I have always loved making gingerbread houses! I made elaborate ones and even made churches with "stained glass" windows. And all of my gingerbread houses had "glass" windows made of clear hard candy. To make those windows stand out, I would put a light inside. I haven't made one in a couple of years because 2 of our cats think those houses are their own personal treats! But they're so much fun to make! I also used to make one and donate it to the elementary school where I was working at the time. They used it as the Grand Prize in their Christmas Ornament contest. If you've never made one, please try it! So much fun!
Fantastic, I am sure the kids had so much fun. ALways sweet to see them. My cat loves to watch me when I am baking. I am not sure what she finds fascinating about it, but especially when I am doing cookie marathons I have to pull a chair up near the counter so she can supervise.
Love your house and your sweet little boy! Just a couple of ideas to maybe try: 1. Try rolling out your dough right on parchment, cut out pieces and remove excess. Then slide the whole thing onto your baking sheet. This will Prevent any inadvertent accidents as you try to move pieces from the counter with a spatula. 2. When putting house on your base, why not put the icing on the gingerbread then attach it to the base . 3. I like to decorate my pieces while they are laying flat so much easier for me anyway than trying to manipulate my piping bag and my hand in awkward positions. Just a few friendly suggestions. ;)
I just made your Easy Homemade Biscuits with my kids and they are so good!! Made breakfast sandwiches with them for the family. Delicious. Was so excited when I noticed more of your videos when searching for gingerbread recipes. Stoked to make this gingerbread house with the kids. We loved how organic this video was and seeing your boy pop in and help really motivated them too :)
I have been scouring the internet for a good gingerbread house recipe and yours is the first one that I like! I'm going to try it with my gluten-free flour blend, so fingers crossed 🤞
I have never made a gingerbread house before. I make gingerbread boys (most years), which I decorate but have never attempted the house. Thank you so much, Sam, for your clear and user-friendly templates, recipe, and demonstration. I hope that if I do make this, mine will turn out half as lovely as yours. Merry Christmas!
I love making gingerbread houses. I enter competitions and do them to raise money for different organizations. I do have to say using molasses creates a softer dough. I only use melted crisco with dark karo syrup along with usual flour and spices. This creates a very sturdy dough for larger structures. You get so creative when doing these projects and so so much fun with kids. Great video!!
Luke could not eat that sugar fast enough! Hilarious! Your boys are adorable. Kudos to you for having the children help in the kitchen, my mother-in-law shooed her boys out of the kitchen and consequently none of them can even boil water! LOL. Great job on the recipe and for creating lasting memories with your boys.
Wow, this is EXACTLY what I was looking for! (Last year, my granddaughter and I tried to made a gingerbread house from scratch but it collapsed and was a total failure!) I’m going to try it again, using this recipe. Thank you so much!
Oh Sam - this has to be my favorite SSR video yet!! I always laugh out loud at the mixer jokes - and twice in one video?!? And Luke’s shirt! LOVE IT! The boys are adorable and your recipes are the best! Our grandson wants to have a gingerbread house competition with us so I have to make a lot of gingerbread dough and royal icing! 😬 Wish me luck!!
I love the red shirt that you are wearing and I also love the beautiful gingerbread house as well have a blessed day and Happy Merry Christmas and New Years to you and your family and friends God-bless you all! ❤🎉
Also another tip.... dampen your counter top and spread your tin foil down and then roll and cut your dough on it. This way you transfer your foil sheet with your cut outs and they stay perfect
Great video, me and my daughter used to make them every year it was our Christmas Eve tradition. I can’t believe I never thought to glue it to the plate with icing it looks so much easier to build! We were holding our walls up with tins and all sorts of stuff while the walls stuck together 😂
What gorgeous boys you have, they’re so cute! They gave me a much needed laugh, thanks for another brilliant recipe, you really are very clever and a natural in front of the camera. Sending lots of love to you and your family at Christmas time 💕 Karen, UK
*The Molasses that I ordered online is not yet here, we need to do this Ginger bread house in our school today. Is it okay if we won’t put any molassas? Please answer.*
One more thing, why do you have two KitchenAid stand mixers? I could see why you might want two mixing bowls, but two mixers seems unusual. I will say this, you picked two really cool paint colors! 🥳
@@SugarSpunRun I assume that the two women walking around in the background of your $125.00 vanilla bean video are your sisters. They look like excellent helpers. You’re very fortunate that your family is so close.
Hi Shelly! The printable templates are in the description. You will just have to click into the description and you can either click over to the blog and print them there or it is easier if you just scroll down in the description and you will see the option for both templates, just pick the one you want and print that. I hope that helps!
I love gingerbread houses. But a bitter moment in 3rd grade made me never want to make one again. I made one in 3rd grade and it rocked the house, pun intended. I took 1st place. And when I got back from recess it was stolen. That hurt because I put so much pride in it. I stopped doing anything related for years. Until my daughter was born and when she got in school and I know every kid deserves to make one and I wanted to share those moments with her. I had to put my elementary grudge of over 2 decades aside.
seems that 4 cups is way too much flour. 500 grams comes out to about 3 and 1/4 cups in my case. made a huge difference in the dough consistency. also, the directions are quite different than how you make the dough in the video.
1 cup of flour is 125g so 4 cups is 500g. This is a standardized measurement across my website. What kind of differences are you noticing from the video to the written instructions? I make the videos based off of the written instruction (occasionally I will misspeak on an amount or something) but I don't make a video from something I don't have a recipe for.
What a fun memory maker. Thank you for sharing this. Blessings to you and your precious family. 🎄
This has to be my all-time favorite video of you and the kids. Luke is getting so smart and being such a good older brother.
Thank you so much! He is very good to his brother, MOST of the time. 🤣🤣😊
The kids are soooo cute and the house turned out fantastic!
Thank you! :)

Those sound so beautiful! Poor kitties just want a treat. 🤣
OMG the memories of building a gingerbread house with my boys when they were little. Merry Christmas.
Such great times! Merry Christmas! :)
Happy holidays to you the kids and all your loved ones.

:)
How beautiful, I loved the decoration, I really want to do it in my house. Thank you, a hug from Brazil. 😊 Beautiful family ❤.

🤣 Cats are funny! I'm surprised she doesn't just jump up and help herself to some cookies.
Well she has been known to do that. What she likes the best is if she can get a lick of butter- a girl after my own heart :).

Not the Stand Mixer part 😂
My favorite, poor kitchen aid 😢😂
Did y'all notice her son's t-shirt??? 😂🤣😂
@DonnaMSchmid Donna, I did not see that. I was so busy watching the cuteness and the steady eating of the fallen sugar 😄. Love that 👕. Thanks

What are the measurements by inches or centimeters for those that don't have a printer? Thinking about free handing it.
I think they did a wonderful job!!
Thank you! :)

Your boys are darling! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! :)
Do the royal icing melt with room temp?😮
Not at room temperature. 😊
Where did you find your pastry cutter?

Great recipie😍 what can I use instead of meringue powder ?
U can use egg whites just don’t add any water❤
One more thing, why do you have two KitchenAid stand mixers? I could see why you might want two mixing bowls, but two mixers seems unusual. I will say this, you picked two really cool paint colors! 🥳
I use them a LOT and my sisters help me in the kitchen so it’s handy to have more than one. And Thank you! ☺️

So much talking why don’t you just show how to make it
I do make shorts of a lot of my videos, but then I get complaints that I don't show the whole process. 🤷♀️
I tried this and my dough was like sand
