I truly have to say, I'm an auto technician. I went to tech school back in 2009, just got into a dealership position about 3 years ago (a large gap of time where technology has truly picked up). What you Paul have done and continue to do as far as these videos with the classes, troubleshooting in the field, etc has been absolutely amazing to watch and learn from. You go so much deeper into diagnosing things, far more than anyone else who I have "picked brains" from in the field. I seriously cannot thank you enough for the amount of effort you put in for those like myself who want to truly become better. I am a big fan, I have subscribed and I will at some point soon be purchasing a copy of your works. You sir are awesome! Thank you!
I absolutely agree with all your comments !!! As an experienced technician in New Zealand doing diagnostic work for over 10 years using scopes I always get a little something from your videos. Today was the coil turn on oscillations and what actually produced them work respect to the 2ndry ignition. GOLD! I recommend your channel to other mechanics all the time. Thanks for all the effort you put into fighting the good fight :)
I was a ASE master tech from 1975 - 1985. I quit and started a remodeling/repair business for 35 years. I have continued to perform all my own repairs. Now I'm thinking of semi retiring and going back to working on cars part time. I have fully enjoyed all of your videos that will prep me to take my skills to greater levels. Thanks you for your time and effort to educate us.
I've never heard of a mechanic getting money wealthy but I've met a man who made over a million from remodeling gone home flipping. He said home flips made him 60 grand in 3 months on his first try
I am about to be done with my automotive degree and after watching your videos, I can see how much my local community college leaves out of the curriculum. This video is absolute GOLD. Thank you, Paul.

But people have no clue what it takes to figure things out sometimes. I've watched alot of your vids and I am subbed. Thanks for posting and teaching this young generation
ScannerDanner no prob. I attended courses at The School of Automotive Machinists (Sam Racing) in Houston Texas. One of the best engine builders in the world. So I learned to build and machine and study race engine theory. But over the past 10 yrs I have gotten alot of general Auto stuff. Alot of times it way more difficult to diagnose and figure out what's going on. But anyway I have a snap on Solus that I use and that's how I found you a couple years ago. You teach a difficult occupation very well sir. I may pick up your premium before long.
This is the first time I am starting to understand this stuff. I have the uScope and am attempting to learn how to use it. Am signed up to ScannerDanner Premium. I will be watching this video over and over until I understand completely what I am being taught.
Amazingly informative presentation. Thank you so much! At 58 years old I still find this fascinating. I spent a couple thousand on a nice Pico rig about 20+ years ago and it's amazing how much you can learn just from diving in. I've been out of the professional auto repair business for 35 years but still do a lot of my own work. Unfortunately my rig was stolen years ago but watching this has kind of reignighted my curiosity. I may have to get another Pico to keep me out of trouble 😉. Danner, great job, thank you.

Nice job, Paul. I can remember learning this same thing 40 years ago but it sure shakes the cobwebs loose. The ignition coil looks different today but the theory of operation is still the same.

Excellent vids two thumbs up..kept having a po301 code pop up on my 2001 crown vic lx.. Done everything to it new coils plugs etc...done the water method and low and behold vacuum leak all down the passenger side...thanks alot dude, ive sprayed that sonofagun with carb spray and you name it...finally tryed the water and bam there it was.. I have a new intake already to install, ill post on here if it cures it for good...thanks and happy holidays...
Very helpful video, also impressed with the little scope, ordered one thismorning based on seeing this. Been telling my colleagues about scanner danner I love these videos. I get Audi training which I need to fly and costs a lot but this is better
I can't make up my mind between buying the DSO, Hantek or the Micsig TO1104 Oscilloscope. The Micsig looks awesome. Can't afford the Pico. Great video.
LOL, your face Paul @ 0:18 when they start clapping. *Light claps* (evil death stare) *claps quickly fade away* Hahaha i know it wasnt intentional just looked hilarious. "Dont you dare clap for Mr Tire while im speaking" 😭
Excellent training as always. Wanted to wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and a safe and prosperous 2018 . Thank you for all you have taught us techs online with such detailed teaching. God bless you my brother.
I cannot thank you enough for these great videos you put out. If every trade school in the country had someone like you wow! Also do you have photographic memory?
I'm glad you love my comment. I have a 2009 kia sorento diesel. I have to spray quick start In the morning to start and throughout the day it starts perfectly if you can give me an Idea of what to check I will really appreciate it. I live in Trinidad and Tobago.
ScannerDanner The other day I read some comments on a John MacArthur video where he gave a eulogy for RC Sproul and a commenter called MacArthur self serving and egotistical . People are jealous when you know your talent in life and if they are not willing to apply themselves to be better it is their loss. We watch your videos to better ourselves and thank God for your talent .
I used to think the same thing about MacArthur when I first started listening to him. Now He is my favorite teacher/preacher of the Word. Funny that you mentioned him. Thanks for the comment brother.
ScannerDanner several years back when I started watching your videos we got on the topic of faith in Christ and we got to talking about liking MacArthur . Your videos are a type of ministry in that you not only bless techs with education , you also help many people with fixing their transportation to keep their jobs, get their children to school and the doctor and have a way to church to worship . You have a gift in teaching a difficult topic in a clear yet detailed way . No words can say thank you enough my brother in Christ . A million thumbs up to you .
Awesome information, awesome explanation, and awesome instructor Thank you so much for sharing this valuable video. Please keep up the good work. God bless you.
This is a good video because a possible trans code is there and I've been wondering, how far do you take it with transmission codes? Do you send it to the trans shop or do you see if it's engine related. Maybe a video on how you proceed and the distance you go.
Excellent vid. Wee question. On the secondary circuit you said there was a fault on snap acceleration because the first vertical line didn't rise, but then straight away when you tested another hv lead and the vertical line went out of the screen you said it was because of a misfire.
Absolutely fantastic! Wee Q. If individual coils are difficult to get at and (by the sounds of it) only 1 wire powers all coils, how do you condemn a specific coil? Thanks. N/W Scotland.

You say in class: “no primary coil osculation, means you have secondary coil problems”. It should be you have a “secondary problem” could be the coil, plug or cable (or combinations). Thx for this excellent vid!
great channel been a follower for a long time recently stumble into a job that's got puzzle 03 Nissan Murano v6 replace the engine with the same from another 03 Nissan Murano when finish when to start n had code P0345 replace camshaft sensor nothing check connector red wire read 12.20 black wire was also good reading middle wire signal while in idle in ohms read 5.15 open valve cover from old engine n new n they look the same however when i turn it on it barely has any power at all can u help or point me in the right direction
@scannerdanner I have a capacitive pickup that is very similar to the one you use. I use it with my verus and a small handheld similar to this one. It will not show nearly as much detail with the spark event as the ones I have seen you use. Connections are correct. Do you think it is just because it may be a cheap knockoff? Thanks, justin
Mr Danner, good afternoon. how to diagnose misfire caused by spark plug gap? how to determine the correct spark plug gap when there is no possibility to change coil charging time, or any other parameter of the ignition system? Thanks in advance.
Just bought your first scope ? Just thinking about buying one ? Already have one but not making use of it ? This video is a gresat starting point for using a simple oscilloscope for secondary ignition misfire, More at www.scannerdanner.com
Heck yeah I'll take an Oz Mechanics shirt! Email me at paul@scannerdanner.com or if you already have my personal email and I'll give you my address. Thanks buddy and Merry Christmas
It's strange watching these waveforms being looked at again. These ignition patterns were normal to use and read for diagnosis. It's almost like new tech again
Hi good video 🔥So fire line is compression, flat line is spark .If I have compression or spark in my car .Am I able to see that in a regular scanner tool?
hello friend I congratulate you for your support in the video and I write to you from caracas, venezuela I have a dokota V-8 2912 automatic I have a fault my trasmission "does not back off, but if it starts well
I do and it will be different for the tests you are doing. Thank you! Remember, I offer a full refund on the eBook is you are not completely satisfied. You have nothing to lose.
Dan is it possible to detect misfires on control O2 sensors values alone? For example, we have a wideband probe precat and narrowband postcat for control. If the control probe is periodically hitting really low numbers (like 0.1V), can this be an indication of a misfire, too? Let's say the manifold and the exhaust is absolutely leakproof...
Scan data O2 values can be used as a guide, but alone? No. You can scope an O2 signal and then sync off of an ignition firing event and use that to find the offending cylinder, but this test is very difficult to do and interpret
@@ScannerDanner thanks! It is actually a case, where ECU is not the best at reporting and detecting intermittent misfires becausenit constantly wanta to equalize cylinders inside the bank (it is a Bosch unit that reports a cylinder rough running parameter), it constantly reports faulty pte cats and post cats, cat efficiency... All that has been replaced twice, checked for air leaks and exhaust leaks... It always reports control probes ageing even when new. And I can see them drop really low, then normalize without the precats even reacting to that drop.
hello there.....I have a buick lesabre 1995 that has the same engine 3800 in my car and I am dealing with 2 misfire.....The number 4 cylinder ignition coil isn't firing at all and cylinder number 2 will sort of spark but not like consist like the rest of the ignition coils......First I tried swapping coils around but the problem didn't move at.....the coil that I thought it was bad (after switching them around) was good so my next step is the ignition coil module system.....After putting a new ignition coil control module in it I am still stuck with the same misfire.....I even put new spark plugs wires in it (since I change the spark plugs last year and forgot to get new plug wires) nothing change at all.....I even bought new ignition coil pack all three of them and the problem is still the same........I wanna know whats my next step to pin point the causes of 2 misfire that I'm trying to fix......thanks..... love your videos keep up the good work brother.
I have a wrangler 2012 3.6 v6 with diagnostic codes P0201 P0202 P0203 P0204 P0205 P0206 all six injectors circuit open active. I only replaced the oil cooler and it was running perfect before the job. Now it is miss fire counter injector 1 and 2. I scoped the ecu pin 8 and 9 C2 connector and 8 was clean but 2 was messy. Any ideas as to where to look. I have repaired some open wiring from previous guy working on it. Thanks
1:53 I can't figure out why some of the DIS ignition systems' waveform(s) look that way . Low firing lines falling that way I would truly appreciate an answer, ive been searching but havent found anything
I'm late to the party! But, that's not because of a lack of quality teaching on your end - it's a lack of hours in a day on my end. :) Great stuff, as always! If you guys think this video was great, you should see what he's got in the Premium section on ScannerDanner.com !
For an intermittent misfire what test(s) could be done with the scope? No one in my dealership can use the new mopar special tool : pico scope. I want to get proficient at scope usage
time :34.29 its actually back emf that your seeing as on oscillation rather than reserve energy its actually wasted energy as it is not big enough to produce another spark
Paul, How MUCH of a straight up line constitutes a bad ramp waveform. Just missing occilations or to what hieght of a straight up line is considered "bad", or ANY form of a straight up line?
lot's of variables on coil ramps. Some systems you cannot even see the turn on oscillations. In general, no straight up lines on anything that is creating a magnetic field. But you also need to consider the waveform characteristics on the other coils. The ones that are working properly

Nice! Thanks Billy R!
Why post this when he already corrected himself???
Excellent. Excellent. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Paul. Bless you brother.
Great lesson Paul. Thanks!
mr can you tell what kind equipment you are using tank for sharing with us
Check the description, it is all there my friend. Thank you!
Pretty good scope info in this one.
great channel been a follower for a long time
recently stumble into a job that's got puzzle
03 Nissan Murano
v6
replace the engine with the same from another 03 Nissan Murano
when finish when to start n had code P0345
replace camshaft sensor nothing
check connector
red wire read 12.20
black wire was also good reading
middle wire signal while in idle in ohms read 5.15
open valve cover from old engine n new n they look the same
however when i turn it on it barely has any power at all
can u help or point me in the right direction
You're an awesome instructor thank you I just now subscribe
@scannerdanner I have a capacitive pickup that is very similar to the one you use. I use it with my verus and a small handheld similar to this one. It will not show nearly as much detail with the spark event as the ones I have seen you use. Connections are correct. Do you think it is just because it may be a cheap knockoff? Thanks, justin
Excelente clase master .mucho saludos desde chile
Mr Danner, good afternoon.
how to diagnose misfire caused by spark plug gap? how to determine the correct spark plug gap when there is no possibility to change coil charging time, or any other parameter of the ignition system? Thanks in advance.
Greetings to you from the inflamed Middle East✊
Greetings my friend. I am praying that one day you will see peace. Thank you for watching. God bless you brother
Just bought your first scope ?
Just thinking about buying one ?
Already have one but not making use of it ?
This video is a gresat starting point for using a simple oscilloscope for secondary ignition misfire,

hey Paul . just seeing if you want an Oz Mechanics shirt. gave them out to a couple of youtube tech just seeing if you would like one.
Heck yeah I'll take an Oz Mechanics shirt! Email me at paul@scannerdanner.com or if you already have my personal email and I'll give you my address. Thanks buddy and Merry Christmas
ScannerDanner just sent the email
Hi Mr Dinner, I hope you are in health? I wish you happy Christmas and new year.
Thank you brother!
Thank you so much I learned and enjoy this video!
Thanks Paul for share this video is very informative =)
Regards from Spain.
Thank you Pablo!
Firing line is not just compression but is affected by it. And no, you need a scope to see this stuff. Thanks for watching!
hello friend I congratulate you for your support in the video and I write to you from caracas, venezuela I have a dokota V-8 2912 automatic I have a fault my trasmission "does not back off, but if it starts well
Paul, In your book do you describe where to attach the leads for lab scope when performing tests ?
I do and it will be different for the tests you are doing. Thank you! Remember, I offer a full refund on the eBook is you are not completely satisfied. You have nothing to lose.
Thanks happy Thanksgiving
Thanks
@ 13:28 was Ramon late for class. I ask because I have same name lol

I can't figure out why some of the DIS ignition systems' waveform(s) look that way . Low firing lines falling that way
I would truly appreciate an answer, ive been searching but havent found anything
have you used the GTC505? would be easier and faster to check ignition systems. sec, prim and current ramping
I'm late to the party! But, that's not because of a lack of quality teaching on your end - it's a lack of hours in a day on my end. :)
Great stuff, as always! If you guys think this video was great, you should see what he's got in the Premium section on ScannerDanner.com !
Thanks Smitty!
For an intermittent misfire what test(s) could be done with the scope? No one in my dealership can use the new mopar special tool : pico scope. I want to get proficient at scope usage
Thanks vidio
time :34.29 its actually back emf that your seeing as on oscillation rather than reserve energy its actually wasted energy as it is not big enough to produce another spark
Hi Paul, what type of screen are you using that will allow you to control your presentation like that?
Paul, How MUCH of a straight up line constitutes a bad ramp waveform. Just missing occilations or to what hieght of a straight up line is considered "bad", or ANY form of a straight up line?
lot's of variables on coil ramps. Some systems you cannot even see the turn on oscillations. In general, no straight up lines on anything that is creating a magnetic field. But you also need to consider the waveform characteristics on the other coils. The ones that are working properly
ScannerDanner Thank you very much sir......
Thanks paul Danner
Thank you Jesus Malagon! You have been following me for a long time and I am very grateful.
The plug wire clamp @ 8:20, does that come with the U Scope?
