you don't want to lag, you don't want to press the old key by mistake, and most importantly, you don't want to find out too late that you're having a tough time to cast that while walking around.

Just to make this more interesting, you can use shift+scroll up, down and click, crtl+scroll up, down and click and, finally, alt+scroll up, down and click. 9 spells on your mouse. I think the whole anti backpedel narrative is totally overblown personally. Clicking is bad, and keyboard turning is also bad, but backpedaling is absolutely useful and perfectly fine to do in many situations and side strafing backwords as an alternative is clunky and has it's own very real issues in actual practice. If you're trying to run away at full speed while still attacking as a Hunter, that's like one of the few times backpedaling is legitimately bad, but if you're some melee trying to position properly to keep uptime while staying mobile, backpedal is absolutely fine to do. I'll never remove backpedal, it's just another movement tool and to remove it hamstrings your ability to move exactly the way that you want to.

question: is there a particular reason why you use mouseover macros to heal instead of just binding your healing spells to different mouse clicks and modifiers through vuhdo? for example, i bind my rejuv to left click, my swiftmend to shift + left click, etc. this allows me to free up a lot of keyboard binds for rotational/utility/cooldown abilities, and makes it really easy to heal while moving. to me, it's always felt faster than using mouseover macros, but it seems to be a much less popular method for healing. it's always worked well for me, but i'm planning on trying to push keys in shadowlands, so i'm wondering if there's a reason not as many people seem to do it? thanks!

I'm coming back into this game after a 12+ year break. I don't remember having issues with keeping track of keys for my abilities...
The biggest issue I had as a tank, is I was completely tunnel visioned on the ability icons themselves. I was constantly watching the timers and to see when things would come off cooldown and I was so hyper focused on watching this, that I had a hell of a hard time knowing what was going on in the actual game itself. It became increasingly stressful the more difficult content became, and by the time I was trying to tank 10 man raids...I quickly burnt out and quit.
At least jumping back into the game I'm well aware that this is an issue for me, so I can work on it as I slowly level a new alt up.

Listen fam I get aotc and ksm no problem while clicking all my spells. It's fine if you master it. BUT!!! You can do even better by using keybinds. I switched this expansion after 13 years of clicking. It's always going to be better in the long run if you just learn keybinds. An MMO mouse is awesome if you lack dexterity in your left hand.

  • @Collins311
    @Collins311 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Get an MMO mouse with 10-12 buttons on the side. Keep your left hand on your movement keys. With your thumb and pinky you should have access to SHIFT, CTRL,ALT, SHIFT+ALT, & CTRL+ALT pretty easily. That gives you up to a maximum of 60- 72 keybinds without ever having to move your left hand off WASD for movement and you can still move with the mouse. Once you master this it really opens up movement and control of your character.
I found it helpful to have my actual buttons on screen oriented in the same way as the side of the MMO mouse when learning this setup. good luck.

I really disliked WoW until I got a MMO mouse. The game is unplayable for me without it. There are just too many abilities that require mapping and a ton of movement is required in raids compared to the MMO I came from (EQ2). Having a MMO mouse lets me more easily execute my rotation and keeps my left hand free to move to do raid mechanics.

I've found 12345QERTFC and shift variations of these being extremely easy to press if youve got less mouse button choices. All my DoT classes have main dots Q/E. All classes interrupt/dispel on 1. R/F is main stuff, Frost Strike/Oblit, Wrath/Starfire, Fireball/Pyroblast etc. Makes classes feel a little similar, but makes multiclassing stuff super easy.

How I was taught, and this may work for others as well:
I am using a normal keyboard, and a Logitech G502 mouse. I main Monk.
I have three main hotbars. The main is R-Q, F-A, V-Z. The second is R-Ctrl (mapped to DPS Shift button) + R-Q, F-A, V-Z. The third is 1-6, and R-Ctrl + 1-6. The two buttons on the top of my mouse, next to the left button, are mapped to 1 and 2, which is for movement abilities. The default back button on the mouse is mapped to autorun toggle. The default forward button now pulls up Opie. I keep two extra hotbars in the corner of my screen for things I just don't need to use often, and are not mapped: revives, Zen Pilgramage, food, gliders, profession skills.
I generally reserve R-Q for attacks or main abilities for the spec. F-A for stuns, overflow abilities. V-Z for self heals and cleansers. Ctrl V-Z for mitigators. The numbers bar is reserved for, in this order: Movement, long drink buffs (Mana Tea), mounts, revives.

The first step is to backpedal. The next step is to remove backpedal from your binds. The ultimate step is to put backpedal back in your keybindings (and find other binds for those abilities you bound to S), and use it like a pro only whenever you have to. If you don't believe me, try moving out of the cage thing whatever it's called from horrific visions while channeling fists of fury AND dealing damage with it, without backpedaling.
