  • With the state of whiskey we open Knob Creek 18 not expecting much. We are in a world where age statements push a giant premium and every limited is $200+. Knock creek 18 clocks in at $170 and we weren't giant fans of the 15, how does the 18 pan out?

    Dan, you said Parker's a few times there, were you talking about Parker's Heritage? Which comes from Heaven Hill, not Beam? (Also, would be really fun to see a blind between the 9, 12, 15, and 18. Or ditch the 9 and add a single barrel, proofed down to 100.)

    At this point, I feel like all special releases are cash grabs. They're all now priced minimum $80-$100 MSRP (or more - $250, like you said). They're allocated and almost impossible to find or stores hold onto them for lotteries or store owners jack up the prices. It really takes the pleasure out of looking for a bottle or even drinking the whiskey.

    • @lexwaldez

      Yeah, I agree. I've purchased some good, expensive bottles recently and I finally decided I'm not spending more than $85 for a bottle anymore. There are a LOT of delicious bottles out there for under $100. I just decided to not take part in this craziness anymore.

      I was so excited about it being good that I compared flavor profiles instead of distillery releases. Heaven hill and Knob creek can share a lot of notes on some releases and I feel like this was good enough to be in a bottle that's highly sought after/has a secondary value. Damn good whiskey throwing me off lol.

      I asked this one time and it has something to do with Takara actually owning Blanton's and not Buffalo Trace, but they are sort of..contract distilling Blanton's? I'm probably butchering this, but essentially Sazerac doesn't own it so it would be more on Takara to contract Buffalo Trace to make a mash bill #2 Antique Collection bottle.

      That’s my favorite KC so far as well. I did a review of the KC18 as well on my channel and it’s tough the KC12CS is so thick and that true cask strength kicks it up a notch I think. It’s close for sure the KC12CS is probably more complex but If you like the oak the KC18 is probably better

    • @jham2449
      @jham2449 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Anfwon I agree, an 18 CS would make the $170 easier to spend. However, in today's world of bourbon I'm not super upset with that price for an 18yr release. Some of you are not taking into consideration and/or understanding that this bourbon and other 12yr + bourbons are sitting for a very long time. Time = money. For an 18 year old bourbon at $180 or under is at least fair/reasonable. There isn't a mass variety of or a lot of older than 15 year bourbons out there and most of them are very likely much more expensive than this.

    IMO, the age is the exception to the rule of proof vs price. Depending on the number of bottles, the scarcity and age are the biggest factors on pricing. If I can find this for SRP, it's a buy. But anything over $200, it's a pass for me. I'll probably try to find this at a bourbon bar to see if I need to raise or lower the bar on the purchase.

    I’ve only had one bottle from Knob Creek and it was the 12 year and I absolutely loved it. I’ve had a few bottles of Bookers and it is good, it’s just not worth it’s price point and it can be super nutty. If Bookers was in the $80 range it’s 100% a buy. Also, like Dan was saying, Limited runs are so allocated now, it’s almost impossible to find one which also drives up the price to that over $100 mark. Some distillers are making LEs available only at their locations like the Four Roses LE. If I can ever find the 18 in the wild I’ll definitely pick one up.

    Had a pour of this last Friday at a bar. This 18yr slaps, and I'm not even a huge fan of older highly oaked whiskey's. Also, at the end you mentioned little book. I have had the newest chapter 6 and it is quite enjoyable. Yes it is 4yr and 5yr whiskey's, and yes it is $120 msrp, but good is good.

    agree with the proof point on it. It’s perfect . I get that it’s fair at 10$ per year BUT it’s a big leap from their last releases at 12 and 15 ..

    love knob creek so this was great to watch! I was wondering how does it compare to either EC 18 year or Eagle Rare 17 year? since they are similar in age and not barrel proof

    (PROOF x AGE) divided by PRICE = VALUE.
    Anywhere from 8-10 is average value.
    15-20 is excellent. 20+ is amazing. (IF IT TASTES GOOD)
    Russells 10 is a 22.5.
    Jameson is a 10.
    Knob Creek 18 is a 10.6.
    I LIKE MATH.

      The problem with this formula is that it completely ignores the most important factor. Taste.

    I also wanted to mention never let price affect your whiskey rating… price does not reflect quality and your rating should be based off the drink in front of you not what it’s value is…. I think it’s important to mention if something is a good deal or not but basing quality off price just doesn’t make sense anyway you put it.

      Value always should be looked at, there are always diminishing returns. Just because we like something doesn't always mean I'm willing to pay 100+ for it. Big difference between good for $40 and good for $150.

  • @joelregister9586

    Would anyone pay $250 for this bottle? That's the going rate in SC, which made me think it was a cash grab.

    • @BourbonJunkies
      @BourbonJunkies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a cash grab by the store and not the distillery though. Especially if MSRP is around 150.

    I guess my biggest issue is the price. I get it, but when they’ve put out 15 yr picks at 120 proof and at $49.99 it’s hard to justify an over $100 bump for a couple more years and a drop of 20 proof points. The 13-15 yr picks that I have are absolute hitters and the best KC that I’ve had, hands down.

      Completely hear what you are saying BUT we are in different times. Honestly someone in the comments said they found this at costco for $130 and change and this crushes every knob single barrel I've ever had. Basing the entire bottle solely on price per year is easy on paper but I've had some Knob picks that were 9 years old that beat a lot of 15's. This bottle in the mid 100's in the current state of the market is a really good bottle of whiskey.

    • @BourbonJunkies

      Yeah... I'm stupid and the flavor profiles match up on this with some of the parkers honestly so I think that's how I got there.
